First the old 1970s theory that all the Nessies are swimming elephants was retold in new clothing in March 2006, and now we are hearing that the Scottish Lake Monsters cannot be plesiosaurs. Okay, tell me something I don’t know, please! What is it? See below. The news out of Scotland, as for example in the Scotsman article, “Scientist pours cold water on Loch Ness dinosaur theory”, is propelling the finding that Nessie is not a plesiosaur, which really is not a dinosaur anyway (but that’s another story). Here’s part of what the “breaking news” services you will read today [...]
Pondering OOP Dolphins and Manatees
What is to be made of the recent reports of river-dwelling manatees and now a dolphin? Have some of these known species been misidentified as cryptids in the past? Well, yes, they probably have been. First, let me share a mention of the newest account. Reporter Elizabeth Ratto of the Boston Globe writes that a “common dolphin” was sighted on Friday, October 27, 2006: …swimming in the Fore River, just outside the Braintree Yacht Club, until it exited Boston Harbor with high tide around 3 p.m., according to Tony LaCasse, spokesman for the New England Aquarium. The aquarium was alerted [...]
Loren Coleman’s Top Cryptids
Halloween 2006 seems as good a time as any to publish a response to several requests I have received lately for my top ten picks in cryptids, those animals that serve as the focus of cryptozoologists. Of course, thinking outside the lines, as I always do, I had to choose thirteen. Also, I had to create two parallel lists. One is for those supported by what I see as the most credible evidence, in my opinion only. For the other group, I see this one as viewed through the public’s eye, those most popular cryptids, monsters, crypto-creatures, or whatever the [...]
Rarer Than Thylacines
Only 30 exist in Maine and they won’t become visible for sightings until October 7, 2006. Overall, only 200 are known to be around, and some of those already have vanished into private hands. They are almost extinct, although just discovered, and the entire group will disappear soon, mostly into private collections. What in the world could I be talking about? Would you believe one of the rarest of rare books to be published on cryptozoology, the volume that contains the exhibition catalogue and essays from the Bates College program? If you are interested in having me pick up a [...]
Sabine River Monster Photo
Coast to Coast AM’s website has posted the following image of an unknown creature swimming on its back, as seen in the Sabine River, near where it empties into the Gulf of Mexico. The Sabine River forms the border between Texas and Louisiana near the reported point of this picture/sighting. Most of the area around this location would be bayou country, but nevertheless freshwater. The Sabine River is known for its large freshwater catfish, but this animal does not appear to be even remotely similar to a catfish. Cryptozoologists Will Always Have Paris
Dr. Marie-Jeanne Koffmann During a forthcoming conference in Paris on October 14, 2006, cryptozoologists and hominologists will meet and discuss items of cryptozoological interest. (The French language overview of the meeting can be found below the Richard Klyver illustration of the Almas.) At the gathering, zoologist François de Sarre will discuss unknown hairy hominoids. Michel Meurger, who wrote a book about his sociological thoughts on lake monsters, will also be speaking on other matters. Michel Raynal, Jean Roche, and Jean-Luc Rivera, all well-known French cryptozoologists, shall be attending apparently, as well. Dr. Marie-Jeanne Koffmann, one of the world’s top researchers [...]
New Champ Sighting
Lake Champlain Monster researcher Sean Clogston is reporting the following new sighting of Champ from eyewitness Scott Joy: I would like to report a sighting I had on the September 7, (9-9:30 am) [2006]. I was riding the ferry between Plattsburgh, New York, and Vermont. As we were crossing I was sitting in my truck (I’m an OTR* truckdriver ). I was looking toward the north end of the lake when I noticed what I thought was a wave or wake from a boat, approx 2ft high at the peak and maybe 6-8ft long. I thought that it was strange [...]
Memphré Threatened By Canadians
Quebec’s and Vermont’s shared Lake Memphremagog monsters, Memphré, are being challenged by the removal of conservation lands and expansion of landfills, from the Canadian side. Where is Jacques Boisvert when we need him? Memphré monster hunter, scuba diver, historian, and ecologist Jacques Boisvert’s sudden death on February 4, 2006, at age 73, was untimely, and it now has become obvious his work lives on in the challenges that face his favorite cryptid. (See Boisvert’s Cryptomundo obituary here.) According to the September 2006 issue of the Magog, Quebec newspaper The Outlet, the Memphremagog Conservation Association (MCA) has raised grave concern over [...]
