My sinister dark side (above) is given some cartoon life, circa 2000, by an unknown artist on Fox TV’s “Freaky Links” production team (who had just become famous for their Blair Witch Horror). It is weird to see yourself through others’ eyes and realize the vision can be so similar, or not, among different artists. I’ve been on television, my photograph is not rare, and yet, here’s how artists, years apart, “see me.” In 2004, racing through the pages of Swamp Thing #7 and #8, I was depicted as “Coleman Wadsworth,” cryptozoologist (above and directly below, running for my life [...]
Bigfoot Media Mania Continues
It is not your imagination. Bigfoot news is all over the map. New sightings and stories are popping up about them. Old cases discussed in recent newspaper items are being published about 1970s’ Illinois reports and Missouri flaps. Exhibition news is coming out of Kansas City, and plans for Jefferson, Texas, Bigfoot museum continues onward. A Skunk Ape is allegedly photographed in Florida, maybe a “chimpanzee” one too (above), and now debates are getting new fire under them. The pot is heating up in Malaysia again. Yowies now come into play too. Then, of course, there’s that Idaho professor friend [...]
Slave Ships’ Apes
Could the “North American Apes” (Napes) have come over from Africa via slave ships? Napes is the term I coined to gather the names of Skunk Apes, Boogers, Swamp Apes, and other cryptid anthropoids from the SE USA under one umbrella moniker. I see Napes as a form of unknown ape, and not the Neo-Giant, not the classic Bigfoot. I began talking about these ideas some four decades ago, and presented formally in various public talks even before writing about them in later books and contributed chapters. For example, I gave “The Occurrence of Wild Apes in North America,” as [...]
More On Deer-Grabbing Bigfoot
What did the deer-grabbing Bigfoot look like? We still don’t know, and the above drawing by Richard Klyver has nothing to do with this Wisconsin report. Please, someone, ask Steven Krueger to describe what he saw, how it moved, how it jumped, and how it carried the deer, for starters! Please. In the wake of the first reports of the Bigfoot that grabbed a deer, the story is getting spun in various Wisconsin media. The following news item, although it does not mention the eyewitness by name, is about this week’s Wisconsin sighting by Steven Krueger, identified below as a [...]
KC’s Kids CZ Book List
Looking for some suggestions for your holiday gift-giving to add to the book shelves of cryptozoologists-in-training? Trying to come up with colorful presents for those stockings? Here’s some book ideas that are being put out there for kids who are visiting the activities and the current Missouri home of the traveling exhibition that left Bates College only a few weeks ago. The Kansas City Library’s children’s services are recommending various kid-friendly books to go with the new exhibition at the H & R Artspace, the show that is entitled “Cryptozoology: Out of Time Place Scale.” One section of the traveling [...]
Creature From the Black Lagoon Again
Boing Boing has a good new posting on the just-released Creature From the Black Lagoon novel. Cory Doctorow writes: "If you’re looking for a fun little paperback to take you away from your life for a couple hours, you need look no further." Perhaps we all will need this after the election is over today… As I’ve mentioned at Cryptomundo before, the original concept for the movie developed from the excitement in the early 1950s that surrounded the Comoros Islands (near Madagascar) discovery of a "living fossil," the coelacanth. After its initial find in 1938, and the eventual acceptance that [...]
Satyrs
Want to talk about a weird creature for Halloween? How about the really bizarre ones – the Goatmen, Hoofed Horrors, and other strange beasties that seem to have their legs on backwards and appear to have rigid feet? Is there another form of "Bigfoot" out there? One hominologist appears to think so, and a filmmaker has passed along new "old" stories for me, for us to ponder. Goatmen stories have been heard about in cryptid circles from such high profile locations as Maryland-Virginia, near Washington D. C. And, no, people weren’t talking about the politicians. Thirty years ago, I was [...]
Loren Coleman’s Top Cryptids
Halloween 2006 seems as good a time as any to publish a response to several requests I have received lately for my top ten picks in cryptids, those animals that serve as the focus of cryptozoologists. Of course, thinking outside the lines, as I always do, I had to choose thirteen. Also, I had to create two parallel lists. One is for those supported by what I see as the most credible evidence, in my opinion only. For the other group, I see this one as viewed through the public’s eye, those most popular cryptids, monsters, crypto-creatures, or whatever the [...]
