Tolkien’s hobbits walked an awful long way, but the real “hobbit”, Homo floresiensis, would not have got far. Its flat, clown-like feet probably limited its speed to what we would consider a stroll, and kept its travels short, says Bill Jungers, an anthropologist at the State University of New York in Stony Brook. “It’s never going to win the 100-yard dash, and it’s never going to win the marathon,” he says. He presented his conclusion at last week’s meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists in Columbus, Ohio. By analysing the nearly complete left foot of an 18,000-year-old hobbit [...]
Devilish Melanistic Panthers
Relatively old-fashioned wildlife and outdoors reporters are few and far between today, and especially in big city papers. But San Francisco is lucky enough to have one: Tom Stienstra. Stienstra has a history of being open-minded enough to pen and tackle thoughtful pieces on Sasquatch, which seems reasonable concerning his location. He also appears to be very aware of the jet-black felids that are often seen in Marin County and around the East Bay area. One difference I do have with this reporter, however, is his unfortunate and incorrect use of the word “mythic.” “Myths” are wrongly used with cryptids. [...]
Elephantopotamus Discovered
At least one species of proboscidean, a prehistoric relative of the elephant, lived in an aquatic environment, according to a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The extinct water-lover, which belonged to the genus Moeritherium and lived around 37 million years ago, appears to have munched on freshwater plants and spent most of its days in swamps or river systems, according to Alexander Liu, an earth sciences expert at the University of Oxford and the lead author of the study. The research team based its findings on a group of fossilized teeth found in [...]
Chicago Cougar Video
The story of the cougar killed in Chicago, detailed here yesterday, was documented by the visual news organizations. Here’s the video. The crowd of onlookers included representatives of the media.
Cougar Killed in Chicago
“Cougars don’t exist in Illinois,” we have all been told for years, especially before two 21st century incidents began to alert people to the notion eyewitnesses seeing the cats weren’t crazy. “They are extinct in the state,” officialdom still claimed. Now, beyond belief, a cougar or puma or mountain lion, whatever you wish to call it, has been killed on the North Side of Chicago on April 14, 2008. Obtaining an actual body is the ultimate proof, of course. The Chicago Tribune’s photographer Candice C. Cusic snapped the images on Monday, which sum up the story (below), from the felid [...]
Dragons Descend on Alberta
Reports of dragon sightings in Canada are to be taken seriously. A traveling exhibition from two primarily French locations will soon be visiting the Royal Alberta Museum. Due to the fact this will be its first installation in an English-speaking site, there may be more attention to it throughout North America rather immediately.
No “Bigfeet” Discovered
It is good to know that the legacy of Cryptomundo is assisting the literary world of Oregon’s Portland Mercury. Courtney Ferguson writes today about his search for whether “Bigfeet” is the correct word to use: After spending 10 minutes searching for the proper plural form of Sasquatch, I grew impatient. Was it Sasquatches? Could I use Bigfeet? Or was it a murder of Sasquatch? Finding little in the way of information on the New York Times site (two instances of Sasquatches) and absolutely nothing in the Chicago Manual of Style, I encountered this cryptid site! cryptomundo.com Eureka! Within cryptozoology, North [...]
Bigfoot Guitar
(AP Photo/Miami Beach Guitar Festival, Andy Newman) Just what every music-loving Sasquatch researcher needs: the Bigfoot Guitar. Obviously, I should have one for the museum. In this photo released by the Miami Beach Guitar Festival, guitar maker George Marlin strums on his Bigfoot creation at the Miami Beach Guitar Festival Sunday, April 13, 2008, in Miami Beach. The three-day festival that ended Sunday, attracted guitar makers, musicians and guitar collectors from around the United States. According to the National Association of Music Merchandisers, there are 30 million active guitar players in the America, accounting for more than $1.5 billion in [...]
Greater Boston Bigfoot Research Institute: Update
On Saturday, April 12, after nicely being put up for the night before by Helen Jacobson, president of the 826 Boston board, I was a guest of honor during the formal launching of the Greater Boston Bigfoot Research Institute (GBBRI), the unique literacy center, which just opened in Massachusetts. Above: The incredibly, simple but complex, to-the-point but creative, and intriguing but academically-appropriate GBBRI logo was designed by Amanda McCorkle of ColorQuarry.com. (BTW, it was a good decision for me to attend, despite my recent loss, as it connected me to the roots of good parenting, tutorship, and the future of [...]
Expedition Faux: The Battle for Media Attention
Two competing “Bigfoot” expeditions that appear to have more to do with media attention, got in the news over the weekend. 1) Over the weekend, the members of Matt Moneymaker’s Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization’s 2008 West Virginia Expedition did report hearing sounds and finding tracks believed to have been made by the elusive, apelike creature. We heard wood knocks along the Greenbrier River last night. ~ Steve Willis, a Cowen native and retired Army officer now living in Virginia, who led the expedition. 2) Meanwhile, in an account published over the weekend, according to a news reporter’s words, “In March, [...]
