El Reno’s Dermals

Click on image for full-size version Dr. Grover Krantz did not bring to the attention of hominology the possible importance of dermal ridges found in unknown hominoid footprint casts until 1982. Could there be a photographic record of dermals from a dozen years before then? "Handprints" resembling those of a gorilla-like man or man-like gorilla are part of the question of unknown anthropoid cryptids in the southern United States. Near El Reno, Oklahoma, in December 1970, something which moved on all fours raided a chicken coop, leaving a handprint on the door. Local media called it the "El Reno Chicken [...]

New Zealand’s Waitoreke

Could the Waitoreke be related to the Oriental small-clawed otter (Amblonyx cinereus)? Next to the giant moa reports, the most discussed mystery animal of New Zealand is the waitoreke. Maoris and early colonists on the nation’s South Island frequently reported a small otterlike animal known as the kaureke and also as the waitoreke. Late nineteenth-century writers on New Zealand’s natural landscape tried to fit the sightings into some logical framework, notwithstanding the reality that no otters, beavers, or other European animals then existed in that country. Around 1855 the Rev. Richard Taylor interviewed a man who claimed repeated observations of [...]

New Johor Bigfoot Track

For months, since November 2005, reports of the Johor Bigfoot issued from the rainforests of Malaysia. Cryptomundo even created a sorting category for them (see to the right of this column). Weekly updates and discussions ensued. Debates about the evidence raged. And then the horrible discovery was made that the “photographs” that supposedly existed were nothing more than extractions from a book about a television documentary on prehumans. But here we are, back in another November, and there’s news from Johor and new findings of footprints. The shape of the footprint, it must be admitted does look interesting, but as [...]

Topanga’s “Condor”

What if this story is about a large flying cryptid? This youngster did a better job than many adults do when they see something large and unknown, flying off into the sunset. Monday, Nov 06, 2006 Small fry captures rare glimpse of straying big bird By Bob Pool Los Angeles Times Gabriel Gottfried, 5, shows the digital photo he took of a condor launching from a pine tree near his Los Angeles home. LOS ANGELES – Like any good bird-lover, Gabriel Gottfried knew what to do when he spied the huge creature perched on a tree branch outside his Topanga [...]

Dolphin With “Remains of Back Legs”

Not cryptozoological, but considering what’s been discussed today, it seemed worth sharing: Japanese researchers said Sunday [November 4, 2006] a bottlenose dolphin captured last month has an extra set of fins that could be the remains of back legs, providing further evidence ocean-dwelling mammals once lived on land. Fishermen captured the four-finned dolphin off the coast of Wakayama prefecture in western Japan on Oct. 28 and alerted the nearby Taiji Whaling Museum, said museum director Katsuki Hayashi. Fossil remains show dolphins and whales were four-footed land animals about 50 million years ago and share the same common ancestor as hippos [...]

New Mystery Loch Ness Photo

Compare the two photographs taken on the underwater cam within Scotland’s Loch Ness. It is clear that in one the surface of the bottom shows a permanent group of objects to the right and nothing to the left. In the other, a cam image capture, you can see a long object on the bottom, on the left. The difference in time was within minutes, so the object was definitely animate. What is it? An eel? A salmon on the bottom? One of Adrian Shine’s lost sturgeons? A baby Nessie? The tentacle of a giant squid? A seal? An ad man [...]
