Former newspaper reporter and current Wisconsin cryptozoological author Linda Godfrey was able to get the late 2005 sighting of Matt Wakeley in her new book, Hunting the American Werewolf, published in March 2006. But it wasn’t until recently that she was able to sit down with the eyewitness and turn his description into a forensically-correct drawing. Here is the result: Wakely’s sighting took place near White Pigeon Road and Highway B, in southeastern Walworth County, Wisconsin, last fall. But as the author of the successful 2003 book, The Beast of Bray Road, Godfrey writes: “I’d like to make it very [...]
Cryptid Cats, Murdering Bigfoot, and Giant Claw
Need a cryptofix? How about trying some cryptofiction – via a new movie of a Mystery Felid, a new novel of a Maraudering Sasquatch, and a visual flashback at an old movie of a Giant Bird? Headlines on May 20, 2006, tell of “Giant Feral Cats to Scare on Screen”, and how they will appear through the device of a 1.5 million dollar movie. Shall our Australian readers see it first on a movie theater near you? The mystery big cat thought to prowl the Blue Mountains is set to star in a horror movie. A Sydney-based team will start [...]
Rising Sun: Gateway Event
Thirty-seven years ago today, a small town in Indiana served as the temporal and spatial gateway to the Midwestern hairy hominoid reports that would sweep across the hinderland of America in the 1970s. Momo (pictured below) was two or three years away (depending on what report you consider “first”), and the high strangeness of the ’77′s sightings was still around the time-span warp. Some events seem to have just the right names. It was almost sundown in the town with the opposite moniker. May 19, 1969 – 7:30 p.m. CDT, near Rising Sun, Indiana, at a location outside the home [...]
Publisher Speeds Killer ‘Gators
There’s an interesting little note in Publishers Weekly this morning. In an item entitled “Forget Later, Alligator—Let’s Publish Now” by Lynn Andriani, we already can see the reaction to the gator attacks we discussed earlier, here and here. Cryptomundo addressed why such news is of interest, also in this link. Andriani writes: Publishers often speed up books’ publication dates if relevant news events—earthquakes, blackouts, mining accidents—take place. Now they can add alligator attacks to the list. Lyons Press, which planned on releasing Killer ’Gators and Crocs: Gruesome Encounters from Across the Globe by Michael Garlock in November, has moved the [...]
Johor Bigfoot Found, Then What?
Up ahead, the quest is nearing its end. The leeches are sucking the energy from the media crew who forgot to wear their leech socks. Bees are buzzing around. Bird songs fill the air. But what’s that sound? A heavy breathing is heard. Sweat falls from the brows onto the heaving chests as the chase picks up speed. Footprints have been found, the live capture gear is at hand. The moment is here. Shooting to kill has been rejected. The searchers round a corner, and are met with an image of an unknown hominoid not unlike Peter Loh’s latest best [...]
Florida Gators Kill Two More
The Associated Press is reporting on May 14, 2006, that the "bodies of two women, both apparently killed by alligators, were found Sunday less than a week after a similar death in a state that had seen just 17 confirmed fatal attacks by the animals in the previous 57 years." The cases specifically are: (1) A 23-year-old woman staying at a secluded cabin near Lake George was attacked while snorkling at a lakeside recreation area, said Marion County Fire-Rescue Captain Joe Amigliore. The lake is about 50 miles southeast of Gainesville. and (2) In Pinellas County, the death of [a [...]
Rival Group Claims “Johor Bigfoot” Are Escaped Orangutans
On February 18, 2006, I wrote a Cryptomundo blog entitled, “Are Malaysian Bigfoot Colonies Really Orangutans?”. Today, May 14, 2006, somewhat symbolically perhaps, a rival group to Dr. Vincent Chow’s research team is announcing they feel they have the ultimate theory that the Malaysian Bigfoot are nothing more than known orangutans. Please click and see here for images supporting the text below. Has the discussion of the photographs taken of the “Bigfoot” in Johor revealed anything about these “Mawas” sightings? In February, I wondered aloud then if the Johor Wildlife Protection Society was merely talking about orangutans when discussing these [...]
Monsters & Mom’s Day
Here’s a quick roundup of stories surfacing today, Sunday, May 14, 2006, on America’s Mother’s Day. Perhaps someone will get an idea for a quick fieldtrip to Mormon country, Malaysia, or Massachusetts, out of this gathering? But stay away from Memphis! Part three of D. Robert Carter’s series on the Bear Lake Monsters and kin is in today’s Provo Daily Herald, “Fishermen find Utah Lake Monster.” Here for you are the links to the two earlier parts: “Why Bear Lake Again?” and “Meandrous Monster Migrates to Utah Lake.” On May 14, 2006, The New Straits Times published another article, “Johor [...]
Another Malaysian Mawas Book With Photos?!!
Oh no, more hype on the Johor Mawas? My goodness, those Malaysian media folks are drumming up more interest in their local "Bigfoot" again. How dare they? Are they just trying to stir up folks at Cryptomundo? And now they are talking about two books? And is this a new cryptid name, Orang Lenggor? What’s up with all of this as we go six months deep into this story? Haven’t we been here before? Yes, but, hey, is there different information that exists in the news? Well, that’s why we are reporting on it here. A new article published on [...]
Menehune Today
I had an excellent time on The Coast to Coast AM radio program (gulp, from 2 am to 5 am my time!) last night. George Noory and I shared high energy, great fun, and we moved through several topics you’ve been reading about here at Cryptomundo (e.g. Malaysian Mawas, Mt. Hood Bigfoot, Argentina Lake Monster, Thunderbird, Mothman, and Lizardmen). The crypto-cat fight was even briefly mentioned. In the last hour, we also had wonderful callers. A recap of the program and link to the audio in their archives can be found here. The first caller was a remarkable one. The [...]
