Unknown Fish Footage

Here is a new video of a strange, unidentified fish caught off Burgeo, Newfoundland ~ dated July 30, 2008: Appears to be some kind of deep sea species, such as the anglerfish. Humpback anglerfish (Melanocetus johnsonii) Krøyer’s deep sea angler fish (Ceratias holboelli), two images above. But actually, I think it may be a fish that is often mistaken for Ceratias holboelli. Triplewart seadevil (Cryptopsaras couesii) – Pêcheur à trèfle, found frequently in the delta of the St. Lawrence Seaway, not far from Burgeo.

Secrets of Room N008

You remember the scene from the end of the first Indiana Jones movie? Recall the endless rows of boxes in storage in that secret warehouse? Of course, the reality is that most large museums around the world actually do have such storage areas. The “outfront” exhibits at most museums are impressive. But, for example, I was reminded quickly in Alberta, once again, that less than 10% of the holdings of a museum are what the public sees. The Columbian mammoth is on exhibit in Alberta with other Pleistocene mammals. When I visited the Royal Alberta Museum, the director of Communications, [...]

Montauk Monster: Raccoon?

Something strange indeed did wash ashore at Montauk Island, New York. Is the “Montauk Monster” nothing more than a raccoon without an upper jaw, as proclaimed by local officials? See below.

Cryptid Washes Ashore At Montauk

Something strange has washed ashore at Montauk Island, New York. “This is an actual monster, some sort of rodent-like creature with a dinosaur beak. A tipster says that there is ‘a government animal testing facility very close by in Long Island,’” says Gawker in a posting for Tuesday, July 29, 2008. Comments like “That’s a turtle, without its shell,” make no sense because of the teeth. Some fossil turtles had teeth, but no modern turtles possess real teeth. What is this animal? Why can’t people put some sort of size reference object in these mystery photos? How big is this [...]

Beautiful New Manta Video

The smaller manta. The larger manta, the new species. It truly is a tale of Beauty and the Beast. Dr. Andrea Marshall is shown on a beautiful new video, swimming with the recently discovered manta and discussing her discovery. The scenes remind me of the swimming ballet of The Creature from the Black Lagoon. Dr. Marshall (pictured above & below) can be viewed on the video by clicking here. Quite compelling. Dr. Andrea Marshall is also pictured above. The photo accompanies her notice that she supports her work by conducting trips and tours related to manta research. In one planned [...]

Was It An African Lion?

A helicopter and members of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado Division of Wildlife were among those searching for an African lion in eastern El Paso County on Monday. The search for the large cat was called off Monday afternoon. Was the large unknown animal seen in Colorado an African lion? Panthera atrox, the American Lion, known from the Pleistocene? A feral dog? An escaped pet felid? It certainly befits the classic definition of a cryptid, unknown, uncaught, unidentified, and yet surely an animal. Here is a roundup of the various reproductions of the cellphone image published this [...]
