Anniversaries are those logical points on the calendar when we all naturally think about events that may have been too overwhelming to have sink too deeply into our psyche at the time. Three years ago the Mothman Death Curse, if there is such a thing, hit close to home. On July 19, 2004, the first copies of the August 2004 issue of Fortean Times went on sale in London, with distribution to the USA, later in July. It contained the first publication of “The Mothman Death Curse” article that I had completed a few weeks earlier, after researching the subject [...]

The Day of the Triffids’ Kieron Moore Dies
In 1969, on July 20th, a man walked on the moon. Five days ago, one of the first men to walk with a Triffid died. Irish actor Kieron Moore, 82, died Sunday, July 15, 2007. He is one of the lead characters, Tom Goodwin in the motion picture, The Day of the Triffids. Playing an alcoholic biologist, Goodwin finds his core and ends up fighting the Triffids with vigor, while his character’s wife (played by Janette Scott) is credited with screaming a lot. The humans are stereotyped; the Triffids are not. For more on the acting career of Kieron Moore, [...]

How Big is the Cryptozoology Community?
My late friend, colleague, and mentor, Ivan T. Sanderson, shown above with a lemur in his private zoo, was one of the first in America to try to organize those interested in cryptozoology into a formal “society.” What does his legacy look like today? Matt Bille asked me a simple question: “How big is the cryptozoological community?” Specifically, Matt wanted to know if anyone has tried to estimate the size of the cryptozoological community – that is, the number of people in North America particularly, who actively follow cryptozoological news and publications? How many people, Matt wondered, actually spend time [...]
Kangahippomouse?
No, it’s not a new member of the Flight of the Conchords group, which already include performers with the pseudonyms of the Hiphopopotamus and the Rhymenoceros. No, the Kangahippomouse is the thing above. Mark Frauenfelder has blogged an entry entitled “Mystery creature photographed in Seattle — a kangahippomouse?” over at Boing Boing. A reader at BB recently sent in a photograph (above) of this whatever: “Just outside of Seattle, WA my roommate Ed recently took a photo of this . . . thing.” Mark is looking for help in identifying it. My first thoughts ran to that of the naked [...]
Pygmies Belittled: “Exhibited” At Zoo
History has repeated itself. Hominids have diminished others hominids, once again. Ota Benga and a chimpanzee, Bronx Zoo, 1906. “A hundred years ago, on September 8th, 1906, the Bronx Zoo in New York unveiled a new exhibit that would attract thousands of visitors to come and marvel. Inside a cage, in the monkey house, was a man. His name was Ota Benga. He was 22 years old, a member of the Batwa people, pygmies who lived in what was then, the Belgian Congo,” noted National Public Radio (NPR) last year. Protests occurred, and the Bronx Zoo closed the exhibit. A [...]
A CryptoZoo Birthday
Even a hard-working cryptozoologist needs to take a break for his birthday party, once a decade, right? Aren’t we all kids inside, sometimes? Snapshots from the July 12th celebration at the Portland Sea Dogs game: During the event, an unknown cryptid mascot showed up to pose with the specially made Bigfoot birthday cake and some guy in a red shirt. Actually, this creature is the Yarmouth Clam Festival mascot clam. Strange but very cheerful. In the two above photos, you can see how different camera angles and light bouncing off Bigfoot created the illusion that the brown primate may sometimes [...]

Mapinguary Madness
On July 9th, from NBC’s Today Show to worldwide news service rewrites of the Sunday New York Times article, this all is keeping this new Mapinguary mania alive. And we all thought the interest in this creature was dead a decade ago. Sadly, the articles being spread from the UPI are often headlined with this one, “Numerous Tribes See Brazillian ‘Bigfoot’,” but then open with comments on the locals “have spoken throughout the years of seeing a giant, fearsome, slothlike creature that roams the rainforest.” The articles are going with the Bigfoot/primate headlines, but talking only about the giant ground [...]
