I resisted calling this blog, “Sex and the Not-So-Single-Nessie.” But that title would have worked, probably. People – at least the broader general public – are not listening but you’ve been reading it here for weeks. Publicity from the Holmes Nessie video in June, debates about the Chinese Lake Monster footage all summer, and now this recent back and forth about Loch Ness sightings of cryptids being down are only the tip of the iceberg. While some silly columnists writing commentaries about “Nessie being dead” have made foolish mistakes such as talking about “one monster” and seriously bringing up circus [...]
Boing Boing Frogs
Nyctibatrachus minimus, the tiny nightfrog of India. Conraua goliath, the goliath frog of West Africa. We shall pick up an existence by its frogs. Wise men have tried other ways. They have tried to understand our state of being, by grasping at its stars, or its arts, or its economics. But, if there is an underlying oneness of all things, it does not matter where we begin, whether with stars, or laws of supply and demand, or frogs, or Napoleon Bonaparte. One measures a circle, beginning anywhere.Charles Fort, Lo! After I posted my blog (“Incredibly Tiny Frog Discovered”) on the [...]
Peter Matthiessen on Wildpeople
Peter Matthiessen, who is perhaps best known for his books The Snow Leopard (1978) and In the Spirit of Crazy Horse (1983), will be speaking in Idaho on October 19, on the topic “A Naturalist’s Impressions of the Wildman.” He will be sharing his insights about Yeti and Sasquatch, in a lecture arranged by anthropologist Jeff Meldrum. Those who have closely read In the Spirit of Crazy Horse recall that Matthiessen talked of the Dakota/Lakota traditions and encounters with their “Big Men,” the local moniker for the Sasquatch. Peter Matthiessen (b. May 22, 1927, New York City) is an American [...]
Mystery Mammal Defies Identification
No photographs have been taken of this mystery animal or I would have posted them. But certainly something strange is being seen in the Wimbledon Common, London, England. According to an eyewitness a strange animal similar to a squirrel is hiding out on the common leaving people wondering what kind of beast it could be. So far educated guesses on website Wild About Britain have included the Australasian sugar glider, the North American flying squirrel or another species of possum. Rather more tongue-in-cheek suggestions have included a flying womble – on account of the common being home to the fictional [...]
Incredibly Tiny Frog Discovered
This newly discovered frog, full-grown, is only 0.3937 inches or 10 mm (or 1 cm) tiny, and is shown above sitting on an Indian 5 rupee coin. Delhi University Systematics biologist S. D. Biju and his colleagues have found this new frog, India’s smallest land vertebrate, in the Western Ghats of Kerala, a mountainous region in the western portion of India. The humid rainforests of the Western Ghats are the perfect habitat for these nocturnal frogs, which enjoy making mating calls from under leaf litter and among the roots of ferns during the monsoon months. The common name for its [...]
In Pursuit of Cryptozoology
You have many choices of events to attend during the last quarter of 2007. Here are some visual reminders of the upcoming end of the year Cryptozoology conferences: Saturday, December 1, 2007, “Introduction to Cryptozoology,” Mythic Creatures, American Museum of Natural History, New York City, New York. The AMNH model of Gigantopithecus is part of the “Mythic Creatures” exhibition. These conferences and other recent gatherings have produced some rather elaborate and intriguing forms of promotional art, demonstrating a new love of monsters, creatures, and cryptids on posters. Perhaps we are entering a new era of creative imagery in cryptozoological art [...]
Lake Erie Monster, 1887
A special to the N.Y. Times from Locust Point, on the shore of Lake Erie, near Toledo, Ohio, says, “The French settlers along the lake shore, in Erie Township, Ottawa County, a few miles east of here, were surprised and amazed on May 12th over the appearance of an unknown fish of mammoth size. Two brothers named Dusseau, both fishermen, were returning from the fishing grounds, when they discovered a phosphorescent mass upon the beach. It was late in the evening, but they succeeded in making their boat fast to the shore, and, upon examination, discovered a lake monster writhing [...]
Mystery Animal Attacks Horse
Troopers in Fredonia [New York] are looking into a report that an unknown wild animal attacked an Arabian horse around 11 pm Thursday night [September 27, 2007]. Investigators say the horse suffered numerous bite and claw marks in the attack in a pasture on Harmon Hill Road in the town of Pomfret. The animal was treated by a local vet and is expected to be ok. Local residents are urged to call the state police at Fredonia with information about this or any future sightings or incidents with large non-domestic animals. by Greg Borowski, Producer, “State Police Investigating Attack On [...]
Exit The Wolfman: Gable Film Update
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.Friedrich Nietzsche The Gable Film is merely, as seemed obvious in the beginning, an alleged hoax. Many readers have sent in comments and links. I will pluck one, that of Cyptomundo reader SC, as an example that gets directly to the point: Follow this link to read Mr. Steve Cook’s explanation as to the nature of the “unintended hoax.” It seems three frames of the film reveal a [...]
Soviet Hominologists Were Right: Siberian Neandertals
Palaeoarchaeological findings appear to be catching up to hominology, the segment of cryptozoology studying unknown hominoids. For some time, a few of us have studied various reports of what might be surviving Neandertals* in Siberia and China. Whether called Mecheny, Mirygdy, Chuchunaa, Mulen, or Wildmen, some Soviet Snowmen Commission scientists and a few Chinese in the last century theorized we might be dealing with relict populations of Neandertals. Especially intriguing are the Chuchunaa, the often clothed, eastern version of the Mirygdy, seen in Eastern Siberia. (Perhaps further research will also show the fossil Neandertals were a bit larger in their [...]
