Cryptomundo reader Chris Noel, who enjoys pointing out typos posted on the blog that need corrections, has put together a travel commercial for the BFRO expeditions. The short video, with no title or words on screen, is simply explained as “Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization–Public Expeditions. www.bfro.net” at the YouTube site. You can view it below. But why just passively watch it? Why not dissect it? I was wondering, how might a seasoned old professor of documentary film introduce this footage to his students, before showing it to them for a critical deconstruction? Perhaps it would go something like this: Now [...]
Fur Associated With Mystery Cat Found
The news being discussed in papers in Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts yesterday and today is of another recent event involving a possible “mountain lion” in central Maine. On the 4th of July, the Blethen Maine News Service (named after the owners of the Seattle Times who purchased the Portland Press Herald and other related Maine newspapers a few years ago) put out a story about the turning over on July 3rd of possible “big cat” DNA samples from Oakland, Maine. The site of the finds, Oakland, Maine, is 12 miles from Sidney, Maine, where the Mystery Cat photograph (above) was [...]
Skeptic Barry Beyerstein, 60, Dies Suddenly
Barry Lane Beyerstein, a skeptic extraordinairé, was born on May 19, 1947, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In recent years, he called Moody Lake, British Columbia, his home. On Monday, June 25, 2007, one day after the 60th birthday of the beginning of the era of flying saucers just across the border in Washington State, Barry L. Beyerstein, 60, was found dead at his college office desk from a heart attack. Beyerstein, a psychology professor at Simon Frasier University, British Columbia, had become a famous media commentator on several topics from drug and alcohol addiction to social beliefs linked to parapsychology, [...]
Bigfoot & Moneymaker on Fox Video
Fox News has a thing about Bigfoot. The sensationalizing news organization’s producers are drawn to the subject and repulsed by it. It is as if after they have made a programming decision to embrace the topic, they find themselves in a nightmare and turn on the concept they have created. Fox News staff are enchanted by Bigfoot, but then send out waves of ridicule onto the subject, as often as possible. If I seem a little bitter at Fox, perhaps I am a bit. Every emotional feeling has a history. Here’s mine. In 2005, if you will recall, I was [...]
Out Of The Ordinary: Weird Virginia
In celebration and dedicated to my birthstate (Norfolk, Virginia: July 12, 1947; yep, my father was in the U. S. Navy)….here’s a June 29, 2007 review of Weird Virginia, a new book by Jeff Bahr, Troy Taylor and Loren Coleman. Weird Virginia As some have told me, I did come in with the era of modern “flying saucers,” as well as with a wave of Sasquatch, Bigfoot and Skunk Ape sightings in British Columbia, Missouri, and Florida, during 1947. Cards, greetings, and 60th birthday checks gratefully accepted at PO Box 360, Portland, ME 04112. Also appearing in my 60th year, [...]
Breaking: New Mystery Cat Photo
Lewiston, Maine’s Sun Journal’s morning edition for Friday, June 29th, will be breaking the story of a new sighting and photograph of the following Mystery Cat. Click on image for full size version This new photograph was taken near Sidney, Maine, in the central part of the state. Game wardens feel it shows proof of a mountain lion. Others at the newspaper are expressing some skepticism. The cat photograph is clearly not a domestic cat, and does show the typical nose pattern, chest white hair, and overall structure of a mountain lion (puma, cougar, painter, panther, and other names). This [...]
Destination Truth: Johor Bigfoot
Bigfooter Allen Foster takes a peek at the latest episode about reports of hairy hominoids in Malaysia on Destination Truth: The “team” went to Malaysia to find Bigfoot. The leader, Josh Gates, interviewed the Malaysia’s leading Bigfoot researcher, Vincent Chow. Then they went to a local town near the last reported sighting and interviewed witnesses. Off into the jungle they went to where the latest sighting was. The team found a possible footprint and made a cast of it. The footprint was irregular in shape but did look like a possible print. They had one of their night vision cameras [...]
The AP & Dr. Hawks Respond
In the wake of “Krantz Is Dead: Comment to Anthropologist Hawks,” a couple updates are worthy of passing along. The Associated Press dispatches on the Michigan search for Bigfoot, being published since yesterday afternoon, have been revised to note that Krantz is no longer living. The media mentions the “late Grover Krantz, a Washington State University professor who specialized in cryptozoology, the study of creatures that have not been proven to exist…” Wikipedia’s definition of “Cryptozoology,” which is fully available to the AP, has a more developed examination of the word. Saying Krantz “specialized” in cryptozoology is overstating the realities. [...]
Loren & Loch Ness on Video
Someone has uploaded parts of the History Channel’s recent repeat of an episode of “Deep Sea Detectives” featuring great archival footage of recent cryptozoological discoveries, the program’s hosts diving at Loch Ness, and yours truly in my home-research office-museum. Corrective footnote: Yes, I know that Loch Ness is six miles from the ocean, although I misspoke during one of the tapings, and too quickly said “mile” instead of “a few miles.” I do get excited in these interviews to try to share my down-to-earth passion for the topic. For more on this subject see: The Field Guide to Lake Monsters, [...]
