Get ready. They are coming. Not by land or sea, but by the airwaves. The invasion has begun. They are here! Have you noticed that when the thoughtful pieces on cryptozoology turn up, the segments are populated by “friends of the family,” commenting on the subjects under discussion? Have you also noticed the manufactured tension in these appearances? Often the media naturally sets up the “good cop, bad cop” scenario for their stories, and you should expect to see it again this week (if not on the History Channel, certainly in the stories done in the wake of “Birdzilla”). How [...]
The Flatwoods Monster Decoded
The date was September 12, 1952. The place, Flatwoods, West Virginia. On that crisp fall day, Kathleen May (pictured), Eugene Lemon, 17, Neal Nunley, 14, Eddie May, 13, Teddie May, 14, Ronald Shaver, 10, Teddie Neal, 10, Tommy Hyer, 10, and Lemon’s big old dog, climbed to the top of a hill and saw a “monster.” They immediately felt they had to run, as fast as they could, someplace. The huge dark figure with glowing eyes and a head “like the ace of spades” blocked their path. About 12 feet high (4 meters), the figure had a reddish face and [...]
Mothman on Halloween
Jeff Rense and Brad Steiger wanted to talk a good deal about Mothman for Halloween on The Jeff Rense Show the eeeevvvvveeening of October 31, 2007. (Sorry, they were imitating vampires at the beginning of the show, and it sort of caught on.) Then after the program was over, I noticed this new posting about Mothman on Halloween. It’s a small world, isn’t it? Coming in 2008: Mothman: Evil Incarnate.
Japan’s Standing Panda & More Video
Did you know that this strange bipedal behavior of a standing red panda has been all the rage in Japan? Here’s a fun video on a diversity of the following noted Fortean and cryptozoological topics, which ends with a suggested solution to the Standing Panda’s appearance. Mothman; Chupacabras; Bigfoot (with a ghost face in the background); Tsuchinoko (crypto-creature famous in Japan); Nessie; Alien with FBI/KGB/Gestapo agents (actually a “Talk of the Times” newspaper hoax); Flatwoods Monster; The Doll with growing hair (another typically Japanese Forteana); Aliens play with cattle mutilations; Crop circles, by drawing Doraemon; A play on a famous [...]
A Man and His (Weird) Museum
The Lewiston Sun Journal came for a visit to my museum. Here’s the way reporter Kathryn Skelton experienced it. And me. Weird, Wicked Weird A man and his (weird) museum Hair from Sir Edmund Hillary’s Yeti expedition, water from Loch Ness, a 9-foot latex pterodactyl, Loren Coleman’s got it all. Sometime next spring, Loren Coleman’s getting a 12-foot-long replica of Canada’s Ogopogo lake monster. It’ll probably have to stay on the porch, near his 8.5-foot-tall, oxen-haired Bigfoot. Coleman is a little pressed for space indoors. There’s already a 9-foot latex pterodactyl camouflaged by an avocado tree and a cabinet of [...]
In Pursuit of Cryptozoology
You have many choices of events to attend during the last quarter of 2007. Here are some visual reminders of the upcoming end of the year Cryptozoology conferences: Saturday, December 1, 2007, “Introduction to Cryptozoology,” Mythic Creatures, American Museum of Natural History, New York City, New York. The AMNH model of Gigantopithecus is part of the “Mythic Creatures” exhibition. These conferences and other recent gatherings have produced some rather elaborate and intriguing forms of promotional art, demonstrating a new love of monsters, creatures, and cryptids on posters. Perhaps we are entering a new era of creative imagery in cryptozoological art [...]
Mothman 2008
While nothing will ever match the David Grabias 2002 documentary Search for the Mothman, now bundled in the Deluxe DVD/The Mothman Prophecies, production companies keep cranking out ones filled with interviews with old eyewitnesses. Of course, there is no footage of Mothman, so they all are following the same path here. Black River Films has a new doc in production, and you can get a preview of its beginning at their site. The number of documentaries specifically for television about Mothman also continues to increase. News of an another being taped in Mothman country for the 2008 season is noted [...]
Not Missing
It has been determined that this was a hoax. Please disregard. The police may become involved in this unfortunate false missing person report.

Mothman’s Fate
The image of Mothman has changed in the last forty years. Fiction from the film has shown up as fact in popular culture. Is this Mothman’s fate? I’ve noticed that the drawings of Mothman have evolved, often negatively, from the early days of what the witnesses said they saw to the elaborate fictions we see on the cover of Fate this month. Good art does not equal historical representations or forensic drawings. Mothmen didn’t have hands with four fingers, toes with claws, well-defined rib cages, or leathery wings. Most of those details were not even seen or were described differently. [...]
