I sometimes neglect the fact that few people know really what I have written, in total. Today, for example, a young man emailed me with this message: “How many books have you done Loren? I have only come across two.” Well, I can forget myself, often, for many reasons. It happens. Ha ha. Memory and lists of things-to-do aside, one reason is that there are many ways to count the unfolding of my life that occurs via my modest library of written works. You can look at “how many” in terms of various editions, revisions, and reprints. Or you can [...]
Extinct SE Asia Vulture Found
The only known colony in Southeast Asia of slender-billed vultures (Gyps tenuirostrishas) – shown above – have been discovered in Cambodia, along with other endangered bird species. The vulture colony was discovered in January 2007, in the rainforests east of the Mekong River in Cambodia’s Stung Treng Province, according to Michael Casey’s Associated Press Bangkok-based dispatch for February 7, 2007. The slender-billed vultures were believed extinct throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand and Cambodia, and only having been found in northern India recently. Some call it the world’s rarest vulture. We discovered the nests on top of a hill where two [...]
2000+ New Species!
Thousands of New Sea Species Found A French-led marine expedition team has discovered what is believed to be thousands of new species of molluscs and crustaceans around a Philippine island. The announcement was made by officials and scientists on Monday [February 5, 2007]. Some 80 scientists, technicians, students and volunteers from 19 countries led by Philippe Bouchet of the French National Museum of Natural History surveyed waters around Panglao island, 400 miles south-east of Manila from 2004-2005. The Panglao Marine Biodiversity Project turned over more than a hundred “holotype” or representative specimen of the rare finds to the Philippine National [...]
“Hidden” Frog Found
Talk about your “hidden animal.” Now we know why they call cryptozoology the study of “hidden animals.” (It’s a joke, herpers.) Above is shown one of the rare members of the Nannophrys frogs, from Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon, which frequently remains as a historical artifact in their scientific names). Craig Heinselman has posted at Strange Ark that there has been a new species of frog (shown below) described from Sri Lanka. It is a new species of endemic frog belonging to the genus Nannophrys. Heinselman notes: “In 2004 and 2005, nine specimens of the amphibian were collected. These [...]
New Legless Amphibian Found
A new species of legless amphibian discovered by an Indian research team. The dispatch from Panaji gives the details: The significant discovery at Keri village, 20 km from the Mhadei dam site in Goa, highlights the wealth of biodiversity in the Western Ghats. The earthworm-like creature has been named Geneophis goansis. It is the first species to be named after Goa, which is tucked in the lap of the Sahyadri hill ranges. The construction of a dam across the Mhadei river on the Goa-Karnataka border has sparked a row between the neighbours. The dispute is now in the Supreme Court. [...]
New Cloud-Forest Rat Announced
This illustration depicts Isothrix barbarabrownae, a newly discovered species of Neotropical rodent, in its arboreal habitat in the cloud-forests of Peru. (Frankly, dispute this being the orientation the drawing is being published in the press releases, I think the artist was showing this new species on a tree branch, not climbling up it.) The strikingly unusual animal has long dense fur, a broad blocky head, thickly furred tail and a blackish crest of fur on the crown, nape and shoulders. It is about the size of a squirrel. Coelacanth Quickies: Hofmeyr and Mount Karthala
Coelacanth tidbits have been surfacing and leaping up into my awareness over the last few days. I’ve fished them out of my short term catches and netted them anew here for you. 1) A highly debated bit of hominid fossil news these days is focussing on the Hofmeyr skull. The skull, found 55 years ago in a river bed near Hofmeyr in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, has resurfaced because of a new analysis of the contents of the inside of the skull. This new study has shown that the Hofmeyr skull is a lot older than people thought. [...]
What Is A New Species?
This is the latest new mammal discovered in Europe, Mus cypriacus or the Cypriot mouse, which was described last year in the journal Zootaxa. How does one determine that a new species has been discovered? How is it that one location has one species of salamander and thirty years later there are said to be many new species in that area? From where do all the new species come? The Naung Mung Scimitar-Babbler (Jabouilleia naungmungensis) was discovered in the pre-montane rainforests of northern Myanmar (Burma) in 2005. Their discovery, however, was not announced until 2006. It is a unique new [...]
Patterson Dies + 35: Anniversaries of 2007
This is the week, 35 years ago that Roger Patterson, rodeo rider, songwriter, and Bigfoot hunter, died. Thirty-five years! How time flies. During the next twelve months you will find your calendar filled with anniversaries that hit close to home, if you are interested in cryptids and other "strange things" that happen all the time. This year is the 400th anniversary of the founding of Virginia’s Jamestown colony and is (according to various media) the biggest milestone of the year in the United States of America. Intriguingly, 2007 will see the publication of many books about Virginia, including Weird Virginia. [...]
Thai Turtle Rediscovery
Thai villagers have caught a river terrapin turtle that was thought to be extinct in the country, the World Wide Fund for Nature-Thailand announced this week. The female turtle – known for its egg-shaped shell and upturned snout – was found January 3, 2007, in a mangrove canal in Phang Nga province on the country’s Andaman coast. It was the first time the turtle species has been found in Thailand in two decades. The mangrove terrapin (Batagur baska) found is pictured below:
