The Good For several months, there have been no new Mothman news, as it relates to the Mothman Death List. That’s great. Not since 26 January 2007, when a member of the cast of the Mark Pellington-Richard Gere movie, The Mothman Prophecies, died five years after the national release of the film, has there been a well-documented, well-publicized passing of anyone on the cast. (For more details on that 2007 death, click on “Cyrus Bills”.) The void in deaths has been welcome. Or is the absence of information perhaps only a lack of knowledge of such deaths, as the movie [...]
Wiki Weirdness & WV’s Winged Wonder
Okay, the news organizations’ election primary attention shifts to West Virginia today, Tuesday, May 13th, so let’s talk Mothman. Actually, I’m going to use this opportunity to note the sinister editing that regularly takes place at the Wikipedia entry for “Mothman.” I’ve been watching the site because some incredible “political” inputs have occurred with the “Mothman” entry, apparently by skeptics and debunkers inserting words like “claims” and deleting large sections of information. I did not write any of the section, but have dipped in to correct citations, edit slanted words out, and to try to remove mistakes. But what I [...]

What Do You Think of John Keel?
John A. Keel was a significant author of works in Forteana, cryptozoology, and ufology in the 1960s and 1970s. His Strange Creatures from Time and Space and The Mothman Prophecies, as well as his numerous articles in magazines, influenced other writers, researchers, and the general public. After the Mothman book-inspired movie appeared in 2002, interest in Keel resurfaced, briefly. His declining health, few public lectures, and then heart attack, created less attention to Keel than might have been expected. I was wondering how Cryptomundians consider his impact, legacy, and import today? What place do you think Keel with have in [...]

Galveston Mothman?
In her blog this week, Ha’ri writes in “Mothman – Sighting in Galveston?” of her wonderings and ponderings. She is interested to discover if any large bird-like somethings were seen before any hurricanes hit the coastal Texas city of Galveston. Ha’ri does some research, and rightfully comes to the conclusion there’s nothing to be easily found about a 1969 hurricane – or Mothman sightings there. In the movie The Mothman Prophecies, news articles about the “Houston Batman” were flashed on the screen as the character “Alexander Leek” (“Keel” backwards) talked of how Mothmen were seen before disasters like “the hurricane” [...]
Mothman Cryptotourism
Doesn’t the above look like a Mothman clone? Read more about it over a Posthuman Blues. Meanwhile, the Mainichi Japan shares the latest on the booming cryptotourism in the hometown of Mothman. A quick stroll up Main Street, Point Pleasant, West Virginia, is enough to learn who this river town’s most famous resident is: His name is on signs, in shop windows and restaurants, and there’s even a museum devoted to him. And the sculpture in the middle of town prominently depicts his enormous wings and glowing red eyes. More than 40 years after the first reported sighting of the [...]
The Mothman Waffle Fry
Correspondent Scott Foy sends along the above photograph for sharing at Cryptomundo, and the following detailed enjoyable document about his found mysterious object: I don’t know if you guys could care one way or another but I figured if nothing else this might give everyone a good laugh. It’s not everyday one has an edible encounter with a cryptid. Last week I was running late to work and decided to pop into Chick-Fil-A to grab a quick meal to bring with me. I get to work and start munching away on my chicken strips and fries combo when I came [...]
Mystery Birds in Annual Christmas Counts
This is the time of year throughout North America when birders take their annual “Christmas counts.” This involves identifying and counting what bird species birders and casual observers have seen in their area. Besides the various extremely large avian cryptids that avoid detention by having small numbers, being ignored, flying too high, hiding, and remaining in remote locations, mystery birds do turn up. You have to read Christmas counts closely to find them, but they are there. Most are eventually seen as identified species that have turned up in out-of-place sites. For example, on December 29, 2007, Mike Jacobs of [...]
40th Anniversary of Silver Bridge Collapse
December 15, 2007, is the 40th anniversary of the collapse of the Silver Bridge over the Ohio River. This year has been one of reflection with regard to this event. John A. Keel (above), who has written about Mothman as well as the suicides and deaths associated with it for decades, had his 1975 book turned into its namesake movie, The Mothman Prophecies, in 2002. Following is the clip from that motion picture of the dramatic recreation of the Silver Bridge collapse of December 15, 1967, which has been compared to the I-35W Bridge collapse of August 1st, 2007. In [...]
