March does not bring Spring easily and without a fight to the state of Maine. It calls forth my wanderlust, as talks pop up and investigative traveling for me to the South is on the horizon. Trips call me away from the 100-plus-inches worth of snow in Portland, and out of the cobwebs of February. In two newspapers in the state today, separate articles have been published of my forthcoming talks and treks. The Maine Sunday Telegram contains a good interview in conjunction with my Wednesday noontime, March 5th appearance at the Portland Public Library. It also gives a hint [...]
Courage Meets Bigfoot
Courage the Cowardly Dog is an award-winning American animated television series (1999-2002), created by John R. Dilworth, who directed each episode, about a dog named Courage and his owners Muriel Bagge, a kindly old Scottish woman, and Eustace Bagge, a grumpy old farmer, living together in a farmhouse in the middle of the fictional town of Nowhere, Kansas. The specific specimen of studied species of Sasquatch seen in this selection surely should be spoken of only in some sort of spurious speculation.
Johor Bigfoot Cartoons
Due to the difficulties uploading images in the last few days, here finally are two cartoons about the latest hairy matters in Malaysia: These comic images are regarding the recent news item printed about the current situation in Johor. Much appreciation to Peter Loh for creating this exclusive cartoon for Cryptomundo.
Sadie Hawkins Day Bigfoot
Today is one of the rare events in human time-space history, a catch-up day, February 29th. Happy Sadie Hawkins Day! According to English law, February 29th was ignored and had no legal status. Therefore, it was the one day when women could ask someone to marry them. This practice was first documented in 1288, when Scotland passed a law that allowed women to propose marriage to the man of their choice in that year. They also made it law that any man who declined a proposal in a leap year must pay a fine, such as a kiss to money [...]
Monster Hunters
Before “Monster Quest,” “Legend Hunters,” “Ghost Hunters,” “Mystery Hunters,” and “Destination Truth,” there was Peter von Puttkamer’s “Monster Hunters” on television. It was a series that was one of the first cryptozoology “hunt” or “search” shows featuring groups of actual cryptozoologists or monster hunters filmed in the field. Now, after years of anticipation, “Monster Hunters” has been released on DVD. For those unfamiliar with the series, you may be more aware of Peter von Puttkamer’s earlier, award-winning, feature length motion picture, Sasquatch Odyssey: The Hunt for Bigfoot. The film is famous for its profiles of the “Four Horsemen of the [...]
A Passion For Field Guides: Updated
Look, to be honest, I love field guides. I don’t merely have a shelf of field guides. I literally have a bookcase full of them, over a hundred different titles. With more in storage. I have such a passion for them, I wrote a couple and am planning on more. But what do we do with all of them? I recently saw this amusing photo on a bird books digest forum, with that birdwatcher out in the field with an armful of field guides. It is a paradox, indeed. You want to take field guides with you into the bush, [...]
Bigfooter Sam Sherry Dies
Sam Sherry of Wilpen, Pennsylvania, holds plaster casts of Bigfoot tracks that he found in his area. Correspondents Eric Altman and Paul Johnson have sent along word today that Pennsylvania Bigfoot researcher Sam Sherry, 86, has passed away. Sherry died at the Veteran’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, yesterday, February 22, 2008, at 1 p.m. The viewing and funeral will be at Snyder’s funeral home in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. Altman writes: “For those who knew Sam or had the pleasure of meeting Sam, he was one of a kind and a real character….Even into his 80′s, without sight or hearing, Sam still travelled [...]
Skeptical Bigfootry in the Classroom
My enjoyable visit and interactive lecture to the class at the University of Maine at Orono requires a photographic and informative followup. I visited the campus on February 20, 2008, and previewed that upcoming lecture here. No Sasquatch were sighted but approximately 50 students, three instructors, and I had a good time exchanging ideas and thoughts. A majority of the students were open-minded to Bigfoot, with a good sampling of anthropology and zoology students dotting the audience, even a few baseball players too (I’m very pro-baseball), and certainly some intelligent skeptics, as well. Indeed, a wonderful instructive time was had [...]
Bigfoot on Weird Travels Tonight
“Weird Travels: Bigfoot” (a repeat, of course) airs on Friday, February 22 at 9 PM and 1 AM on the morning of February 23, Eastern Time, on the Travel Channel. Check your local listings for the airtime in your area. This is the episode that both Craig Woolheater and Loren Coleman were involved in for this series. The film crew was in the field with members of Craig’s research group during his field operation, as well as spending time with Craig in Jefferson, Texas, and at Caddo Lake. The shooting also included a day trip to Fouke, Arkansas to check [...]
Bigfoot in the Classroom
Today, Wednesday, February 20th, I journey north to give a 1:10 pm to 2:00 pm lecture in a classroom at the DP Corbett building at the University of Maine at Orono. This event serves as a contemporary example of how cryptozoology and Bigfoot studies are being used in colleges, universities, and, yes, in secondary and elementary settings. Do you think this college class is being given in the anthropology or zoology department? Actually, neither. The course involving the subject of 50 years of my passionate research interest is English 101, an introductory composition course required of all first year UMaine [...]
