The date of April 24th is upon us. Celebrate with me the release of my book today! I’m over at Lake Champlain, hunting Champ animals with a Nippon TV crew, but I’ve left this message to be posted here. I’ll mention again how much help you can be to my book and, yes, so many other authors trying to convince publishers this is a cool subject, by buying the 2007 edition of Mysterious America: The Ultimate Guide to the Nation’s Weirdest Wonders, Strangest Spots, and Creepiest Creatures on April 24th! Why should we let only, for example, the diet books, [...]
1977: Year Of The Creature
After I posted this morning’s blog “Flashback: Thirty Year Ago – South Dakota Bigfoot,”” about a Bigfoot flap taking place in 1977, Scott Maruna at The Anomalist commented: “Come to think of it, there were a lot of flaps going on that year.” Indeed, there were. The anniversary of the Dover Demon sightings (April 21-22, 1977) is rapidly approaching. On April 21, 2007, I’ll be a guest on the “Dover Demon” 30th Anniversary Special (“Dover Demon” is a chapter in Mysterious America), from 10 pm to Midnight, on the Eastern Spooky Southeast broadcast, on WBSM-AM, 1420 AM, New Bedford, Massachusetts. [...]
What’s Your CZ IQ?
Can you identify this mystery fish found on an old postcard? (Click on this image shared by Phyllis Mancz to see full size version.) I know, I know. The above photo is still a mystery, but how about some easier questions? What’s your Cryptozoology IQ? Okay, a couple questions are about aliens, but, overall, this is a good quick automated quiz to see how you rate. Take the short quiz on the FunTrivia.com site here. How did you do? (BTW, I will delete your comment if you give away any answers. That is just no fun for anyone else coming [...]
Meldrum Tapdances
In the current issue of TAPS Paramagazine on newsstands now and via mail (you can click on the ad to the right), you will find a new “Q and A” session with Dr. Jeff Meldrum about Bigfoot. Yes, I have the cover article on Sea Serpents plus a list-column on New England Lake Monsters, but what I wanted to really mention was the Meldrum article. I only learned about it after my issue came recently. Meldrum, of course, doesn’t “tapdance” in the traditional negative meaning, i.e. that he is avoiding topics. He dances about in fine form, as in cutting-a-rug [...]
Cryptomundo’s Ultimate CZ FAQs
(Click on image to see full size version, enhanced by shockbeton) Fans, friends, and readers of Cryptomundo, I have an idea that it might be good to have a permanent “Cryptomundo’s Frequently Asked Questions” location attached to the Cryptomundo site. Perhaps it would be via a long blog of answers, or series of blogs. Maybe it would be a hyperlinked sidebar dedicated location. I see this as a gift in return to all those who have done so much to keep my blogging alive here. Let me see if this will work. The details will be ironed out. But the [...]
Big Birds Or Not?
Let me try this again. Yesterday, I too hastily said some things about Ken Gerhard’s new book without having the time to fully develop what I meant. I removed that blog, and then later saw that cryptozoologist Chad Arment disagreed with me, a bit, that’s fine, about our different world views of cryptozoology. Chad also took the opportunity to use my vanished blog to have at me. I actually think that is great, as I need to be pulled in sometimes, especially when a book puts me in a bad mood and I go too global. I did not mean [...]
1901 Cryptozoology
Cryptozoology historian Brian Gaugler writes: I recently found an old article in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle archives from 1901 that I thought you might find interesting. Assuming that it’s not a newspaper hoax, it discusses the shooting of a living dinosaur in Florida and the work of a secret group of scientists to gather cryptozoological evidence. Brian Gaugler Check out Brian’s blog, here. Following is part of the article he has reproduced there.
Bigfoot Fan Dies In Iraq
On February 8, 2007, the war in Iraq took someone who had lived a life that pursued passions in Bigfoot, dinosaurs, and “the unbelievable,” as one friend recalled. Ross “Rocco” Clevenger (pictured above), 21, of Marsing, Idaho, was a U.S. Army Reserve sergeant, who died with two other Idaho buddies when a roadside bomb hit their armored vehicle in Iraq. Today, Clevenger’s funeral will be held in the Idaho gym of the high school he attended. In his friends’ remembrances, it is clear Clevenger shared many interests of all of us here. Here’s some of those recollections: It’s hard to [...]
Civil War Dinos
Finally, photographic proof positive of Civil War soldiers with a Triceratops? Today on the Worth1000 photoshopping contest: photos of impossible things that appear to have been taken a long, long time ago. Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing For the link, go here. Now, within our CryptoZoo world here at Cryptomundo, similar photographs have turned up, some showing photoshopping and some not. Take for instance, what are we to make of the above picture of soldiers wearing Civil War (or War Between the States) uniforms while an apparent pterodactyl is at their feet? Verdict: photoshopping. Meanwhile, the following photo is not done [...]
A Life Explored In Words
I sometimes neglect the fact that few people know really what I have written, in total. Today, for example, a young man emailed me with this message: “How many books have you done Loren? I have only come across two.” Well, I can forget myself, often, for many reasons. It happens. Ha ha. Memory and lists of things-to-do aside, one reason is that there are many ways to count the unfolding of my life that occurs via my modest library of written works. You can look at “how many” in terms of various editions, revisions, and reprints. Or you can [...]
