Year of the Yeti Begins Now!

This Friday will be the official launch of the new publication of the reasonably-priced hardback edition of Ivan T. Sanderson’s classic book, Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come to Life, from Cosimo Classics. This new printing contains a new preface I’ve written, and I will have a few copies, hot off the press, literally, for sale at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City. I also will have copies of two other books I’ve written that contain large sections about the Yeti: Tom Slick: True Life Encounters in Cryptozoology and The Field Guide to Bigfoot and Other Mystery Primates Worldwide [...]

Bring Forth The Track Cast of Nessie!

A few years ago, the cry across the land was to have the head of a Sea-Serpent brought to Science. I place the same kind of call out there regarding the alleged track cast of the footprint of the Loch Ness Monster collected in December 1933, some 74 years ago. Of course, we all take it to heart that the footprints found on the shores of Loch Ness were fakes made by Marmaduke Wetherell. But within cryptozoology, we must be skeptical in all directions. How many times have I heard about a “hoax” claim, especially with tracks, which has as [...]

Send A Cryptozoologist, Not A Travel Writer

Why don’t travel companies send cryptozoology authors and bloggers in pursuit of cryptids and accomodations at Loch Ness, among the Himalayas, in the Cameroons, along the Amazon, or near the veldt of South Africa, instead of travel writers? It totally amazes me that travel promotion organizations get it so wrong, so often. Case in point, there was a remarkably good initial idea from some thoughtful people at Visit Britain and Visit Scotland with the new movie The Water Horse coming out: Send some travel writers to Scotland. An example from yesterday is what they got from the computer of Sarah [...]

Two New Poison Dart Frogs Discovered

Two new species of frog, both so-called poison dart frogs because they are the colorful variety possessing toxics used by native peoples on the arrows of their darts, have been located in Colombia. Specifically, they were found in the Central Cordillera of Colombia by Alonso Quevedo from ProAves and Oscar Gallego from Tolima University. The frogs, just formally announced, were first discovered in July, 2006, when the research team was looking for endangered bird species in the Central Mountain Range. The new frogs have been given the names Ranitomeya tolimense and Ranitomeya doriswansoni. Ranitomeya doriswansoni is black and red. Ranitomeya [...]

Maine Mountain Lion Study Group

A group of Dexter Regional High School students and their teacher-adviser Regan McPhetres plan to investigate and prove the existence of mountain lions in Maine. McPhetres, who along with another teacher ran a similar program from 1992 through 2001 in the Winslow-Waterville area, believes there is plenty of evidence that the elusive creatures have a presence in Maine. “There’s evidence they exist around us,” McPhetres said Sunday, despite the reluctance of some state officials to embrace the findings. He said confirmed sightings have been reported in Vermont, New Hampshire and New Brunswick. Mountain lions are supposed to be extinct east [...]
