Mokele-mbembe being killed by Pygmies; drawn by Bill Rebsamen and used with permission. Who are today’s and tomorrow’s African American cryptozoologists? When I was at the 5th Annual Texas Bigfoot Conference, held October 14-16, 2005, I found it was a good event. I discovered the gathering was attended by a wider diversity of people than I have seen in my three decades of presenting at Fortean, cryptozoological, and Bigfoot gatherings. Of the 500 people there, I noticed more families, more women, more Hispanics, and more Native peoples than at any other public Bigfoot meeting, conference, and presentation I’ve personally experienced. Delphos Hyena
The following report recalls the historical stories of the Shunka Warak’in of Montana, as represented in the now missing taxidermy example above. Delphos, O., July 31. – Considerable excitement was created here yesterday when Isaac Good, who lives on the Noah Miller farm in Marion township, about a mile east of Delphos, came into town and reported that he had seen in the Pohlman woods, near the W. C. Baxter farm, between 8 and 9 a.m., a strange looking wild animal that had all the appearance of being a hyena. Mr. Good first saw the animal in the woods. It [...]
Circus Train Wreck Myth

Cecil B. DeMille’s The Greatest Show on Earth, released in 1952, influenced many future explanations of Midwestern “varmint” sightings in the 1950s – through the Present.

Ratatosk Predicts Red Sox Victory
I’ve spent some time here discussing melanistic or black squirrels. It seems only logical, perhaps even nuts, to not ignore the significant publishing of an article in today’s New York Times regarding some squirrel lore that can be seen to unfold in the coming weeks. What is being set up is a testable experiment. If a scholar of Norse mythology had been in the stands of Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, he or she probably would have advised Yankees fans to not make too much out of the 5-3 victory against the Red Sox. The result, after all, still left [...]
Steve Irwin’s Thylacine Hunt
Sadly, the world lost the Crocodile Hunter almost a year ago. The anniversary is approaching quickly. Feelings are still stirred by how Steve Irwin (February 22, 1962 – September 4, 2006) died and that he left the Earth too quickly. Intriguingly, here we are again talking about Steve and one of his quests that overlapped with cryptozoology. On Thursday, August 30, 2007, at 6:00 pm ET/PT, at least in the USA, on the Animal Planet, the long-lost episode with a segment on Steve Irwin’s mini-hunt for the Thylacine will be broadcast. This occurs during his 60 minutes program, “The Crocodile [...]
“Extinct” Dolphin Sighted
An extensive survey in 2006 failed to find any sign of the baiji The critically endangered Yangtze River dolphin, or baiji, has been sighted in eastern China, Chinese media report. Scientists had recently declared that the baiji was probably extinct. An international team of researchers spent six weeks looking for the creature last year without a single sighting. But earlier this month the baiji was spotted and filmed by a local man, and confirmed by Chinese biologists, says official Xinhua news agency. “I never saw such a big thing in the water before so I filmed it,” Zeng Yujiang from [...]
Search for Malabar Civet
The Malabar civet (Viverra civettina) was last seen half a century ago in the forests of Kerela, India, and is presumed to be extinct. There is not even a photograph in existence. Hopes were raised in 1991, when a fresh skin was found. A Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) project is now looking for this elusive animal in its historically known areas of distribution in hope that a few are still lurking in the undergrowth waiting to be found. Siddharth Rao, an Assistant Field Officer on the project recounts several months spent deep in the jungles of the Western Ghats [...]
Melanistic Bobcat Caught
Readers of Cryptomundo are aware of the discussions of black bobcats in a specific area of Florida, and of how these reports have tracked down through the years, along with more recent appearances of melanistic felines. Breaking news is coming to me from Mark Fraser of Big Cats in Britian (www.bigcatsinbritain.org) confirming the sightings. Mark passes along the following August 27, 2007 Florida report from a nuisance wildlife trapper: I am a state licensed nuisance wildlife trapper located in southern Florida. I thought you might be interested in this. On Wednesday night I was contacted by a very excited/scared land [...]
Boy Attacked by Strange Animal
Tipton, Ind., August 26. – His faithful dog was all that prevented Frank Tomlinson, 11-year-old son of Harmon Tomlinson, residing southeast of Tipton on the Rolla L. Hobbs farm, from being torn to pieces by a strange wild animal which attacked the lad when he was driving the cows from pasture to the house for milking Monday evening [August 25]. The boy is suffering from a broken collar bone and numerous bites and scratches as the result of the attack and his clothes were nearly torn from him in the encounter. The strange animal was described by the boy as [...]
