I am updating this item. Wisconsin Public Radio, who produced this program, nationally broadcast their “The Bestiary” program over the September 2nd weekend, and now have a very attractive webpage about it here. Public Radio International (PRI) broadcast the interviews they conducted earlier this summer with various people interested in fantastic beasts and cryptozoology in the program entitled “The Bestiary.” It is a creative, entertaining production done in the PRI tradition of mixing sounds, music, voices, and other audio treats to keep the listener interested as they explore the subject. I especially liked the choice of the bumper music: “Abominable [...]

Jersey Mermaid
August 10 – The people of Tom’s River, N.J., are just now having a little sensation – it being nothing less than the capture of a veritable mermaid or at least a water animal strongly resembling that poetic species of fish. Two fishermen, while pursuing their vocation a few days ago in the Inlet, effected the capture after a violent struggle. At seeing the animal its captors became hugely frightened, and took to their heels. After a while they mustered up sufficient courage to return and look at their prize. In appearance it more resembled a human being than a [...]
Cousteau and Tessie
The subject of Jacques Cousteau and Lake Tahoe has been talked about here on Cryptomundo in the past, for example, when it was brought up by mystery_man in the post Cryptomundo’s Ultimate CZ FAQs and in another post entitled Another Bowness Monster Sighting?. What can be added on this topic? Tom Stienstra of the San Francisco Chronicle, who has written his share of Bigfoot articles for the newspaper, said the following in his article Mysteries of the deep at Lake Tahoe. Even famed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau is said to have had a brush with something horrific in a deepwater dive [...]

What’s On Your Lesser-Known Cryptids List?
What are the lesser-known cryptids that you know about, that you are pursuing, and/or that you feel should get more attention? Nowadays, it is easy to come up with a list of popular well-known cryptids. Click on this one of the top 50 here, to see what I mean. But we all know there are vast numbers of cryptids out there that remain hidden, and even hidden from media attention. One task I tackled as the 1990s ended was to bring cryptozoology to a broader audience, introduce the diversity of the searchers, and highlight more than the big three cryptids [...]

See Monster
The sea is the best field for data. – Charles Fort. Okay, in celebration of today – August 7th – being the official “Sea Serpent Day” – here above is a humorous take on the events of the next 24 hours from cartoonist Charles Berlin, creator of the world explorer character Professor Wexler. M.T. Anderson’s “Serpent Came to Gloucester” (Candlewick, 2005) recounts in rhyming verse the early-19th-century sighting of a mysterious sea serpent off the coast of Gloucester. Inspired by real-life reports, Anderson writes from the perspective of a boy who witnesses the creature’s visitations and is secretly pleased when [...]
Homo pongoides Emerges From Lausanne
The following images are more photographs being shared from the inside of “The Department of Cryptozoology B. Heuvelmans, Museum of Zoology, Lausanne, Switzerland.” This location is the sanctuary for Bernard Heuvelmans’ collection of books, paintings, and raw materials, detailing his years of cryptozoology research and gathering of cryptid data. Today, you can more clearly seen how he organized his data on unknown hairy hominiods and other cryptids. Once again, these photographs were taken and shared with me by Christoph Kummer, who was allowed to begin to examine the Heuvelmans files and then take these photographs, at my request. I then [...]
Belfast’s Muck Monster
Megan Richardson’s article in a Downeast Maine newspaper will be remembered as the first media discussion of a little known Maine cryptid, Belfast’s Muck Monster. Prospect [Maine] — World-renowned cryptozoologist Loren Coleman visited Fort Knox over the weekend as part of the fort’s Paranormal and Psychic Faire, which also featured presentations on dowsing and paranormal investigation. Coleman was on hand for much of the weekend to answer questions and autograph copies of his numerous books. Coleman started working in cryptozoology, which literally means the [...]
