Officer Kyle Finney, 27, carefully holds the 2-foot-long alligator he pulled from Horseshoe Pond, near Concord, New Hampshire, on August 29, 2006. Concord Police Department photograph. The local newspaper Concord Monitor noted that Kinney was already known as a hero for pulling an 84-year-old woman from a burning automobile last year. Now he can add alligator recovery to his resume. When the paper reported on the sightings of the gator the day before, the Concord Monitor mentioned that a 3-feet-long alligator had been picked up from Bath, New Hampshire, a few weeks earlier.
What Is A Yarwen?
Has a Yarwen been captured in Maine? Read more about that question here. In this column, I wish to explore what kind of monsters (from creatures to humans) might be behind the use of such a word as "Yarwen." First, let’s consider that this term is not being used loosely, but very specifically to describe a person’s killing of an adult cryptid and the transporting of its baby. The mental graphic images of a young hominoid in a cage in New Jersey, yes, Jersey, are just more than I can take, but I’ll press onward, in the service of cryptozoology’s [...]
CryptoChannel ‘06
The Sci-Fi Channel’s start date for the new Rob Mariano vehicle will be Wednesday, October 11, 2006. The program “Sci Fi Investigates” will air at 10:00 pm Eastern/9:00 pm Central. The new reality show will be a six-week series hosted by the “Survivor” and “Amazing Race” alum “Boston Rob” and produced by NBC News Productions. Among the subjects covered will be “Bigfoot,” “Mothman,” “Paranormal Hotspots,” “Roswell Revisited,” “The Afterlife” and “Voodoo.” Cryptomundo earlier cautiously mentioned this program on July 14, 2006. As I critiqued it then, the program appears to be taking a skeptical or hostile approach to these subjects, [...]
Beast of Bladenboro
The following is a guest article by Jefferson Weaver, former reporter at the Bladen Journal of Bladen, North Carolina. Coverage of "beast" became real monster for Bladenboro By Jefferson Weaver Staff Writer Whether or not a hungry monster really stalked Bladenboro in December of 1953 and January of 1954, there was a Beast in Bladenboro bigger than anything on four feet. Press coverage. "Bladenboro has received a lot of front page publicity in the state press," one newspaper writer reported when the "crisis" was over. Writing in the Bladen Journal, publisher Norman McCullough joked that if the beast were ever [...]
Snowbeast’s Stefano Dies
Joseph Stefano appears in a publicity photo with one of his monster creations. Joseph Stefano, who will be most remembered in the mainstream media as the scriptwriter for the plot twist in Psycho, according to the Washington Post, has died of a heart attack August 25 at the Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center in Thousand Oaks, California. He was 84. From a cinematic cryptofictional point of view, Stefano will be most recalled, however, affectionately for several television and motion picture achievements dealing with creatures and monsters. His life appeared to have always pointed in that direction. When he started [...]
Menagerie of Three: Beast, Blunders, and Bradley
Your humble Cryptomundo cryptozoologist Loren Coleman examines the carcass of the beast or more correctly, what is left of it. In the background are, from left to right, Michelle O’Donnell and Debi Bodwell. This is a Sun Journal photograph by Douglas Van Reeth. Used by permission. Click to enlarge. The August two weeks of the Maine Mutant’s silly season have passed. Surprisingly, the media aftermath has been mild. I noticed on Friday, August 25, 2006, in California, John Boston’s (a/k/a Mr. Santa Clarita Valley) column in The Signal, “Where’s a Hairy MH When You Need One?”, attempted to be humorous, [...]
Sun Journal: Creature Looks Like A Canine
Click on image for full-size version Photograph by Michelle O’Donnell. Used by permission. The body of the dead animal found in Turner, Maine, according to DNA tests conducted on behalf of and paid for by the Lewiston newspaper, the Sun Journal, belonged to a member of the genus Canis, not a Tasmanian devil, not a rodent, not a Chupacabras, not a hyena, not a werewolf, not an Eastern Bigfoot, and/or not from any wild species speculations that were heard over the last ten days. Nevertheless, it is important to understand, the real Mystery Beast is still out there! Readers of [...]
Merchandising the Monster
Artist: Roland LaVallee, Crow Track Gallery, Eastport, Maine. Used with permission. Lewiston reporter and Cryptomundo associate these days, Mark Laflamme takes some moments on Monday, August 21, 2006, to look at “Merchandising the beast?” in the Sun Journal. Please click on image for full-size version Photograph by Michelle O’Donnell. Used by permission. Laflamme speaking to a local central Maine readership, first and foremost, observes: Admit it. All week, you’ve been calling friends around the country to brag about the mystery creature stalking the Maine woods. You love that dead, unidentified beast and you want a way to celebrate it. Put [...]
No Silly Season, Just Dog Daze
Click on image for full-size version Photograph by Michelle O’Donnell. Used by permission. On Monday, August 21,2006, Judith Meyer, editor at the Sun Journal in Lewiston, Maine, took a few moments to ponder the seven days that had just gone by. In her article “The Dog Daze in August,” she writes, in part: Last week was beyond weird. The public clamor for stories and photos about the mystery creature in Turner was so intense, the Sun Journal Web site couldn’t keep up and crashed. The switchboard was busy with media requests from around the world, and researchers and experts in [...]
