Tim Binnall, a radio journalist of some note, attended the Mass Monster Mash and gathered several interviews. Watch his site, Binnall of America for his forthcoming commentary and interviews. John Horrigan, an excellent host and conference organizer, honored Tim with two well-deserved recognition plaques on both nights of the events. Tim also took photographs. He is the first to publish images from the conference on the web. Here’s two: Tim with me and Tim with Don Keating. Don gave a good Fortean talk on his “White Sasquatch” video, and I gave the first lecture of my life exclusively on the [...]
At Mass Monster Mash
I’m on the road again. This time I am at the “Mass Monster Mash,” in Watertown, Massachusetts, on Saturday, October 13, 2007, giving an illustrated (almost 50 images) on the Dover Demon. I also will be talking to folks, and selling/signing books. Since others there are speaking on Bigfoot, the Bridgewater Triangle, and Phantom Clowns, I’ll have some things to say about those topics too, outside my keynote hourlong illustrated lecture. I will have a few new copies of the 2007 edition of Mysterious America with me. I also will bring along some copies of The Copycat Effect, Tom Slick: [...]
Peter Matthiessen on Wildpeople
Peter Matthiessen, who is perhaps best known for his books The Snow Leopard (1978) and In the Spirit of Crazy Horse (1983), will be speaking in Idaho on October 19, on the topic “A Naturalist’s Impressions of the Wildman.” He will be sharing his insights about Yeti and Sasquatch, in a lecture arranged by anthropologist Jeff Meldrum. Those who have closely read In the Spirit of Crazy Horse recall that Matthiessen talked of the Dakota/Lakota traditions and encounters with their “Big Men,” the local moniker for the Sasquatch. Peter Matthiessen (b. May 22, 1927, New York City) is an American [...]
In Pursuit of Cryptozoology
You have many choices of events to attend during the last quarter of 2007. Here are some visual reminders of the upcoming end of the year Cryptozoology conferences: Saturday, December 1, 2007, “Introduction to Cryptozoology,” Mythic Creatures, American Museum of Natural History, New York City, New York. The AMNH model of Gigantopithecus is part of the “Mythic Creatures” exhibition. These conferences and other recent gatherings have produced some rather elaborate and intriguing forms of promotional art, demonstrating a new love of monsters, creatures, and cryptids on posters. Perhaps we are entering a new era of creative imagery in cryptozoological art [...]

Symposium Cancelled
Word is reaching Cryptomundo that the October 20-21, 2007, National Bigfoot Symposium planned for Arcata, California, has been cancelled. The website that was sponsoring this event is announcing it has been cancelled, after various attempts to keep it alive have failed. We apologize for any confusion and any false associations anyone may have assumed from our attempts to pass along this breaking news. We are not linked to the symposium nor do we know anything about the actual decision-making that took place. We have no idea what’s happened with the symposium and are only posting here the essence of what [...]
Monster Weekend Report
Newcastle, UK: The home of the infamous Lambton Worm, known for its Curse and the Lambton Worm song. Journalist Tim Chapman shares his straight-from-the-scene report on the September 1-2, 2007, “Monster Weekend” in Newcastle, United Kingdom. With no official Fortean Times UnConvention this year (and, as I understand it, little prospect of one in the foreseeable future), FT stalwart Ian Simmons assumed the task of organising a partial substitute. Conveniently, Ian holds a senior job at the ‘Centre for Life’ science museum in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, which just happened to be hosting a ‘Myths & Monsters’ exhibition on loan from London’s Natural [...]
African Americans, Snallygasters & Mokele-Mbembes
Mokele-mbembe being killed by Pygmies; drawn by Bill Rebsamen and used with permission. Who are today’s and tomorrow’s African American cryptozoologists? When I was at the 5th Annual Texas Bigfoot Conference, held October 14-16, 2005, I found it was a good event. I discovered the gathering was attended by a wider diversity of people than I have seen in my three decades of presenting at Fortean, cryptozoological, and Bigfoot gatherings. Of the 500 people there, I noticed more families, more women, more Hispanics, and more Native peoples than at any other public Bigfoot meeting, conference, and presentation I’ve personally experienced. [...]
