On Friday, October 26, 2007, and the day before, the West Virginia Metro News, a radio service out of Charleston, broadcast followups to the recent reports of a “full-grown, male African lion.” Here are their two news items: Trout, W. Va. – Jim Shortridge has been hunting his entire life and says he knows what he saw. “A lot of people doesn’t believe it, but it doesn’t [...]
Kentucky’s White Vampire
October 7 – An unknown animal is killing the dogs near Danville, Ky., by cutting a hole in the throat and sucking the blood out of the body. It is said to be an immense white animal, unlike anything ever before seen. It is of the greyhound pattern, but larger in every way, being about four feet high and six long.A Ferocious Beast, Waterloo [Iowa] Courier, October 7, 1891. Thanks for this historical item from Jerome Clark.
Halloween Premiere: Monsterquest
During the year, the crew from this show came to Maine, Texas, and a lot of other places across North America. Don’t be surprised if you see some familiar faces in this series, including people you know in the first mini-documentary ever about an all-women Bigfoot expedition. Monsterquest, which debuts this fall, will take a scientific look at “creature” sightings around the world. History announced its 13-episode order for Monsterquest. There will be episodes on “monsters” such as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, Swamp Beast and the Creature of Snellgrove Lake. The series — described as one part history, one [...]
Maned Lion Prowls West Virginia
Reports of mystery cats appearing to be maned, looking like “African lions,” constitute an entire chapter in Mysterious America and much of my attention down through the years. The sightings are infrequent, but when they occcur they tend to be dramatic and clear. Historically, they go back further than the “circus train” wreck explanation is able to deal with them, and you will see today, continue to modern times. Big Roaring Creek, West Virginia – The king of the jungle just might be playing king of the mountain in a remote area of Greenbrier County. While bow hunting last Wednesday [...]
New “Lion” Sighting in Tennessee
Adult female lion at Big Cat Rescue in Florida. I have just been contacted by an eyewitness, DJCB, regarding a new mystery cat sighting. On Friday, October 19, 2007, the witness saw a “female lion” on the shoulder of the northbound side of I-65 approximately .5 miles north of exit 98 (10 miles north of Nashville, Tennessee). As DJCB drove south, the large cat stood watching cars zoom by on the highway. The eyewitness described what happened next: I debated on whether or not to call local authorities. Three hours later, I called the TN Wildlife office. As expected, the [...]
Should Cryptozoology Throw Out “Hangers-Ons”?
Sometimes challenges need to be confronted head-on. I want to address a call from a blogger who says that cryptozoology is a credible discipline needing to “rid itself of the hangers-on” especially visible at other rival cryptozoology sites. A woman on top of her own self-named “Llewtrah’s Soapbox”, in a blog entitled “Fox With Mange,” has this to say about our favorite subject (cryptozoology, please note, not mange) today, Monday, October 15: Cryptozoology is the study of “hidden” or “unproven” animals – ones not yet scientifically recognised. The plus side is that new species being discovered, or rather animals long [...]
First in Decades: South China Tiger Sighting
I’ve been away for parts of three days. Time to play a little catch up. This following report is interesting as this felid subspecies (Panthera tigris amoyensis) may not be extinct. (File photo of the South China Tiger.) Beijung — A type of tiger thought to be extinct in the wild for more than two decades has been photographed in a mountainous area in northwest China, state media reported Saturday. The endangered subspecies known as the South China tiger was spotted by a farmer on Oct. 3, the China Daily said. Experts confirmed that it was a young wild South [...]
A Man and His (Weird) Museum
The Lewiston Sun Journal came for a visit to my museum. Here’s the way reporter Kathryn Skelton experienced it. And me. Weird, Wicked Weird A man and his (weird) museum Hair from Sir Edmund Hillary’s Yeti expedition, water from Loch Ness, a 9-foot latex pterodactyl, Loren Coleman’s got it all. Sometime next spring, Loren Coleman’s getting a 12-foot-long replica of Canada’s Ogopogo lake monster. It’ll probably have to stay on the porch, near his 8.5-foot-tall, oxen-haired Bigfoot. Coleman is a little pressed for space indoors. There’s already a 9-foot latex pterodactyl camouflaged by an avocado tree and a cabinet of [...]
In Pursuit of Cryptozoology
You have many choices of events to attend during the last quarter of 2007. Here are some visual reminders of the upcoming end of the year Cryptozoology conferences: Saturday, December 1, 2007, “Introduction to Cryptozoology,” Mythic Creatures, American Museum of Natural History, New York City, New York. The AMNH model of Gigantopithecus is part of the “Mythic Creatures” exhibition. These conferences and other recent gatherings have produced some rather elaborate and intriguing forms of promotional art, demonstrating a new love of monsters, creatures, and cryptids on posters. Perhaps we are entering a new era of creative imagery in cryptozoological art [...]
