Only 30 exist in Maine and they won’t become visible for sightings until October 7, 2006. Overall, only 200 are known to be around, and some of those already have vanished into private hands. They are almost extinct, although just discovered, and the entire group will disappear soon, mostly into private collections. What in the world could I be talking about? Would you believe one of the rarest of rare books to be published on cryptozoology, the volume that contains the exhibition catalogue and essays from the Bates College program? If you are interested in having me pick up a [...]
Sabine River Monster Photo
Coast to Coast AM’s website has posted the following image of an unknown creature swimming on its back, as seen in the Sabine River, near where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The Sabine River forms the border between Texas and Louisiana near the reported point of this picture/sighting. Most of the area around this location would be bayou country, but nevertheless freshwater. The Sabine River is known for its large freshwater catfish, but this animal does not appear to be even remotely similar to a catfish. Bring On Kraken!
Modern images of the Kraken come via Jules Verne’s book and from remembrances of the 1954 sci-fi movie named after his book, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. That’s about ready to change, in a small way, after the September 23nd broadcast of Kraken on the Sci-Fi Channel. Early reviews are what might be expected, as people sometimes make more fun of the name than the subject. Take for example, Kevin McDonough of United Features Syndicate in his contribution, with the oddly headlined "’Kracken’: Well, the title’s good" : You have to love a movie called "Kraken: Tentacles of the Deep" [...]
Battle With Sea Serpent
Fishermen Have Battle With Sea Serpent Long Beach, California — Five men who went fishing yesterday* on the launch Rita assert they had an encounter with a sea serpent at the Grouper banks, eighteen miles off shore. Guy Griffith and James Harvey were of the party. "The monster was about forty feet long," said Griffith, "and about fifteen feet back from the head it had a big dorsal fin. The head was as big as a barrel and brown with eyes as big as my fist and it moved from side to side. The tail was like that of a [...]
Teachers and Friends: Plan Your CZ Tours & Lectures
Alexis Rockman’s art is at Bates College. Have you seen Cryptozoology: Out of Time Place Scale yet? You better hurry. From Thylacines to Yowies, from Sasquatch to Sea Serpents, from Mothman to Malaysian Mawas, there’s a museum near you that is waiting for your visit. If you are a teacher, now is the time to schedule your classroom’s visit. Professors and teachers who add cryptozoology to their lesson plans find out quickly that more students become interested in what there is to learn in natural history, zoology, biology, and other life sciences. In North America, the school year has begun [...]
August 10th: Lake Champlain Sea Serpent Seen
This is the Champ painting that began showing up on the sides of U-Haul vans in 1999. August 10th… Vermont Get Into Line Its Sea Serpent Story, Though a Little Late, Is All Right. The Lake Champlain sea serpent has been seen. And by an entirely credible and trustworthy witness, whose name, were we permitted to give it, would carry conviction to the most incredulous of doubting Thomases. The monster was seen, slowly swimming southward, about midway of the channel between the Vermont shore and Split Rock. The lake at this place is only about a mile wide. Here, too, [...]
“Sea Serpent” Beached
Cryptomundo pal David Pescovitz over at Boing Boing, on July 27, 2006, posts news of the latest beaching of a relative of the ribbonfish and oarfish. These types of fish may infrequently have been mistaken for Sea Serpents. David writes: Huge fish washed up in Oregon This huge King-of-the-Salmon fish, nearly six feet long, washed up on the shore near Seaside, Oregon last weekend. These rarely-spotted fish, Trachipterus altivelis, usually are found at depths of 1600 feet. Pescovitz shares more in his blog on this. Despite such a comparative remark on my part, the appearance of these animals on shore [...]
Bates Opens Cryptozoology Exhibition
The International Cryptozoology Museum (ICM) is sharing its contents through the end of 2006. Over 100 of some of the most significant large and small items from the ICM’s collection are included in my specific room at the new Bates College exhibition, “Cryptozoology: Out of Time Place Scale.” Then, in October, the objects from that gathering and the other artists’ collections move to Kansas City. The entire traveling exhibition will be there through January 2007. Some of the items from the International Cryptozoology Museum’s collection, contained in my installation at Bates, probably will include: – 8 ft-tall, 500 pound “Crookston [...]
In Search of African Dragons
Jon Downes has announced that his Center for Fortean Zoology will attempt to track down recent accounts of “dragons” or monitor lizards in West Africa. In early July 2006, a six-person team from the North Devon-based UK group is travelling to Gambia to investigate these folktales. They may find the trail a little cold. Back on June 12, 1983, 15-year-old amateur naturalist Owen Burnham discovered the fresh carcass of a strange beast on the remote Bungalow Beach in Gambia. The stranded dead cryptid was around 15 feet long and looked like a cross between a crocodile and a dolphin. Owen [...]
Penn & Teller Swear By Cryptozoology
What can you say about Penn & Teller? They left no sacred cryptids untouched by their silence and their profanity. Bottomline, you did not miss much “science” (despite their claims) if your cable system doesn’t get Showtime and you did not watch Penn & Teller’s April 24th show on “Cryptozoology.” Let’s see, Penn & Teller made fun of Scott Norman, head of CryptoSafari. And they satirized the search for the Loch Ness Monsters via Richard Freeman and Jon Downes of the Centre for Fortean Zoology (“the world’s best mystery animal research group”). Scott’s hat, his photos of his days in [...]
