The Boston Globe Rare gray wolf, thought extinct in area, appears in western Mass. By Stephanie Reitz Associated Press Writer / March 4, 2008 SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—When more than a dozen lambs and sheep were slaughtered on a Shelburne farm last fall, wildlife officials suspected either a wolf that had escaped from captivity or a rogue mutt on a hungry rampage. But after the culprit animal was killed and examined, they found themselves with a bigger mystery: How did a wild eastern gray wolf, an endangered species absent from the state for more than a century, find its way to western [...]
New Giant Fossil Bat
Reconstruction of Witwatia schlosseri, a new species of very large bat from the Fayum district of Egypt. (Credit: Drawing by Bonnie Miljour) In a recent issue of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, scientists report on the discovery of six new bat species dating to around 35 million years ago, which sheds new light on the early evolution of bats. It took over 25 years of fieldwork to collect the 33 specimens that form the basis of the new study. “That translates to a little over one specimen per year – a lot of effort for a single fossil,” said Erik [...]
Loren: On the Road Again
March does not bring Spring easily and without a fight to the state of Maine. It calls forth my wanderlust, as talks pop up and investigative traveling for me to the South is on the horizon. Trips call me away from the 100-plus-inches worth of snow in Portland, and out of the cobwebs of February. In two newspapers in the state today, separate articles have been published of my forthcoming talks and treks. The Maine Sunday Telegram contains a good interview in conjunction with my Wednesday noontime, March 5th appearance at the Portland Public Library. It also gives a hint [...]
More New Salamander Info
Two new pinky-sized salamander species and one the size of a fingernail have been discovered crawling around in a remote Costa Rican forest. The new species, found by botanist Alex Munro of the Natural History Museum, London, and colleagues while on expedition, are among 5,300 plants, insects and amphibians recorded during three explorations of La Amistad National Park on the Costa Rica–Panama border. La Amistad is the biggest forest reserve in Central America, yet it remains one of the least explored places in the continent. These new discoveries, announced today, increase the number of salamander species in Costa Rica from [...]

New Frog Species Discovered in USA!
Finding a new species is always exciting. Making a discovery in the USA is downright remarkable. But it’s been done, and the new frog shown above, the Cajun chorus frog (Pseudacris fouquettei) can be added to the amphibian hall of fame. This one was found in Ripley County, Missouri. Writing in the Kansas City Star reporter Bill Graham details the discovery in his article, “Researchers with KU ties identify a new type of frog”. Joseph T. Collins, a retired KU herpetologist who, with three proteges, wrote a paper about the frogs. “The pinnacle in science is discovery,” said Collins, 68, [...]

Two New Wobbegongs Discovered
Known as carpet sharks to most of the rest of the world, two new species of wobbegongs, as they are called in Oz, have been found in Western Australian waters. WA Department of Fisheries shark researcher Justin Chidlow said there were now eight known wobbegong shark species in Australia. The new floral banded wobbegong has been spotted between Geraldton and Augusta and the new dwarf spotted wobbegong was found in shark fishery catches between Green Head and Mandurah, Mr Chidlow said. Wobbegongs, which are often sold in fish shops under the name of carpet shark, are probably the most common [...]
