Sea Serpents

FeeJee Mermaids & Other Gaffs

The easiest pseudocryptozoological exhibition items to have, of course, are often the gaffs and hoaxes. Among those in most cabinets of curiosities are the Feejee mermaids and the furred trouts, both taxidermy fakes. I have my share. I use them to let people know these objects are often shown as “almost real” specimens. Most honest sideshow owners displaying them often merely only ask “What is It?” or “Is it Real?” But slowly the drift has been, perhaps due to eBay, for people to present these items as cryptozoological, from “unknown animals.” For cryptozoologists, we need to be aware of this [...]

Death by Sea Serpent?

In response to my “Sea Serpent Snatching?” blog, cryptozoologist Matt Bille, author of 2006′s Shadows of Existence, sent along a comment. He mentioned that there has been only one known case of the possible killing of humans by a Sea Serpent. I asked Matt to expand on this, and submit a guest blog on the account. He agreed and you will find his welcome overview of the incident below. Matt with a friend. Matt Bille’s contribution on this intriguing Sea Serpent case follows. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Death by Sea Serpent? By Matt Bille In the modern history of “sea serpents,” we have [...]

Sea Serpent Snatching?

Recently in response to my blog about the San Francisco Bay Sea Serpent, one comment maker wrote in to mention this news item: By now everyone who is connected by radio, tv, internet or newspaper is aware that James Gray of Microsoft has just disappeared from the face of the earth while expertly sailing his 40ft sailboat on a day cruise under nearly perfect condition, through very well known waters, to the Farallon Islands. Speculation as to his whereabouts is wide-open and even the most serious and likely suggestions underscore just how slight is the ability of our human perceptions [...]

Oudemans’ Classic Resurfaces

You can go online today and find a copy of A.C. Oudemans’ The Great Sea-Serpent for $3705 US. The book is very rare, having been published first in 1892, by E. J. Brill in Leiden and by Luzac & Co. in London. Soon, a much more reasonably-priced edition will be available. The reprinting of the classic cryptozoological text, The Great Sea Serpent by Antoon C. Oudemans, has been in the works for months, with a new introduction by Loren Coleman. It will be published late in February, with an official publication date of March 1, 2007. This book is being [...]

Lake Cryptid Video

Here is the Norwegian so-called “Sea Serpent” (apparently a Lake Monster?) video footage. Please see the previous post here for the background details. What do you think?

SF Sea Serpent Video

This illustration (above) from the early 1800s’ sighting of a Sea Serpent off the coast of New England is compared with a video capture (below) from the Clarks’ 2004 Sea Serpent videotape taken off of California. Sea serpent? Dolphins? Water birds? The Clarks have done a great deal to secure the analysis of their video. Bob and Bill Clark have received and are now sharing stabilized portions of their San Francisco Bay sea serpent video. (An uplink will be shared here if a format for the internet if available.) Please find here the link to their pdf attachment which contains [...]

Norwegian Lake Monster

This picture is taken at a distance of about 20 metres at the Snaasa lake near Steinkjer i North Troendelag. (Photo: Einar Johannes Sandnes ) In Sweden and Norwary, sometimes, “sea serpent” is a term used for lake monsters. Sea serpent in Snaasa lake Is this a sea serpent? Einar Johannes Sandnes wonders if it really was a sea serpent that he saw popping its head out of the lake. What do you think? By David Brændeland Could this be a sea serpent? The creature that stuck its head out of Snaasa lake managed to rattle Einar Johannes Sandnes. It [...]

Sunday Comics: Loren Coleman, Cryptid Hunter

Peter Loh has penned a new image (above), and I feel honored to be placed under his own special cryptocartoonist’s magnifying glass, once again. In “My Comic Life,” I overviewed various artists’ past graphic attempts to capture me, including the following by Loh: That Loren, the fedora-wearing Loren, was created by Loh for Scott Marlowe’s Crypto-Man comic series. Goofy in the Pine Tree State (no telling which one is Goofy) is one of Peter Loh’s more subtle but funny renderings, which touched close to home, as this is a visual commentary on the 2006 Maine Mutant investigation. A Sea Serpent Surprise

I turned on the television this morning, over there in the background near my desk, to check the news on the local NBC channel. The very first thing on the screen was an individual discussing a Sea Serpent sighting. I happened to be in the midst of writing an article about New England Sea Serpents. I was floored, struck by, well, this bolt from out of nowhere. I quickly discovered the guy was a Reverend Peter B. Panagore, giving one of those daily messages the stations run, it seems, so their viewers can take a break from the news and [...]
