CZ 2006 Lists Begin Roundup
Cryptozoology, in various overt and covert ways, is all over the news this last week in November 2006, as people appear to be getting a headstart on their end of the year lists. Here’s a snappy overview of the first wave. First, a calm and quiet honor you may have missed. Stanley Newman is the editor of the Newsday Crossword and author/editor of nearly 100 books on crosswords, word games and trivia. On November 29, 2006, Newman picked his: Word of the week: “cryptozoology.” It is the study of creatures whose existence is as yet unproved. Cryptozoological subjects include the [...]

Here’s some book ideas that are being put out there for kids who are visiting the activities and the current Missouri home of the traveling exhibition that left Bates College only a few weeks ago. Loren Coleman’s Top Cryptids
Halloween 2006 seems as good a time as any to publish a response to several requests I have received lately for my top ten picks in cryptids, those animals that serve as the focus of cryptozoologists. Of course, thinking outside the lines, as I always do, I had to choose thirteen. Also, I had to create two parallel lists. One is for those supported by what I see as the most credible evidence, in my opinion only. For the other group, I see this one as viewed through the public’s eye, those most popular cryptids, monsters, crypto-creatures, or whatever the [...]
Arcturus Cryptozoology Books
Looking for a rare Keel title? A paperback from the 1970s demonstrating that era’s view of Bigfoot? An oldie but a goodie? Trying to pick up a scarce cryptozoology book? Bob Girard has been selling used books for years, and now does it from Port St. Lucie, Florida. If you want to keep the good books in this world, you have to support those booksellers that aren’t afraid to sell them. Therefore, we have to support, for example, Arcturus Books. Here’s a sample below of items you can email him about, and see if he still has it in stock. [...]
More Sea Serpents
The other day I mentioned the modern void of Cassie reports here. I also recommended people revisit “All Things Maine” blogger Christopher Dunham good overview of “The Sea Serpents of Mount Desert Island.” Today, Chris posted this: More Sea Serpents of Maine Loren Coleman was kind enough to mention again my post from a year ago on the Sea Serpents of Mount Desert Island. This inspired me to dig up some serpent testimonials of later date, from locations ranging from Biddeford to Vinalhaven and Rockland. Chris then shares the text of Sea Serpent articles from: Daily Kennebec Journal, May 26, [...]
Where is Cassie?
I look forward to seeing folks at the closing reception at Bates’s exhibition “Cryptozoology: Out of Time Place Scale,” on October 7th. In the meantime, I will be pondering why it has been so many years since anyone has seen Cassie, the Casco Bay Sea Serpent. Cassie, the local name I coined long ago in a magazine to characterize these cryptids seen near Portland, Maine, was bestowed in the same tradition that many freshwater and marine creature monikers are given – with passion, humor, and a nod to Nessie. As it turns out, of course, Portland is not alone in [...]
