New Gorilla Population Estimate Criticized
For years cryptozoological researchers have been questioned and criticized for estimating the population of large hairy unknown primates in North America, most often called Bigfoot and Sasquatch. Now comes news that the world is excited by the findings from the Wildlife Conservation Society that the western lowland gorilla subspecies is estimated to be 125,000 animals strong. Xihuanet news is reporting that wildlife researchers on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, announced a major increase in the population of lowland gorillas after a new census tallied more than 125,000 in an 18,000-square-mile (47,000-square-kilometer) deeply forested area of the Republic of Congo. Estimates from [...]
Bigfoot Body on C2C
Okay, so the power was turned off in the bfters’ freezer in Georgia, they are telling us. Okay, they are being harassed. All the July fees for the bftrackers “expeditions” are being refunded. What does this all sound like to you? Is an exit scenario being developed? As I mentioned here yesterday, late last night a “Coast to Coast AM with George Noory” producer invited me to come on as their guest to discuss the Georgia Bigfoot body case and the Grassman episode of “MonsterQuest.” I was exhausted from the Royal Alberta Museum jetlag, so I respectfully declined. The program [...]
Skeptic Questions Patterson Bigfoot Tracks
Talking of the photographs above, the so-called “Bigfoot Skeptic” this month writes: These are the tracks that Patterson claimed the Bigfoot made from his famous 1967 film. Notice the toes. How smooth and perfectly shaped they are. Also notice that despite the deep impression of the foot, the only part of the toe that shows in the plaster is the round tips of the toe. No other part of the toe is seen in the deep plaster cast. This suggests that it was not made by an actual fleshly foot stepping down and putting weight down. Shouldn’t the toes smoosh [...]
Davies Replies to Selma Film Critics
Adam Davies (above) in Mongolia. The following is the video of the “Seljord Serpent” or Selma, which was taken at Lake Seljord, Norway, credited to Adam Davies and Andrew Sanderson. (Please click on image directly above for a larger sized version.) Extreme Expeditions’ Adam Davies replies to the comments, questions, and criticisms: Thank you to everyone who has commented on the Seljord Serpent footage so far. To answer a few basic questions: 1/ The footage is shaky because Andy was stood up in a boat when he took it. It’s shot on a hand held camera. We had hardly any [...]
Jan-May 2008: 130 New Vertebrates!
Eutropis tammanna (Scincomorpha: Scincidae) Birder, herper, evolutionary biologist, naturalist Nicholas Sly of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, asked himself a question many of us here often ask ourselves. How many new animals have been discovered recently? The only new bird described, to date, in 2008? Zosterops somadikartai (Passeriformes: Zosteropidae) Nick Sly set out to do a little research project to come up with an answer, at least for a small sample. He restricted himself to a manageable goal: only vertebrates, only species that are newly discovered taxa – no splitting of previously known taxa, and only new descriptions for the [...]
Wiki Weirdness & WV’s Winged Wonder
Okay, the news organizations’ election primary attention shifts to West Virginia today, Tuesday, May 13th, so let’s talk Mothman. Actually, I’m going to use this opportunity to note the sinister editing that regularly takes place at the Wikipedia entry for “Mothman.” I’ve been watching the site because some incredible “political” inputs have occurred with the “Mothman” entry, apparently by skeptics and debunkers inserting words like “claims” and deleting large sections of information. I did not write any of the section, but have dipped in to correct citations, edit slanted words out, and to try to remove mistakes. But what I [...]
A Tale of Two Suits
What a better way to deal with Mother’s Day than to talk about the “Mother” of all films dealing with Bigfoot and, indeed, the best footage around of a possible maternal Sasquatch: the Patterson-Gimlin film.
Pondering Bigfoot Sex in Kansas City
Okay, yes, it does take a lot to get people’s attention these days. Sometimes it can be the implied promises found in a blog headline. Other times it may be the surprises via an assumed backdoor. But how about thoughtful and reflective images, as well? It is more difficult to go there, right? Nevertheless, take a quiet moment, turn off the iPod, the iPhone, and the HD television, and look at this brief slide show of some artistic photographs by clicking here. Sit back and enjoy the images. Alice Thorson of The Kansas City Star takes a look at “Animal [...]
Addax to Zebras: Mungall’s Exotic Animal Field Guide
Life works in strange ways. So does death. Good things can come from appreciating the moments that issue from both. Cryptozoologist Scott Norman’s and then my crypto-supportive mother’s separate sudden deaths within a forty-day span gave me pause recently to slow down a bit. Between the two events, I kept writing at a busy pace and conducted my “Pinkie” expedition to Florida. I also traveled to various locations to give cryptozoology talks, but I additionally wanted to take some quiet time for myself to visit animal parks and zoos. I’ve always found such gems in the midst of human habitats [...]
