“Perhaps when a man has special knowledge and special powers like my own, it rather encourages him to seek a complex explanation when a simpler one is at hand.” ~ Sherlock Holmes, in The Adventure of the Abbey Grange. The serial melodrama apparently continues. To tell you the truth, when I read the headline to the story late last night (November 18, 2007), “Bear trap set for mysterious ape,” I chuckled to myself. I immediately thought: “Dang, someone’s decided to finally attempt to catch Jacobs mangy bear.” But I read on, and was more startled than enlightened by what I [...]
Watch the Skies! Here Comes Birdzilla!
Get ready. They are coming. Not by land or sea, but by the airwaves. The invasion has begun. They are here! Have you noticed that when the thoughtful pieces on cryptozoology turn up, the segments are populated by “friends of the family,” commenting on the subjects under discussion? Have you also noticed the manufactured tension in these appearances? Often the media naturally sets up the “good cop, bad cop” scenario for their stories, and you should expect to see it again this week (if not on the History Channel, certainly in the stories done in the wake of “Birdzilla”). How [...]
More on Jacobs Bear
Here is a new short video analysis of the photographs of the Jacobs mangy bear. Of course, despite my opinion that might seem to agree with the conclusions of this video, the point must be made that most of the “Bigfoot” used on the following video for comparative reasons are fakes, hoaxes, people in suits, and such. I suppose this entire episode (but not this video) will be remembered as a moment in history, someday, and a clever way for the BRFO (sic) to obtain some visits to their site. Moving on.
Barta: Ethnoknown Viper Discovered
According to cryptozoologist Chad Arment, an apparently previously ethnoknown cryptid viper has been discovered. The barta, a feared snake, is well-known to the indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh. Arment points out that the alleged “suicide” (see below) is probably a misunderstanding of behavior. Protobothrops jerdoni is a known viper from India and Southeast Asia that may be related to the newly found snake. The following report is dateline Itanagar, India: A deadly hiss has emanated from the country’s easternmost state, Arunachal Pradesh. A three-member team discovered what could be a new species of pit viper snake, from the remote Sango [...]
Official Reportedly Explains Away “Orangutan”
Or does he? As often happens after a clear, concise sighting of something remarkable that then cannot easily be captured, a state or government authority, contrary to local officials, is quoted by the media in an attempt to “explain away” the reports. Charles Fort called this the “Wipe,” for it was a frequent technique for disposing of the uncomfortable reality of the data that would not disappear. It often was the media trying to move on from the story, as much as the quoted “expert.” In the recent case from Florida, those that reported the “orange or red ape” in [...]
Devil’s Lake and Black Mystery Cats Sighted
Sightings of Mystery Cats occur frequently. This last week saw continued activity around Devil’s Lake, North Dakota (apparently tan-colored) and in the Lambton area of Ontario (melanistic). The road out to the Cove, Lakeside Restaurant and Woodland Resort was deserted on Wednesday afternoon [November 14, 2007], no mountain lions in sight. Mary Jane Stubbe of Devils Lake was returning to her home near The Cove Lakeside Restaurant recently when she spotted a mountain lion, or a cougar as some call it. She claims to have seen the reclusive animal at the Cove road about a half-mile from Highway 19 close [...]

First Guyana Report
The Guyana traveling CFZ group has collected an old hairy hominid abduction story and news of a green scorpion. Jon Downes reports on this here, and writes of various communication difficulties. Their guide is Damon Gerard Corrie (shown at right, with Dr. Pritchard, the author of Encyclopedia of Turtles). Mr. Corrie is the founder and President of the Caribbean Herpetological Society. The following two items are the specific data coming out of the first contact with his five friends now traveling near the township of Letham Station: Apparently, about two years ago, two children – a boy, and a girl [...]
Update Vote Count: “Best Cryptozoologist”
Thank you for enjoying yourself and voting for the “Best Cryptozoologist.” We have now broken all records set in 2006, thanks to Cryptomundians. As you may recall, Paul Kimball opened his “2007 Zorgy Awards” for voting, based on the nominations he had received, a few days ago. He included a new category for voting this year (9th down on his list): “Best Cryptzoologist.” Here’s an update: Kimball reports that the folks from Cryptomundo are “rocking the vote” in his tallies. Of all the polls, as of mid-November, the “cryptozoologist” one is getting the most votes. The others have barely brought [...]
Doctoral Pupil & Darren Discover Dino
A dino in the dungeon? This is more big news from the forgotten basements one finds in museums, the hidden vaults and dingy dungeons that delight those that look in them. What was discovered?: Merely a brand new dinosaur. It will forever be known as Xenoposeidon proneneukos Taylor & Naish, 2007. Congratulations to our buddy Darren Naish and his student. Doctoral pupil Mike Taylor (above and below with the fossil specimen) and Darren Naish, Ph. D., have identified this dinosaur bone in the National History Museum of London’s collection as belonging to a new family of sauropod dinosaur. Darren Naish, [...]
