Hot on the heels of Lewiston Sun Journal’s Mark LaFlamme being named “Journalist of the Year,” there’s more popular culture news of the Maine Mystery Beast. The 2006 Mount Desert Island Marathon® is to be run on that scenic Maine coastal location on Sunday, October 15, 2006. Artist Paul Szauter has written to inform me that: There are, at last count, 29 mile marker banners up for auction. The silent auction will conclude at the finish line in Southwest Harbor on Sunday. My banner for this year’s marathon celebrates the Maine Mystery Beast, the Terror of Lewiston. At Szauter’s webpage [...]
Mystery Kangaroos Again
Yes, Austrian, not Australian, kangaroos are in the news. According to an Associated Press report, one was seen leaping down a Tyrol province highway during October 2006. But on October 11, law enforcement officials explained to the public this was an alleged September escapee from an enclosure in the village of Volders. At least, that is the police statement. The uncaught kangaroo is still at large. Reportedly, in March, 2006, a kangaroo was encountered in southern Austria. A local veterinarian using a stun gun captured it. Then a Tyrol wild animal breeder came forth, saying it was his. Humm. These [...]
Cast Sale: Seekers Change Tune
The UK’s Telegraph is putting a new spin on the reason behind the selling of the Johor Bigfoot cast. Reporter Sebastien Berger in Lukut writes in an article entitled “Explorer hopes plaster cast will raise funds to search for Bigfoot,” in part: In the jungle of southern Malaysia, where legends of a giant man-ape echo along with the calls of forest wildlife, a plaster cast of a huge footprint is precious evidence. Syed Abdullah Alattas, the founder of Paranormal Seekers Malaysia, found the footprint outside Lukut, in Johor. But it is difficult to raise enough cash to help prove the [...]
Exclusive: Johor Bigfoot Cast Copy
Joshua Gates – shown above on his investigative trek in Malaysia with Seekers Sis and Illa – reveals to Cryptomundo the startling news that an excellent first generation copy of the Johor Bigfoot cast sits safely in California. Illa shows off the cast last February, as photographed from a different angle, above, as opposed to the often seen image, below. Joshua Gates, above, was involved with obtaining the original Johor cast, in the jungle. But, as it turns out, a copy was made; see the photo directly above, which was previsiously published as showing the original. Gates is shown below [...]
American Offers $50,000 For Johor Cast
Cryptomundo correspondent and Malaysia Star reporter Marsha Tan has been kind enough to send along her latest Johor Bigfoot article to be shared here. If anyone knows the identities of the (1) American “Bigfoot researcher” or (2) the “museum owner” who are behind the offers to either trade casts (yeah, right the Seekers are going to take up that one) or the $50,000 payment for the cast, we’d like to hear from you. My previous blog entry on this subject is here, and the eBay Malaysia description is here. Illa shows off the cast last February. Sunday October 8, 2006 [...]
Wired Magazine
Last reminder: The Bates College Museum of Art’s exhibition "Cryptozoology: Out of Time Place Scale" ends with a closing reception (4-6 pm) at the Lewiston, Maine site, on Saturday, October 7, 2006. This is a page from the October 2006 issue of Wired Magazine, which you can enlarge by clicking on the image.
Where is Cassie?
I look forward to seeing folks at the closing reception at Bates’s exhibition “Cryptozoology: Out of Time Place Scale,” on October 7th. In the meantime, I will be pondering why it has been so many years since anyone has seen Cassie, the Casco Bay Sea Serpent. Cassie, the local name I coined long ago in a magazine to characterize these cryptids seen near Portland, Maine, was bestowed in the same tradition that many freshwater and marine creature monikers are given – with passion, humor, and a nod to Nessie. As it turns out, of course, Portland is not alone in [...]
Rarer Than Thylacines
Only 30 exist in Maine and they won’t become visible for sightings until October 7, 2006. Overall, only 200 are known to be around, and some of those already have vanished into private hands. They are almost extinct, although just discovered, and the entire group will disappear soon, mostly into private collections. What in the world could I be talking about? Would you believe one of the rarest of rare books to be published on cryptozoology, the volume that contains the exhibition catalogue and essays from the Bates College program? If you are interested in having me pick up a [...]
Bigfoot vs Mummy
Will the above “mummy” displace efforts to seriously study the “Johor Bigfoot”? As previously mentioned here, the group the Seekers have decided to sell the oft-photographed Johor Bigfoot footcast (see below). The cast is the one that Joshua Gates, the host of the Sci-Fi Channel’s Destination: Truth, and his producer Neil Mandt were filming in Johor, last February. Their reality program does not seem to be on the fall schedule, however. Syed Abdullah (left) and Dr. Kenny Fong with the Singapore-based group, SPI, are shown above with the cast. The importance of this cast to the Seekers has waded. That [...]
Cryptozoologists Will Always Have Paris
Dr. Marie-Jeanne Koffmann During a forthcoming conference in Paris on October 14, 2006, cryptozoologists and hominologists will meet and discuss items of cryptozoological interest. (The French language overview of the meeting can be found below the Richard Klyver illustration of the Almas.) At the gathering, zoologist François de Sarre will discuss unknown hairy hominoids. Michel Meurger, who wrote a book about his sociological thoughts on lake monsters, will also be speaking on other matters. Michel Raynal, Jean Roche, and Jean-Luc Rivera, all well-known French cryptozoologists, shall be attending apparently, as well. Dr. Marie-Jeanne Koffmann, one of the world’s top researchers [...]
