Saturday, January 12, 2008, the world premiere showing of the new indie film, Monster in the Woods will occur at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, Maine. Built in 1912 to replace two former halls both destroyed by fire, the (Portland, Maine) City Hall Auditorium was a classic example of colonial style, boasting porticos and columns, a deep court and large wings. The hall was completely renovated beginning in January 1996, and today, the re-named Merrill Auditorium is a 1900 seat performing arts facility, located in the remarkable setting of downtown Portland, on the beautiful coast of Maine. The plot of Monster [...]
Yeti At McGill
The Year of the Yeti continues. Amazingly, my last Friday introduction of the classic film The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas and the new hardbound release of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come to Life at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City, is being mirrored (skeptically) with something quite similar occurring tomorrow in Quebec. At McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec, there will be a screening of the same film, preceded by an intriguing lecture. Here’s the announcement from McGill: The Redpath’s ever-popular Freaky Fridays series hits the New Year running, or at least ambling with a [...]
Old Books, Classics, and the Minnesota Iceman
I’m away in New York City, doing Yeti business, of course, including launching the new classics, like Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come to Life (PayPal me at lcoleman@maine.rr.com $25 marked “For ABSM Book” and I’ll send you, postpaid, an autographed copy, a hardback of this new printing to any USA address, for this one-time discount price). See the end about news of another classic to be reprinted. But, anyway, I left something for you to read on Saturday. Before I get into the crop of new cryptozoology books on the horizon for 2008 in a forthcoming post, how about a trip [...]
Year of the Yeti Begins Now!
This Friday will be the official launch of the new publication of the reasonably-priced hardback edition of Ivan T. Sanderson’s classic book, Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come to Life, from Cosimo Classics. This new printing contains a new preface I’ve written, and I will have a few copies, hot off the press, literally, for sale at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City. I also will have copies of two other books I’ve written that contain large sections about the Yeti: Tom Slick: True Life Encounters in Cryptozoology and The Field Guide to Bigfoot and Other Mystery Primates Worldwide [...]

The Top Cryptozoology Books of 2007 by Loren Coleman, Cryptozoology A to Z, Bigfoot!, and Tom Slick It is time for my annual top picks for the best cryptozoology books of 2007, with attention to each book’s individual achievements noted in recognition of its unique niche within the cryptozoological literature for this year. Each year has been different, and 2007 is unique, as well. In 2007, there was a good crop [...]

40th Anniversary of Silver Bridge Collapse
December 15, 2007, is the 40th anniversary of the collapse of the Silver Bridge over the Ohio River. This year has been one of reflection with regard to this event. John A. Keel (above), who has written about Mothman as well as the suicides and deaths associated with it for decades, had his 1975 book turned into its namesake movie, The Mothman Prophecies, in 2002. Following is the clip from that motion picture of the dramatic recreation of the Silver Bridge collapse of December 15, 1967, which has been compared to the I-35W Bridge collapse of August 1st, 2007. In [...]
Christmas Author Quotation
Lauren Daley writes in the Standard-Times on December 9, 2007, of her recent interview with The Polar Express (1985) author Chris Van Allsburg, 58, of Providence, Rhode Island. Daley mentions a good quotation in Van Allsburg’s 1986 Caldecott Medal-winning acceptance for the now classic Christmas book: “A world that might have Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster is clearly superior to one that definitely does not.” Certainly, a world with cryptozoology in it appears to be one that is more hopeful about new animals and species, the human imagination and various possibilities, than one that only reflects some kind of [...]
Snowman Movie, Meditation and Mental Telepathy
I’m returning to New York to talk about Abominable Snowmen, Tom Slick, and telepathy between humans and Yetis. That’s right. I am barely back from the Big Apple, and I’m going back to introduce a favorite movie of mine during another museum’s new opening. I hope meet some of the people that missed my talk at the American Museum of Natural History on December 1st. If you wish, ask me about Yeti mind-reading or the real stories behind the movie that will be screening. Want your copy of Tom Slick autographed or interested in picking up a new one from [...]
60 Minutes’ Morley Safer, AMNH, and Cryptozoology
On Friday, November 30, 2007, I took the train to New York City from Portland, Maine. It is a long ride, but I decided to try it out, catch up on some reading, and see what came my way. I was surprised by the person I ran into on the train: CBS 60 Minutes correspondent Morley Safer. He was the only guy sitting a few seats in front of me on a sparingly occupied train car. I think he got on someplace in Massachusetts. I’m not sure, and I respect his privacy enough to not really care to talk about [...]
