I went to Ohio on Wednesday, April 9th, 2008, to give a special talk to a private, thoughtful, intellectual group of 150 people at the research organization called Emerson Climate Technologies. They wanted someone to stimulate their thoughts, to give examples of a different creative process, and, yes, to entertain them, scientifically and humanely. I did that by giving an illustrated lecture, full of humor and humanness, entitled “Cryptozoology: Passion and Patience.” I covered a lot of ground, from the beginnings of the study of hidden animals, through mentions of Ivan T. Sanderson, Bernard Heuvelmans, Ruth Harkness, Scott Norman, and [...]

Gorilla Sightings and Gorilla Suits
Are we entering an era when gorilla-suit-wearing workshop may become the next big rage (see the story at Boing Boing) and help people out in their cryptid hoaxes? Actually, using what Charles Fort called the “Wipe,” here’s the latest example of a quick explanation for something anomalistic, this time using the old chestnut, a gorilla suit, out of Tupelo, Mississippi. With four gorilla sightings on Thomas Street on Wednesday [April 9, 2008], it seemed the infamous Oliver inspired a copycat or copy primate. According to police, two postal workers and two parents picking their children up from school claimed to [...]
Kokako News
It is always good to update a year old story. The Kokako ~ the New Zealand version of the ivory-billed woodpecker intrigue ~ is back in the news. The Kokako has recently been in the newspapers again, with a new sighting of this contemporary cryptid. Alec Milne, an amateur ornithologist from Golden Bay, in the Nelson region at the top of the South Island, has reported to the New Zealand Department of Conservation that he has recently heard what he believes was the call of the South Island kokako at the head of the Cobb Valley in Kahurangi National Park, [...]
Waikato Monster Killed: 1887
Wanganui [New Zealand] Herald November 8, 1887 The Waikato Saurian Monster. Some months ago the Auckland papers were full of accounts of a mysterious monster that cleared carcasses out of slaughter houses, chased children, left peculiar tracks in the mud, etc.; but for some time there had been no mention of it. It appears now[,] however[,] that the stranger has been caught, and shot. We take the following account of its capture from a letter of a Hamilton correspondent to the Auckland Star: — It appears that a native, whilst fishing in his canoe just off the South Spit of [...]
Tales of the Rich, Famous and Cryptozoological
Who is Christopher Foyle? What do the rich and famous do with their money? Why don’t they donate it to the International Cryptozoology Museum via PayPal at lcoleman@maine.rr.com ? Ah, the questions one has while waiting in an airport for an economy class seat…ha ha. Richard Kay, recently writing for The Daily Mail, noted: The mystery of why Christopher Foyle, the nephew of the late and eccentric bookshop owner Christina, decided to quit Britain for sunnier climes is at last explained – he is off to live in tax exile in Monaco. “I’m looking forward to bumping into Sir Philip [...]
Share Your CryptoPlates
Maine, it was noted this week, has the 6th highest (by per capita) number of vanity plates in the United States of America. Here’s Cryptomundo correspondent Maine Crypto’s new “Cryptid” plate, her just-issued Maine license tags for her car. Very attractive, won’t you say? Do you have cryptozoologically-themed plates? What’s yours? My plates happen to read “Crypto1″ (Maine).
Dayton’s Hangar 18
On April 9-10, 2008, I’ll be making a brief visit to Dayton, Ohio (to deliver a private cryptozoology talk). Today, I pause to pass along a bit of Forteana. A couple years ago I was the co-author of Weird Ohio, and one of the stories I enjoyed sharing in that book was of Dayton’s so-called “Hangar 18.” I thought you might like to read a little about it today, while I travel to that fair city. (It is hardly about cryptids, but it certainly is a strange location tale, sort of an “urban legend of place,” and it speaks to [...]
Mississippi Hyena?
Tim McCary of Mississippi has exclusively shared the following video with Cryptomundo. The creature caught with his game video cam was photographed last fall 2007, in southwest Mississippi. Specifically, it was taken in a place called “Anna’s Bottom,” just north of Natchez, Mississippi. Mr. McCary has no reason for trickery, and merely sent it in because it vaguely appeared to look like a “hyena” trotting along (although he understands no hyenas should be seen in North America). He does not know what it is. Of course, it could be a coyote or dog, with or without mange, being filmed. It [...]
Lungless Frog Discovered
Photo of Barbourula kalimantanensis. Researchers have confirmed the first case of complete lunglessness in a frog, according to a report in the April 8, 2008, issue of Current Biology, a publication of Cell Press. The aquatic frog Barbourula kalimantanensis apparently gets all the oxygen it needs through its skin. The closely related Barbourula busuangensis or Philippine Flat-headed Frog. Previously known from only two specimens, two new populations of the aquatic frog Barbourula kalimantanensis were found by the team during a recent expedition to Indonesian Borneo. “We knew that we would have to be very lucky just to find the frog,” [...]
