Over the last two days, I’ve been getting inquiries about the identification of two objects in some recent photographs. One supposedly “cryptid” that has been shown to me is this animal (below) being featured in the Russian media. Said to be a “Prehistoric Fish,” it reportedly was “found in Russia, during construction near an underground river in Chelyabinsk city. The workers killed it and these are the remains.” Apparently, someone is having a little fun with pictures and sizing. This animal is actually a small species, the Triops (notostracans), the so-called tadpole shrimp or shield shrimp. While an aggressive predator, [...]
CZ Museum’s Deco Logo For The 21st Century
The International Cryptozoology Museum (ICM) continues its evolving development, and today announces the launch of its new logo. Designed by award-winning branding and marketing designer Duncan Hopkins of iTaggit, who has a subspeciality in cryptozoology work, this logo becomes the icon of the ICM. The design proudly displays as its centerpiece a symbolic representation of the first coelacanth discovered in 1938. The story of the coelacanth, a fish ethnoknown to the locals as the gombessa or mame, ranks as one of the “darlings of cryptozoology,” along with other discovered species such as the okapi, the giant squid, the mountain gorilla, [...]
Land of CZ Logos
Cryptozoology has inspired some dynamic, colorful and intriguing logos for organizations, publications, and expeditions. Concurrently today, I will share and launch the new Duncan Hopkins-designed logo for the International Cryptozoology Museum. But before that event, I wanted to give a tip of my fedora to the legacy of logos that exist in the field of cryptozoology and the species or cryptids tied to those symbols. At the top of the page is the okapi used as the International Society of Cryptozoology’s official logo on their journal Cryptozoology, as well as the ISC Newsletter. The ISC was founded in 1982, and [...]
Monster Quest: Meldrum Comments
Jeff Meldrum, Ph. D., Idaho State University, emailed me late last night. He shares his insights regarding the “Sasquatch Attack” episode of the History Channel’s recently broadcast “Monster Quest” program. Below are his unedited remarks, given for clarification, from the point of view of someone who was there: Loren ~ I’m running a couple days behind this week. 1. Bear in mind that the result is based on a mere 300 nucleotide sequence. This is extremely small data set. Results based on that short a sequence would never get published for any study, let alone one as controversial as this. [...]
When Oliver Was Bigfoot
Oliver is not a Sasquatch, but you might not have known that in the 1970s. Articles about Oliver being a Bigfoot were written in all seriousness. But Oliver is a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes). Unfortunately, despite his history being easily obtainable, I still get inquiries about Oliver really being a Bigfoot. Supposedly, there is a government conspiracy to keep Oliver hidden away in Texas and the “truth” about his Sasquatch affinities hidden from all of you. Hogwash! Sometimes a mishandled chimp merely grows up to be a dysfunctional but recovering chimp. Sometimes a mangy bear is only a mangy bear.
Monster Quest’s Doug Hajicek Comments
Dear Loren, I can assure you and your readers that fear did play a part of our decision to not be all running around in the woods at night. As you know also, just walking in this kind of terrain at night is dangerous. Being hit in the head with a heavy rock in the middle of nowhere was a big safety concern for me and everybody on my crew. I doubt this thing would of confronted us anyhow as the rock throwing is most likely a safe way to try to intimidate us from a distance (and it worked). [...]
International Cryptozoology Museum Video
Can Cryptomundians help me? I’m attempting to locate online video clips of any appearances of the International Cryptozoology Museum (ICM) on documentary programs. I’ve only found one. The following YouTube footage was taken at the ICM in 2005, by Lone Wolf Productions. The clip is from the History Channel’s “Deep Sea Detectives” segment on the Loch Ness Monster. (Please ignore where I misspoke in the doc – six miles, not one – as this post is only about obtaining the ICM footage.) Can any of you point to YouTube or other online video postings that have snippets of the museum, [...]
The Flatwoods Monster Decoded
The date was September 12, 1952. The place, Flatwoods, West Virginia. On that crisp fall day, Kathleen May (pictured), Eugene Lemon, 17, Neal Nunley, 14, Eddie May, 13, Teddie May, 14, Ronald Shaver, 10, Teddie Neal, 10, Tommy Hyer, 10, and Lemon’s big old dog, climbed to the top of a hill and saw a “monster.” They immediately felt they had to run, as fast as they could, someplace. The huge dark figure with glowing eyes and a head “like the ace of spades” blocked their path. About 12 feet high (4 meters), the figure had a reddish face and [...]
Cryptid: Code Beyond Cryptozoology
The Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts held their Twenty-First Annual Conference in Portland, Maine, on November 1-4, 2007. It was called SLSA ’07: CODE. The conference was intellectually stimulating and extremely academic. One paper read told of ground-breaking implications for cryptozoology, as the term “cryptid” explodes beyond the boundaries of our field. But more of that later. Professor Susan McHugh, from her university website. I was humbled to be an invited guest of one of the conference organizers, the University of New England’s Susan McHugh, the author of Dog (Reaktion, 2004). McHugh is someone well aware of cryptozoology [...]
Jacobs Mischief Continues
It is the 4th of November, and yet it is literally almost two weeks since the beginning of the “Jacobs creature” melodrama. Despite the repeating of this story endlessly by the media, there are new stories being written this Sunday about it as if it is news. This media flap beats to the drum of a different kind of absurdity. There are people – thanks to news stories such as on CNN News today – that are hearing about and seeing a Rick Jacobs photo for the first time, described as a “juvenile sasquatch.” At least one image (see above [...]
