My gosh, now the media is throwing in Chupacabras to explain the Orangutan-Fox Squirrel-Spider Monkey reports from Baker County, Florida. Also, the Skunk Ape, Bigfoot, and something called the “Taylor Wild Man” are being pitched too. At least, they haven’t caught on to the Cryptomundian theory that it is a tree-stranded otter. Mark Lyons observes the trap set by FWC. Look, up in the tree. It’s a plane, it’s a bird, it’s … well, no one knows for sure exactly what it is. A sighting three weeks ago of what appeared to be a large, orange colored monkey in a [...]

Men in Cryptozoology: Irv Kornfield
While a self-described skeptic, this Maine scientist deserves recognition of the pivotal role he now serves within cryptozoology, during this age of DNA analysis for every physical sample found. Irv Kornfield is one of the good guys, actually. Irv Kornfield has a black, furry nugget that looks like a knuckle from the Turner Beast in his freezer. There’s also a chunk of once-suspected Nova Scotia sea monster in the back. A nationally known DNA expert, Kornfield has run the forensic lab at the University of Maine for all of its 10 years. His usual work is wildlife and poaching cases. [...]
Chupacabras DNA Results Are In
Contributed Photo: Phylis Canion Well, no need to dwell on this one. We all saw this coming, and it appears only a few people and the media thought this was going to be anything different. The DNA results are back from tests run on the “Chupacabras” (as it was called) found by Phylis Canion, near Cuero, Texas, in July, 2007. The biologists at the Texas State University have announced that it is a coyote (Canis latrans). The DNA sequence is a virtually identical match to DNA from the coyote. This is probably the answer a lot of folks thought might [...]
Japan’s Standing Panda & More Video
Did you know that this strange bipedal behavior of a standing red panda has been all the rage in Japan? Here’s a fun video on a diversity of the following noted Fortean and cryptozoological topics, which ends with a suggested solution to the Standing Panda’s appearance. Mothman; Chupacabras; Bigfoot (with a ghost face in the background); Tsuchinoko (crypto-creature famous in Japan); Nessie; Alien with FBI/KGB/Gestapo agents (actually a “Talk of the Times” newspaper hoax); Flatwoods Monster; The Doll with growing hair (another typically Japanese Forteana); Aliens play with cattle mutilations; Crop circles, by drawing Doraemon; A play on a famous [...]
Should Cryptozoology Throw Out “Hangers-Ons”?
Sometimes challenges need to be confronted head-on. I want to address a call from a blogger who says that cryptozoology is a credible discipline needing to “rid itself of the hangers-on” especially visible at other rival cryptozoology sites. A woman on top of her own self-named “Llewtrah’s Soapbox”, in a blog entitled “Fox With Mange,” has this to say about our favorite subject (cryptozoology, please note, not mange) today, Monday, October 15: Cryptozoology is the study of “hidden” or “unproven” animals – ones not yet scientifically recognised. The plus side is that new species being discovered, or rather animals long [...]
In Pursuit of Cryptozoology
You have many choices of events to attend during the last quarter of 2007. Here are some visual reminders of the upcoming end of the year Cryptozoology conferences: Saturday, December 1, 2007, “Introduction to Cryptozoology,” Mythic Creatures, American Museum of Natural History, New York City, New York. The AMNH model of Gigantopithecus is part of the “Mythic Creatures” exhibition. These conferences and other recent gatherings have produced some rather elaborate and intriguing forms of promotional art, demonstrating a new love of monsters, creatures, and cryptids on posters. Perhaps we are entering a new era of creative imagery in cryptozoological art [...]
African Americans, Snallygasters & Mokele-Mbembes
Mokele-mbembe being killed by Pygmies; drawn by Bill Rebsamen and used with permission. Who are today’s and tomorrow’s African American cryptozoologists? When I was at the 5th Annual Texas Bigfoot Conference, held October 14-16, 2005, I found it was a good event. I discovered the gathering was attended by a wider diversity of people than I have seen in my three decades of presenting at Fortean, cryptozoological, and Bigfoot gatherings. Of the 500 people there, I noticed more families, more women, more Hispanics, and more Native peoples than at any other public Bigfoot meeting, conference, and presentation I’ve personally experienced. [...]
Cuero’s Chupacabras Tee-Shirts
Photograph by Sonny Long, Victoria Advocate. A new creature report or series of sightings has turned into a “flap,” this time in Cuero, Texas. A flap is the term (with origins in the Air Force treatment of groups of ufo sightings) where there is a great deal of official and media attention, in this case related to a “monster,” such as happened in Texas during August, and now moving into September. What is part of the popular culture outcome from this out-of-control interest in such a beast? A new cryptid tee-shirt, of course. You’ve seen multiple examples of this recently. [...]
Pondering Cuero’s Chupacabras
Phylis Canion and her dead head are all over the internet and the media today. Is it a Chupacabras? The answer may rest soon in a lab in Maine. Perhaps Ms. Canion will read this or someone in authority in Texas shall – and they will contact me. I was telephoned tonight by Dr. Irv Kornfield, Professor of Biology and Molecular Forensics, at the University of Maine, who was helpful in running the DNA samples on last summer’s “Maine Mutant” carcass. Dr. Kornfield has volunteered to run DNA tests on this new Cuero specimen, and I shall be attempting to [...]
