What have they done to the saga of the misunderstood lonely neighborhood hairy forest giant and his cranky mom? Where has the Neandertaloid gone in this tale of a dying, soon-to-be extinct group of humanlike beings? Coming this November, Beowulf is re-invented for the screen beyond the epic remembrances many of us share of this legend. I really doubt the filmmakers have followed my line of thinking that Grendel was a surviving true giant, near Neandertal, or perhaps even a relict form of Homo heildelbergensis. Nevertheless, the film is made in a fashion that makes it appear similar to 300 [...]
Heuvelmans Files
The following images are the first ones I have seen of the inside of “The Department of Cryptozoology B. Heuvelmans, Museum of Zoology, Lausanne, Switzerland.” This location is now the sanctuary for Bernard Heuvelmans’ collection of books, paintings, and raw material detailing his years of cryptozoology research and gathering of cryptid data. These photographs were taken and shared with me by Christoph Kummer, who was allowed to do an initial examination of the Heuvelmans files and then take these photographs, at my request. I then asked and was granted permission to publish these photos at Cryptomundo, by Olivier Glaizot, Conservateur, [...]
Pygmies Belittled: “Exhibited” At Zoo
History has repeated itself. Hominids have diminished others hominids, once again. Ota Benga and a chimpanzee, Bronx Zoo, 1906. “A hundred years ago, on September 8th, 1906, the Bronx Zoo in New York unveiled a new exhibit that would attract thousands of visitors to come and marvel. Inside a cage, in the monkey house, was a man. His name was Ota Benga. He was 22 years old, a member of the Batwa people, pygmies who lived in what was then, the Belgian Congo,” noted National Public Radio (NPR) last year. Protests occurred, and the Bronx Zoo closed the exhibit. A [...]
Kangaroo Beer, Sasquatch Bread, and Your Footprints

I was born the year a Bigfoot was reportedly killing dogs and sheep around Pine Ridge, Missouri; see page 230, of Janet and Colin Bord’s Bigfoot Casebook Updated. I am still in pursuit of the elusive Wetzel Kangaroo Beer empties or label. I don’t drink, but cryptobrewology lives on. Unlike some of [...]
Is It Real?
This is a casual moment of a couple caged Almas in a behind-the-scenes photograph from “Russian Bigfoot.” Tired of going outside and fighting the biting insects to wait two hours until your town sets off fifteen minutes of fireworks? Well, you can stay at home tonight and enjoy some thought-provoking cryptotelevision. Or maybe even do both? The Anomalist alerts us to this: Programming note: The National Geographic Channel starts its “Is It Real?” series today [July 4, 2007]… Each hour-long episode addresses a different topic. Snowmen Seeker? Pamir Expedition Leader Dies
Little is known of what the Soviet Russians did on their Pamir Mountains’ “Snowmen” expeditions of the 1960s, especially if they contained non-Russian members. What were their goals? What did they find? Was Tom Slick or one of his friends secretly involved in funding one such expedition? Malcolm Slesser. The death on Tuesday, June 26, 2007, announced today, of Malcolm Slesser, 82, is bringing to mind such questions anew. Slesser died doing what he loved best, climbing a mountain. According to the Scotsman on Saturday, June 30, 2007, the “veteran mountaineering expert from Edinburgh fell to his death from a [...]
Cryptozoo by Mail
Ever wanted your own personalized cryptid? Well, for twenty bucks you can have your idea envisioned by an artist who quickly draws your desire, via Monster by Mail. (See more ordering info at the bottom of this posting.) Thanks to Rogier van Bakel, I heard about this artist, Len Peralta who is in the midst of drawing a very limited number (150) of “Cryptozoo” cryptids. Getting in contact with Len, I challenged the artist to do an original hand-drawn sample of his specially imagined “Coleman’s Cryptozoo” with a Yeti, Nessie, Bigfoot, Mothman, and Dover Demon, and email me the result. [...]
Coast to Coast AM: Male Chauvinism Within Bigfoot Research?
Of course, at some level, one could say we don’t even know what we are looking for and what skills or odors or equipment it will ultimately take to find unknown hairy hominoids. After all, we haven’t found any Bigfoot, Yeti, Almas, or Skunk Ape yet, so what we have been doing isn’t working – or the unknown hairy hominoids are not out there. But that doesn’t stop some people from criticizing others who are for a completely open field of investigators – from academics to truck drivers, from women to men, from true believers to skeptics. For example, in [...]
GEICO’s Cavemen – Neandertal Prejudice or Comedy?
What would happen if a small relict band of Neandertals (Homo neanderthalensis) was discovered? What if they learned to speak some language known to modern humans (Homo sapiens) and tried to integrate into our society? For hominologists, such questions have been pondered for years, due to the fact that many of us have considered it a real possibility that Neandertals are behind reports of nuk-luk, Bushman, wudewasa (Eurasia’s Woodpeople) and other unknown hairy hominid sightings and encounters. (See The Field Guide of Bigfoot and Other Mystery Primates, specifically on “Neandertaloids,” pages 13, 23-26, 52-53, 90-91, 118-119, and 170.) The issue [...]
