Yuriy N. Morozov, 55, a well known Russian Fortean (anomalist) and leading authority on paleovisitology (the study of hypothetical ancient visitors to the Earth) died on April 29, 2007, in Moscow, Russia. Morozov’s death occurred after a short illness, according to his friend Vladimir Rubtsov, director of the Research Institute on Anomalous Phenomena (RIAP). [Rubtsov is himself famed for his studies of Tunguska (1972-2001) and his intriguing winged weirdies article in FSR1979, “A Flying ‘Man’ in Black in Russia.”] Yuriy Morozov was an advocate for the linking of all studies of unexplained phenomena, anomalistics, under one tent. He addressed the [...]

Best Witnesses: Biologists or Truck Drivers?
This Pitt Lake, British Columbia, Sasquatch was seen by two prospectors in June 1965. Should we discount this sighting because the eyewitnesses weren’t biologists? Credit: Harry Trumbore’s drawing from The Field Guide of Bigfoot and Other Mystery Primates. Regarding a couple quick comments there, however, I thought I would separate them out from the terminology debate. Some people have noted that it seems certain states and provinces may not appear to be able to support a population of Bigfoot living there. But, remember, reports do not necessarily reflect that Bigfoot live where they are sighted, but only they have been [...]

Is “Scoftic” A Useful Term?
“Scoftic” has to be the most ridiculous word in the current lexicon of Bigfoot research.Nightwing, November 2006 “Scoftic” – a Roger Knights neologism.Matt Crowley, September 2005 Sometime before the fall of 2003, Roger Knights, a frequent comment maker on all matters Bigfoot, decided to coin a word that he felt would be a counter to words like “pseudoscience.” According to his own accounting, Knights first used “scoftic” on the Bigfoot Forums on September 13, 2003. No, it was not a Friday, but the date in the old Roman festival calendar is epulum Iovis (“banquet of Jupiter”), on the Ides, during [...]
MA7 – The Date Is Here!
The date of April 24th is upon us. Celebrate with me the release of my book today! I’m over at Lake Champlain, hunting Champ animals with a Nippon TV crew, but I’ve left this message to be posted here. I’ll mention again how much help you can be to my book and, yes, so many other authors trying to convince publishers this is a cool subject, by buying the 2007 edition of Mysterious America: The Ultimate Guide to the Nation’s Weirdest Wonders, Strangest Spots, and Creepiest Creatures on April 24th! Why should we let only, for example, the diet books, [...]
Editor of Yeti Newsletter Arrested
April 18, 2007 Some Colorado campuses are raising security measures in the wake of Monday’s massacre at Virginia Tech and on the eve of the eighth anniversary of bloodshed at Columbine High School. The University of Colorado, the University of Northern Colorado and Boulder High School were investigating incidents Tuesday related to threats and potential disturbances. CU campus police arrested a student for investigation of interfering with staff members and students after he engaged in a heated discussion with classmates over the Virginia Tech rampage and said that he “would be capable of killing 32 people,” Cmdr. Brad Wiesley said. [...]
1977: Year Of The Creature
After I posted this morning’s blog “Flashback: Thirty Year Ago – South Dakota Bigfoot,”” about a Bigfoot flap taking place in 1977, Scott Maruna at The Anomalist commented: “Come to think of it, there were a lot of flaps going on that year.” Indeed, there were. The anniversary of the Dover Demon sightings (April 21-22, 1977) is rapidly approaching. On April 21, 2007, I’ll be a guest on the “Dover Demon” 30th Anniversary Special (“Dover Demon” is a chapter in Mysterious America), from 10 pm to Midnight, on the Eastern Spooky Southeast broadcast, on WBSM-AM, 1420 AM, New Bedford, Massachusetts. [...]
Kalanoro, Yeti and Lux
Images of hairy hominoids are popping up in all sorts of places. Harry Trumbore’s drawing (above) of Africa’s kalanoro, from The Field Guide to Bigfoot and Other Mystery Primates by Loren Coleman and Patrick Huyghe, inspired Peter Loh’s Kalanoro (below) in the Crypto-Man Comix, written by Scott Marlowe. Wildlife artist Richard Klyver, who spent seven years in Africa, has produced a new series of high-quality tee-shirts. His first one is an excellently accurate drawing of what the Abominable Snowman or Yeti probably looks like, as shown above. If you want to buy one or more of these limited edition tee-shirts [...]
