Saturday, January 12, 2008, the world premiere showing of the new indie film, Monster in the Woods will occur at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, Maine. Built in 1912 to replace two former halls both destroyed by fire, the (Portland, Maine) City Hall Auditorium was a classic example of colonial style, boasting porticos and columns, a deep court and large wings. The hall was completely renovated beginning in January 1996, and today, the re-named Merrill Auditorium is a 1900 seat performing arts facility, located in the remarkable setting of downtown Portland, on the beautiful coast of Maine. The plot of Monster [...]
Yeti At McGill
The Year of the Yeti continues. Amazingly, my last Friday introduction of the classic film The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas and the new hardbound release of Ivan T. Sanderson’s Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come to Life at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City, is being mirrored (skeptically) with something quite similar occurring tomorrow in Quebec. At McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec, there will be a screening of the same film, preceded by an intriguing lecture. Here’s the announcement from McGill: The Redpath’s ever-popular Freaky Fridays series hits the New Year running, or at least ambling with a [...]
World Premiere: Monster in the Woods
Does Bigfoot roam Maine? Or merely groups of comedians? Here are some funny videos from a new movie. The world premiere showing of the completed, new Maine-based film, Monster in the Woods will occur at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, Maine, on January 12, 2008. Here is the main trailer, and three other videos related directly to this film. Note the mention of “cryptozoologists” near the end of video one, and how they make a cameo again in video four:
Pressie: What Is It?
In 1977, Randy L. Braun was hiking along Lake Superior when he had a mysterious encounter with an unidentified watery cryptid. What do you think his photograph of it looks like? What is it?
Pick “Bigfoot” For Seven Fortean Wonders, Round 3
Congratulations! Voters from Cryptomundo appear to have had an impact on the Round 2 polling for “The Seven Fortean Wonders of the World.” The final results for Round 2 are in, and of 151 votes, fully 35% (53 votes) were for “Bigfoot / Yeti.” After the choice of the location of Loch Ness was lost in Round 1, due to neglect on the part of our community, I felt it important for our voices to be heard by voting for the only cryptozoology choice left: “Bigfoot / Yeti.” I put out the call and you responded. Thank you! You did [...]
Cryptid Bovids?
Mystery animal films appear to predate the usual YouTube fakes:
40th Anniversary of Silver Bridge Collapse
December 15, 2007, is the 40th anniversary of the collapse of the Silver Bridge over the Ohio River. This year has been one of reflection with regard to this event. John A. Keel (above), who has written about Mothman as well as the suicides and deaths associated with it for decades, had his 1975 book turned into its namesake movie, The Mothman Prophecies, in 2002. Following is the clip from that motion picture of the dramatic recreation of the Silver Bridge collapse of December 15, 1967, which has been compared to the I-35W Bridge collapse of August 1st, 2007. In [...]
First Film of Long-Eared Jerboa
Long-eared Jerboa (Euchoreutes naso). An “extraordinary” desert creature has been caught on camera for what scientists believe is the first time. The long-eared jerboa, a tiny nocturnal mammal that is dwarfed by its enormous ears, can be found in deserts in Mongolia and China. Zoological Society of London (ZSL) scientist Jonathan Baillie said the footage was helping researchers to learn more about the mysterious animal. The species is classified as endangered on the IUCN Red list. The unusual animals were filmed in the Gobi desert during an expedition led by Dr Baillie. Until now, the creatures had proven extremely difficult [...]
