The Lewiston Sun Journal came for a visit to my museum. Here’s the way reporter Kathryn Skelton experienced it. And me. Weird, Wicked Weird A man and his (weird) museum Hair from Sir Edmund Hillary’s Yeti expedition, water from Loch Ness, a 9-foot latex pterodactyl, Loren Coleman’s got it all. Sometime next spring, Loren Coleman’s getting a 12-foot-long replica of Canada’s Ogopogo lake monster. It’ll probably have to stay on the porch, near his 8.5-foot-tall, oxen-haired Bigfoot. Coleman is a little pressed for space indoors. There’s already a 9-foot latex pterodactyl camouflaged by an avocado tree and a cabinet of [...]
Peter Matthiessen on Wildpeople
Peter Matthiessen, who is perhaps best known for his books The Snow Leopard (1978) and In the Spirit of Crazy Horse (1983), will be speaking in Idaho on October 19, on the topic “A Naturalist’s Impressions of the Wildman.” He will be sharing his insights about Yeti and Sasquatch, in a lecture arranged by anthropologist Jeff Meldrum. Those who have closely read In the Spirit of Crazy Horse recall that Matthiessen talked of the Dakota/Lakota traditions and encounters with their “Big Men,” the local moniker for the Sasquatch. Peter Matthiessen (b. May 22, 1927, New York City) is an American [...]
In Pursuit of Cryptozoology
You have many choices of events to attend during the last quarter of 2007. Here are some visual reminders of the upcoming end of the year Cryptozoology conferences: Saturday, December 1, 2007, “Introduction to Cryptozoology,” Mythic Creatures, American Museum of Natural History, New York City, New York. The AMNH model of Gigantopithecus is part of the “Mythic Creatures” exhibition. These conferences and other recent gatherings have produced some rather elaborate and intriguing forms of promotional art, demonstrating a new love of monsters, creatures, and cryptids on posters. Perhaps we are entering a new era of creative imagery in cryptozoological art [...]
Loren Coleman Update
It did seem like time to brush the rust off that little corner of Cryptomundo. FYI. My biographical information at Cryptomundo has been updated, here. The bio details had not been changed since I joined Cryptomundo a few years ago. I’m beginning to feel a gallery of all the comic book images that artists have created should be gathered in one collection and linked to that bio site. But I have to go on to the cryptozoo news today, and I just don’t have time for everything. Here I am engaged in cryptoconchology, the study of the shelled hidden or [...]
The Bestiary
I am updating this item. Wisconsin Public Radio, who produced this program, nationally broadcast their “The Bestiary” program over the September 2nd weekend, and now have a very attractive webpage about it here. Public Radio International (PRI) broadcast the interviews they conducted earlier this summer with various people interested in fantastic beasts and cryptozoology in the program entitled “The Bestiary.” It is a creative, entertaining production done in the PRI tradition of mixing sounds, music, voices, and other audio treats to keep the listener interested as they explore the subject. I especially liked the choice of the bumper music: “Abominable [...]
Monster Weekend Report
Newcastle, UK: The home of the infamous Lambton Worm, known for its Curse and the Lambton Worm song. Journalist Tim Chapman shares his straight-from-the-scene report on the September 1-2, 2007, “Monster Weekend” in Newcastle, United Kingdom. With no official Fortean Times UnConvention this year (and, as I understand it, little prospect of one in the foreseeable future), FT stalwart Ian Simmons assumed the task of organising a partial substitute. Conveniently, Ian holds a senior job at the ‘Centre for Life’ science museum in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, which just happened to be hosting a ‘Myths & Monsters’ exhibition on loan from London’s Natural [...]
EuroCryptozoo Conference
We shall be conducting our 7th European symposium at Engreux (in Ardennes, south of Belgium) between Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th November 2007. The theme is “Unknown Animals, New Discoveries and Biodiversity.” Pr. Franco Tassi (Center of Appennins Studies, ex-director of Abruzzo National Park – Italy), Dr. Enrico Migliaccio (BRAMEA – Museo di Scienze Naturali ed Ambientali di Mentana – Italy), Lorenzo Rossi (Groupo Criptozoologia – Italy), Yvette Deloison (CNRS – Paris (France), Marcus Matthews (Alien Big Cats searcher – England) will be presenting.Eric Joye ABEPAR Any readers of Cryptomundo attending? Anyone interested in being Cryptomundo’s correspondent there? The motif [...]
Newcastle’s Monster Weekend
I’m traveling again, tomorrow, flying over to England, apparently via Paris. (I know, I know, my arms will be very tired from all the flapping.) Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2, 2007, “Searching for Bigfoot and Other Cryptids.” It all will be taking place at Monster Weekend, Centre for Life (science center), Newcastle, United Kingdom. For more information, see “Monster Weekend” or look over the schedule below: Monster Weekend Speaking Schedule Saturday, September 1, 2007 Dragons: More than a Myth? (Richard Freeman) 10.00-10.45 Before daemons, vampires, werewolves or giants the dragon haunted the minds of men and coiled their [...]
Civil War Pterodactyl to Maine
I’ve returned from Patrick Huyghe’s cabana, completing this weekend, the extended adventure in transporting the “Civil War Mystery Pterodactyl” to New England. The following images are courtesy of Allie Huyghe. The photo above is courtesy of Gregg Hale, Executive Director, Haxan Productions, Fox TV (at the time). My deep thanks to the Huyghes for their great hospitiality, cryptozoological conversations and Fortean brainstorming. By the way, if you were the passenger in a car with New York plates driving on I-84, who rolled your window down to ask me “What is that?” – and then had a short dialogue with me [...]
