A new year is always exciting, for no telling what it holds. New species to be discovered? Of course. New cryptid sightings? Certainly. New cryptozoology books being published? Needless to say. The Top Cryptozoology Books of 2007 have been picked and discussed, so it is time to look to the future. There, indeed, are hints of many new cryptozoology books on the horizon. Let me split them between the nonfiction and cryptofiction. Cryptozoology Nonfiction Titles Ivan T. Sanderson’s classic book, Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come to Life has been republished by Cosimo in 2008, with a new preface. I have already [...]
Classic Yeti Images
With the death of Sir Edmund Hillary and Yeti images of the photographs from that era (1950s and 1960s), insights into the evolution of how the Abominable Snowmen were viewed can be considered through the lenses of time and distance. The first image shared here (click on Perkins Yeti) is the 1960 lifesize drawing shown by then-Lincoln Park Zoo director Marlin Perkins before the World Book expedition to the Himalayas with Sir Edmund Hillary. (This may be different than the large cutout Perkins showed on “Wild Kingdom” in 1963, or it may be the same one.) Below is the slightly [...]
Giant Monkey of New Hampshire
As the voters go to the polls in New Hampshire, it is a good time to pause and recall the “Giant Monkey” of Danville, New Hampshire. Have you heard about it? On September 9, a few years ago, in rural Danville, New Hampshire, search parties were engaged in looking for a Giant Monkey spotted near Pleasant Street and Kingston Road. During a period of the previous two weeks, at least ten cryptid Giant Monkey sightings were reported to local authorities. Danville Fire Chief David Kimball was among the first to see the cryptid running across Kingston Road. Others, like Pleasant [...]

The Top Cryptozoology Books of 2007
The Top Cryptozoology Books of 2007 by Loren Coleman, Cryptozoology A to Z, Bigfoot!, and Tom Slick It is time for my annual top picks for the best cryptozoology books of 2007, with attention to each book’s individual achievements noted in recognition of its unique niche within the cryptozoological literature for this year. Since 2000, I have published my annual “best of lists” in cryptozoology, regarding books, events, and people. Please visit the list for the top books of 2006, for example. Each year has been different, and 2007 is unique, as well. In 2007, there was a good crop [...]
Mystery Birds in Annual Christmas Counts
This is the time of year throughout North America when birders take their annual “Christmas counts.” This involves identifying and counting what bird species birders and casual observers have seen in their area. Besides the various extremely large avian cryptids that avoid detention by having small numbers, being ignored, flying too high, hiding, and remaining in remote locations, mystery birds do turn up. You have to read Christmas counts closely to find them, but they are there. Most are eventually seen as identified species that have turned up in out-of-place sites. For example, on December 29, 2007, Mike Jacobs of [...]
2007 Brings Bigfoot Back to the States
This was dispatched by the Wireless Flash News Service today, based, of course, on my “Top Ten Bigfoot Stories of 2007.” (For the record, I’ve noted some of the media-added errors.) 2007 BRINGS BIGFOOT BACK TO THE STATES PORTLAND, Maine (Wireless Flash) — 2007 was big year for Bigfoot in America. Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman says the past year has launched Bigfoot into the spotlight and brought back interest for the hairy creature in America after some very credible stateside sightings. For instance, the red-haired “skunk ape” lurking around in Florida suggested that a relative of Bigfoot may be living in [...]
Top Cryptozoology Stories Picked as Best of the Best
In today’s Washington City Paper, columnist Mark Athitakis has picked his “The Best of the Best,” which are his “top ten favorite best-of-the-year lists” for 2007. His # 6 is noted as: Top Ten Cryptozoology Stories (Cryptomundo)
Pick “Bigfoot” For Seven Fortean Wonders, Round 3
Congratulations! Voters from Cryptomundo appear to have had an impact on the Round 2 polling for “The Seven Fortean Wonders of the World.” The final results for Round 2 are in, and of 151 votes, fully 35% (53 votes) were for “Bigfoot / Yeti.” After the choice of the location of Loch Ness was lost in Round 1, due to neglect on the part of our community, I felt it important for our voices to be heard by voting for the only cryptozoology choice left: “Bigfoot / Yeti.” I put out the call and you responded. Thank you! You did [...]
Ten Notable 2007 Cryptozoology Deaths
Ten Notable 2007 Cryptozoology Deaths by Loren Coleman, author of the biography, Tom Slick: True Life Encounters in Cryptozoology . Who did we lose this year in the field of cryptozoology? In 2006, I easily assembled a list of 25 notables, but it is obvious that far fewer people connected to cryptozoology passed away in 2007. The following is a roundup of ten significant personalities who died this year. It includes two Mystery Cat investigators, two Bigfoot researchers, two cryptofiction authors (one of whom made coelacanth-related findings), three involved in discovering or rediscovering new or formerly extinct species, and one [...]
