That Mystery Fish Postcard

The Mystery Fish postcard, first noted here on November 29, 2005, has never been identified, as to exact location or species. New people sometimes have new ideas. (Click on image to see full size version, enhanced by shockbeton) Due to research (see below) on the type of postcard it is, there was a determination, thanks to Cryptomundo readers, that this specific item would have been produced between 1904-18. The location seems to be in the Pacific; perhaps it was taken in the Philippines. Or maybe even Florida? Someone said this might be during WWI, in the south of France, because [...]

Crypto Rescue

Do something good today. Help out a member of our community get back up on his feet! This is not about me. But I empathize. Living the life of a cryptozoologist, on the edge of survival, is not easy and is no joke. I think we all have are own personal stories of struggle. People think I am joking when I talk about money problems, because people have a fantasy that if you are an author or a retired university instructor you’re rich. I’ve experienced it all personally, this life on the edge, and yet make a choice to hold [...]

Animals of Discovery

Intriguingly, the Toronto Star’s Rick Sznajder compiled and published a list on September 26, 2006, of animals, which were thought once extinct and rediscovered in recent years. These species are available in several books, of course, but it’s fun to see someone in the media highlighting these “animals of discovery.” Here’s Sznajder’s list: Northern bald ibis rediscovered in Syria in 2002. Giant Palouse earthworm, last seen in 1987, rediscovered 2006. Found along the Washington-Idaho border. Laotian rock rat, believed extinct for 11 million years, first seen by a western scientist in 2005. Chinese crested tern, thought extinct from 1937 to [...]

New Walking Shark Find by Coelacanth Discoverer

There’s good discovery news out of Indonesia, in various widely reported dispatches, such as by our buddy David Pescovitz over at Boing Boing, in his notes, "Dozens of new undersea species discovered off Indonesia ." Pescovitz writes: Researchers from Conservation International discovered dozens of new species in the water off Indonesia’s Papua province. This epaulette shark (Hemiscyillum freycineti) walks around the bottom of the sea on its fins. From the Associated Press: The team from U.S.-based Conservation International also warned that the area–known as Bird’s Head Seascape–is under danger from fishermen who use dynamite and cyanide to net their catches [...]

Athreya, who found the bird, named it after the Bugun tribe, which lives in the area. The bird has a black [...]

Caution About “New Species” News

Everytime a news items appears about a "new species," of course, it seems it might be another exciting moment for cryptozoology. The new species could be one that is ethnoknown, a part of the traditions and encounters of the local peoples who may have assisted in finding it. But some media reports might not be talking about the discovery of a brand "new species." Sometimes reporters are only disseminating the fact that a "new" animal, perhaps never seen locally, is making a new appearance. Often, if the location has a bit of exotic mystic about it, people naturally think this [...]
