Durham’s ‘gorilla’ Weird, Wicked Weird By Kathryn Skelton, Lewiston Sun-Journal Staff Writer, Lewiston, Maine Saturday, August 2, 2008 Was it really a bear? A hippie? A costumed hooligan? 35 years ago, something funky had this town talking. Young bike-riding friends were the first to see it: something big, hairy, scary. After one mom saw it, too – she described an ape peeking out from behind bushes – 30 police cars circled Durham with orders to shoot. Over several days, more townspeople would describe the animal as a black bear, a large dog, a chimpanzee, an orangutan, a gorilla. “George Huntington [...]
35 Years Ago: Maine’s “Gorilla”
The Maine news media are warming up their stories on the Durham “gorilla.” I’ve been contacted, asking me if I heard the rumor that a zoo released an ape in 1973, in Maine. Of course, I have not and have not been able to track down any factual basis to such a rumor. Besides, Maine doesn’t have any zoos, in general, other than seasonal ones at York and on Mt. Desert Island, and certainly none that lost or released an ape in 1973. Also, one sheriff’s deputy was tracked down by another reporter, but refused to talk to the media. [...]
Sexy Louisiana Swamp Monster Film
An intriguing new documentary film about the Honey Island Swamp Monster has been produced by Dana Holyfield. She reveals in it new footage she says she found of an apelike creature in the swamp. Here is Dana Holyfield’s trailer of her new film: A Documentary Film by Dana Holyfield. Thirteen eye-witness encounters. New Evidence found deep in the swamps. Here is Dana Holyfield’s recording, off her television, apparently, of Fox News’ report on her new documentary. If it is still online, the direct feed of the above Fox News report is here. To demonstrate the diversity of Dana Holyfield’s documentary [...]
Bigfoot Body on C2C
Okay, so the power was turned off in the bfters’ freezer in Georgia, they are telling us. Okay, they are being harassed. All the July fees for the bftrackers “expeditions” are being refunded. What does this all sound like to you? Is an exit scenario being developed? As I mentioned here yesterday, late last night a “Coast to Coast AM with George Noory” producer invited me to come on as their guest to discuss the Georgia Bigfoot body case and the Grassman episode of “MonsterQuest.” I was exhausted from the Royal Alberta Museum jetlag, so I respectfully declined. The program [...]
History In The Making: Bigfoot Body Taken?
Has the first Bigfoot body been taken? Ask yourself, how will the first Bigfoot be found, discovered, and displayed? Will it be through a highly publicized effort from a museum or zoological park, as during the 19th and early 20th century, or will it be due to some folks with military and law enforcement backgrounds from north Georgia? Does someone have a body already? What are we to make of this breaking news, tied to getting expedition subscribers? But maybe in this brave new world, will this be how such a discovery unfolds? The “Bigfoot Trackers” claim they have a [...]
Myakka, Masks, and John Chambers
It all began with a December 22, 2000, letter signed “God Bless. I prefer to remain anonymous,” mailed to the Sarasota (Florida) Sheriff’s Department.
Blogsquatching: Interface and Malfunction
Carl Diehl’s Metaphortean Space nicely adds a shiny chrome, intellectually-friendly frame around his insights into “blogsquatching”: An interface is typically designed to make the new domain easier for a “user” to comprehend. When this remediation works, the user is fairly oblivious to the crossing-over that is going on. On the contrary, malfunction typically calls attention to the collision of worlds, maintaining itself as burden on presumed purposes. This sort of dissonance might seem to complicate the credibility of such a thing as “the interface of malfunction.” If there is hesitation…so be it. An experiential and interpretative encounter with this mechanism [...]
Monster Quest II
It is Tuesday, May 27, 2008, and the History Channel, on behalf of “Monster Quest II,” is here in Portland, Maine, with a film producer and crew today to digitally film interviews with me about cryptozoology, in the context of a five hour tour of the International Cryptozoology Museum. Their snippets of the interviews, b-roll, and various background commentary on artifacts at the ICM will be used as web-linked support for Season Two of “Monster Quest,” which premieres tomorrow, Wednesday, May 28, 2008. Here are two trailers about the new season. Enjoy: MonsterQuest : Mutant Canines Airs on Wednesday May [...]
New Myakka “Ape” Video
This video has turned up on YouTube with this message: Myakka, Florida – encounter occurred 5/2/08. What do you make of it? The following images are tied to a December 22, 2000, letter signed “God Bless. I prefer to remain anonymous,” mailed to the Sarasota (Florida) Sheriff’s Department. Two photographs were enclosed. They have been animated to demonstrate the changes visible between the photographs. There is even less information about the individual who posted this new YouTube footage than was forthcoming for the 2001 Myakka pictures. Photographs and Enhancements of the Myakka Photographs are © David Barkasy and Loren Coleman [...]
