This is the week, 35 years ago that Roger Patterson, rodeo rider, songwriter, and Bigfoot hunter, died. Thirty-five years! How time flies. During the next twelve months you will find your calendar filled with anniversaries that hit close to home, if you are interested in cryptids and other "strange things" that happen all the time. This year is the 400th anniversary of the founding of Virginia’s Jamestown colony and is (according to various media) the biggest milestone of the year in the United States of America. Intriguingly, 2007 will see the publication of many books about Virginia, including Weird Virginia. [...]
Track of the Cat’s Bezzerides Dies
A.I. Bezzerides, 98, a novelist-turned-screenwriter best known for post-World War II film noir classics such as Kiss Me Deadly, On Dangerous Ground and Thieves’ Highway , died January 1, 2007, after a brief illness. Albert Isaac Bezzerides was born Aug. 9, 1908, in Samsun, Turkey. His mother was Armenian and his father a Turkish-speaking Greek. He moved to America with his parents by age 2, and they settled in Fresno, where his father worked in the fields before becoming a produce-hauling trucker. He is perhaps most remembered for a style he applied to his best-remembered work, the 1938 novel Long [...]
Searching For the Ropen in New Guinea: “Destination Truth” Makes Contact From Rainforest
I have heard from Neil Mandt (above), the executive producer for "Destination Truth," the new series that will be appearing on the Sci Fi Channel this spring. He’s been corresponding with me for some months now, and decided to give Cryptomundo an exclusive on what he and his crew are up to right now. One location the series explored was Johor (above) to investigate reports of the Malaysian Bigfoot. Another they are going to deal with is Mongolia. Incredibly, thanks to modern technology, Neil emailed me yesterday – from the rainforest – to give me an update and exclusive on [...]
“Destination Truth” Gets Green Light
The Hollywood Reporter is spreading the news that “Destination Truth” on the Sci Fi Channel is a go for April 2007. After the Destination: Truth expedition of February 20, 2006, found footprints at Kampung Lukut, a new wave of ecotourism was stimulated and foreign tour groups began arriving. The cast discussed around the world: Joshua Gates shows the media the footprint cast the “Destination Truth” team discovered in February 2006. Reporter Kimberly Nordyke writes: The six-episode weekly reality show features Josh Gates, described as a world adventurer and “eager truth-seeker,” visiting a different destination every week with his small crew [...]

Animal X Researcher Dies
One of the “Animal X” staff members died in 2006, but I am lacking a specific date on which the death occurred. The program’s Tony White, 54, died an untimely death, from a massive heart attack in Australia. He was the show’s senior researcher and died during the production of “Animal X: Natural Mystery Unit.” White had also been involved in the endangered species series “Before It’s Too Late” and the general animal series, “Animal Allies.” He furthermore had a weekly radio show in the UK and some years ago he wrote a four-part documentary series for BBC Radio on [...]

Drinking On Your Next Cryptid Expedition?
In November 2006, National Geographic Channel began screening one of their hour-long documentaries in the “Is It Real?” Series. It was on the Almas of Mongolia and the Almasty allegedly populating the Caucasus. They called their program, “Russian Bigfoot.” Craig Woolheater’s post here stimulated some intriguing comments, on both sides of the fence. There was, of course, much to condemn in the program, from the mixing of two different stories – one on DNA sampling of the western variety of unknown hominids based on second generation finds to the fact that the film crew used a one-day investigation in the [...]
