Since 2000, I have published my annual "best of lists" in cryptozoology. Last year’s list of the best non-fiction books can be found here. Cryptid Quagga?
Quagga An article in the Edmonton Journal, December 13, 2006, concerns an alleged quagga, a South Africa species with genetic links to zebras said to be extinct for over 100 years. This specific equine has been missing for over two weeks from a farm located at Carrot Creek, a little way west of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The animal seems rather unique: The eight-year-old stallion, named Zebastian, is a brown zebra with black stripes, and its owner fears the animal’s unique looks will tempt area hunters who don’t know how special it is. Plus… [Patricia] O’Neil bought Zebastian seven years ago [...]
Memphis Manatee Found Dead
The out-of-place manatee, first seen the weekend of October 21-22, 2006, when fishermen spotted it in Wolf River Harbor, near Memphis, has been found dead. According to the Associated Press: Police spokesman Sgt. Vince Higgins said the manatee was discovered around 1:30 p.m. CDT (1930 GMT) [on Monday, December 11, 2006] at Lake McKellar, off the Mississippi River south of Memphis. Cryptomundo reader Lou Jackson also sends info from the more detailed article in the Memphis Commercial Appeal for December 12, 2006. It notes the specifics of how the dead animal was found, on the north bank of the lake, [...]
Alligators-In-The-Sewers Are Real
In the early 1970s, I did quite a great deal of library archive research on out-of-place alligators. That resulted in the publication of various Fortean articles, such as "Showers of Alligators," (Fate, Vol. 26, September 1973) and "Erratic Crocodilians and Other Things" (INFO Journal, 12, Summer 1973). Finally, I made a unique discovery that alligators-in-the-sewers were not all just legendary, and were not merely a figment of smoking too much weed in the 60s. I tracked down articles that noted real alligators were found and killed in New York City, specifically in that city’s sewers in the 1930s. My formal [...]
Three-Toes Revisited
St. Petersburg Times: Tony Signorini said that in 1946 or 1947 his boss saw a picture of dinosaur tracks in a National Geographic and said, "You know, we could have fun with this." Ted McLaren, St. Petersburg Times: Signorini’s tracks, using these 30-pound molds, created a sensation. A zoologist speculated they were left by a giant penguin. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Tony Signorini told the media in 1988 that it was all a hoax, and then recycled it as “news” again last summer. (I refused to post it here as “news” then for that reason.) The zoologist was Ivan T. Sanderson, and he [...]
Pondering OOP Dolphins and Manatees
What is to be made of the recent reports of river-dwelling manatees and now a dolphin? Have some of these known species been misidentified as cryptids in the past? Well, yes, they probably have been. First, let me share a mention of the newest account. Reporter Elizabeth Ratto of the Boston Globe writes that a “common dolphin” was sighted on Friday, October 27, 2006: …swimming in the Fore River, just outside the Braintree Yacht Club, until it exited Boston Harbor with high tide around 3 p.m., according to Tony LaCasse, spokesman for the New England Aquarium. The aquarium was alerted [...]
Mystery Kangaroos Again
Yes, Austrian, not Australian, kangaroos are in the news. According to an Associated Press report, one was seen leaping down a Tyrol province highway during October 2006. But on October 11, law enforcement officials explained to the public this was an alleged September escapee from an enclosure in the village of Volders. At least, that is the police statement. The uncaught kangaroo is still at large. Reportedly, in March, 2006, a kangaroo was encountered in southern Austria. A local veterinarian using a stun gun captured it. Then a Tyrol wild animal breeder came forth, saying it was his. Humm. These [...]
Mermaid Photos Again
Today, Cryptomundo has received more emails telling us that strange and mysterious Mermaid photos supposedly snapped in Mexico, Dominican Republic, or Malaysia are circulating on the Internet. These emails are asking for us to either identify the “Mermaid” or post the photographs on Cryptomundo. But we have already done this. As I mentioned a few days ago when I published several of the photos here, these images are of a taxidermy fake. The object pictured is a piece of art from American Juan Cabana, who is well-known for his smaller fake Feejee Mermaids. It probably was photographed from various angles [...]
More Gators
Officer Kyle Finney, 27, carefully holds the 2-foot-long alligator he pulled from Horseshoe Pond, near Concord, New Hampshire, on August 29, 2006. Concord Police Department photograph. The local newspaper Concord Monitor noted that Kinney was already known as a hero for pulling an 84-year-old woman from a burning automobile last year. Now he can add alligator recovery to his resume. When the paper reported on the sightings of the gator the day before, the Concord Monitor mentioned that a 3-feet-long alligator had been picked up from Bath, New Hampshire, a few weeks earlier.
Injun Devils
There are many offensive terms for different kinds of people. The list is long. One phrase that you will find in old records and some modern ones, denoting Native Americans or American Indians, is “Injun.” The exact origins of “Injun” are lost in time, but dictionaries will tell you that the word seems to have surfaced in 1805-1815, as a variation of “Indian,” through assibilation (the act of changing a name by pronouncing it with a hissing or whistling sound). Scholarly sources even compare “Injun” to what happened in 1875-1880, to those who settled in Louisiana and Maine, descended from [...]
