New Flying Fox Discovered

The pictured flying fox (above) is the Ausytralian grey-headed flying-fox (Pteropus poliocephalus), which was first described in 1825 by Temminck. A new species of flying fox or fruit bat has been discovered. A new species of flying fox or fruit bat has been found and verified from Mindoro Island, south of Manila, Philippines, it was reported Monday, September 17, 2007, by the news service AFP and other media sources. The orange-colored bat with a distinctive white-stripped face was discovered in a protected wildlife area of Mindoro Island, as detailed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Known as [...]

Steve Irwin’s New Turtle Discovery

Steve Irwin’s father, Bob, pictured lower left, discusses the naming of the new turtle, lower right, after Steve. To round out the picture of the late Steve Irwin’s contributions to cryptozoology, beyond his search for Thylacines, it is worthy of mentioning that Steve Irwin discovered a new animal, a turtle, which has now been named after him. Television personality Steve “Crocodile Hunter” Irwin and his father, Bob, caught a unknown turtle on a fishing line during a camping trip in 1990. It was new to them, and thus Steve took photographs and sent them to turtle authority John Cann. After [...]

Kouprey: A Separate Species

One of the first photographs taken in the wild of the elusive kouprey. Kouprey (Bos sauveli), a wild forest-dwelling ox, was discovered in 1937. (Indeed, the kouprey is discussed as an animal of discovery in cryptozoology, on page 128, here.) Cryptomundo has discussed the ongoing debate about the reality of the kouprey here before. This photograph (above) was taken in 1937 of a kouprey at the Vincenes Zoo, Paris; the animal died in 1940. Nature, 449, 124 (13 September 2007) has published in their “Advance Online Publication” of September 12, 2007, the breaking news that the Kouprey (Bos sauveli) has [...]

You Are Cryptomundo

Our secret is out. Cryptomundo is fun and visited by people that enjoy exploring the edge. You are adventurers. You are explorers. You are romantic zoologists. You are cryptozoologists. And none of us deny it. It is always intriguing to read of my pursuit from others’ points of view, which can give me some interesting global insights. At Chewing Pixels, in the blog “Cryptozoology and Nintendo,” the observer writes about Cryptomundo: This mixture of content ensnares the reader by effectively holding the plausible and the mostly implausible in delicate tension – acceptable because both the announcement of the discovery of [...]

New Thai Gecko and Skink

New species of gecko and skink were discovered in the forest of Chiang Dao mountain in Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Mai amid fears that forest fires might cause their extinction, a wildlife official said Wednesday. Piyawan Niyomwan, a researcher of the National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department (DNP), said the new species were coincidentally caught in a trap, erected for the study of wild animals’ biological diversity. Four brown skinks of the Tropidophorus sp. family, with scales on their heads, were longer than those of normal ones. Each of their bodies was five-cm long and the tails six-cm [...]

New: Hawaiian Fish, Panama Salamanders, and Madagascar Millipedes

Marine biologist Marc Hughes was recently successful in catching a new species of the genus Grammonus, an unusual six inch long brown fish. Hughes had been searching for these fish since he first encountered one of them in 1998, off Hawaii. The new Hawaiian fish (above) discovered and photographed by Marc Hughes. The Honolulu Star-Bulletin reporter Rod Thompson writes: Hughes was studying micro-mollusks that look like sand in the South Kona cave near Kona Paradise subdivision in 1998 when he spotted the unusual fish and took a picture. Another photographer took a picture at about the same time. The fish [...]

New Hawaiian Shark Discovered

Click here for news of a new species of shark found over 3000 feet deep off Hawaii, as per this KHON broadcast. It survived for five days alive, and was recorded quite closely by scientists and journalists. Funny, its shape and head sort of reminded me of this:

New Shark Discovered

Mark Clarke over at Practical Fishkeeling is noting there’s been a “new Mandarin shark discovered,” and named from south eastern Australia. William White, Peter Last and John Stevens of Australia’s CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research named the new species Cirrhigaleus australis in an announcement paper in the newest issue of the journal Zootaxa. Clarke writes, “Cirrhigaleus australis is a member of the Mandarin dogfish group of squalid sharks which typically reach lengths of just a metre or so….The new species is believed to occur in temperate waters off eastern Australia and its range may extend as far as New Zealand. [...]

New Moa Photos For Sale

Editorial Commentary Is cryptozoology the newest big time marketable niche to be discovered or exploited? It appears to be so. There’s the Shipton Yeti footprints photographs auction that I’m discussing at Cryptomundo also today, and now this business of someone selling new photographs of moa tracks and the pictures of the animals themselves. I think it’s one thing to sell off historical items (even though I have reservations about these disappearing into private collections). But these alleged moa discoveries have not even been properly noted and discussed, examined and explored for their possible value to the knowledge base of what [...]

Red Elephants of New Guinea

I receive good questions emailed to me via my lorencoleman.com website’s contact form. For example, a Japanese reader asked today about an interesting subject, which I will label as the Red Elephants of New Guinea: Hello, I enjoyed reading your website. Thank you. I have read a Japanese book about cryptozoology by Mr. Tatsuo Saneyoshi. In the book the author mentioned red elephants that were sighted in the Nassau Mountains, Indonesia by two American Navy pilots on June 15, 1952. Mr. Tatsuo Saneyoshi is a well-known cryptozoologist in Japan. In his book he also states that those pilots who sighted [...]
