Three images: A documentary film crew finds Yeti tracks in Nepal, December 2007. A monk is beaten in Kathmandu amid protests by Tibetan refugees in Nepal, March 2008. Chinese troops kill Tibetans in the most violent protests in Tibet in 20 years, March 2008. In a region of the world where the Chinese killing of Tibetans has been in the news all week, it seems strange to read the travel article in today’s New York Times. Entitled “As Turmoil Subsides, Tourism in Nepal Surges,” it allegedly heralds the return of visitors to a nation raked by its own bloodshed in [...]
Outing the Ozark Howler
Ten years later, the “Ozark Howler” still haunts the world of cryptozoology, and everyone from adventurous artists to Wikipedia writers continue to get it wrong. Here we go again. A new example has popped up in the modern blogsphere. Artist Robyn Fabsits of Kansas City, Missouri, shares her vision of what two “cryptids” supposedly look like in her new blog entry entitled “Cryptozoology.” She describes her two items this way: The blue guy is Momo or the Missouri monster and the orange guy is the “Ozark Howler.” I’ll tell you more about their stories later. The artist does not tell [...]
No No Gnome
I earlier posted about the “creepy Argentinan gnome video” making the rounds, along with one of the versions of the footage. As the comments there indicate, multiple uploaded videos demonstrate that several takes of the “incident” were made, the images look like a puppet, and other things point to a hoax. Nevertheless, interest is still running high about the visuals. I was interviewed by reporter Alex Davies of Wireless News Flash service yesterday, for the following story they sent out today to their 800 radio stations and other news outlets: ARGENTINIAN GNOME A RED-HATTED HOAXPORTLAND, Maine (Wireless Flash) — Strange [...]
Sadie Hawkins Day Bigfoot
Today is one of the rare events in human time-space history, a catch-up day, February 29th. Happy Sadie Hawkins Day! According to English law, February 29th was ignored and had no legal status. Therefore, it was the one day when women could ask someone to marry them. This practice was first documented in 1288, when Scotland passed a law that allowed women to propose marriage to the man of their choice in that year. They also made it law that any man who declined a proposal in a leap year must pay a fine, such as a kiss to money [...]
Ural Mystery
Mysterious Deaths of 9 Skiers Still Unresolved by Svetlana Osadchuk, The St. Petersburg Times. Nine experienced cross-country skiers hurriedly left their tent on a Urals slope in the middle of the night, casting aside skis, food and their warm coats. Clad in their sleepwear, the young people dashed headlong down a snowy slope toward a thick forest, where they stood no chance of surviving bitter temperatures of around minus 30 degrees Celsius. Baffled investigators said the group died as a result of a compelling unknown force and then abruptly closed the case and filed it as top secret. The [...]
Johor Bigfoot Back?
“A Malaysian Laugh” is a regular column by The Malaysian Insider humorist Jerome Martin. As the newspaper says: “If you don’t find it funny, we are happy to get your feedback so we can pay him less.” Today, they published a new column on how the forthcoming elections in Malaysia look through the eyes of their Johor Bigfoot. I’m not sure if the humor translates well to the Western ear, but nevertheless, here’s what was said, in part, regarding: …the status of Bigfoot in the upcoming elections. Presumably, since they are said to be surviving fragments of a prehistoric ape, [...]
Dark Matters
Life is not all about Yetis, of course. As I have mentioned in the past, I have another blog that deals routinely with my research and consulting on the copycat effect, school shootings, and suicide clusters, often with a sidetrip into twilight language. As you can imagine, I have had to put some time and some words over there lately. I could tell something was on the horizon, and then the Northern Illinois University shootings occurred. For those interested in these topics, I have recently written several essays on the current events: Dates & Dark Matters NIU Blame Game NIU [...]
The Valentine Killer Who Saw Bigfoot
Lots of attention, needless to say, is being given by the media to the Northern Illinois University shootings on Valentine’s Day. I’ve posted my thoughts about that so-called “rampage” and Valentine’s dangers over at my Copycat Effect blog, here, here, here, and here. I felt now might be the time at Cryptomundo to publish an email you’ll find below. I’ve been holding onto until it seemed like an appropriate moment to share it. Insights into the mind of a Bigfoot eyewitness who turned into a killer is sometimes more confusing than one can imagine. The following was sent to me [...]
Galveston Mothman?
In her blog this week, Ha’ri writes in “Mothman – Sighting in Galveston?” of her wonderings and ponderings. She is interested to discover if any large bird-like somethings were seen before any hurricanes hit the coastal Texas city of Galveston. Ha’ri does some research, and rightfully comes to the conclusion there’s nothing to be easily found about a 1969 hurricane – or Mothman sightings there. In the movie The Mothman Prophecies, news articles about the “Houston Batman” were flashed on the screen as the character “Alexander Leek” (“Keel” backwards) talked of how Mothmen were seen before disasters like “the hurricane” [...]
Cryptozoology Futurology
Yes, I have turned up in this new book, What’s Next: The Experts’ Guide: Predictions from 50 of America’s Most Compelling People by Jane Buckingham. I am one of the fifty “most compelling people” in the country. I’m still trying to explain what that means to my sons. I do like the company I get to keep in the pages of this tome, which has just hit the bookstores. What’s Next takes cryptozoology seriously. It contains my next decade’s predictions about where I see the field going and what animals I feel will be discovered. I won’t spoil this author’s [...]
