During the first weekend in July 2006, various published photographs from the Florida site of NASA’s probable Space Shuttle launch showed rather large birds near the location. One of these pictures (see below) was so dramatic that Matt Drudge commented about it on his Sunday night radio program. He remarked that he was being emailed so many questions about it he removed the pix from his Drudge Report website for a time. (Drudge definitely is aware of cryptozoology and infrequently posts news items about sightings of cryptids.) However, from further photographs published by Drudge (below) and elsewhere, it is obvious [...]
Animal X Goes Euro
Remember Animal X (not to be confused with the BBC’s X-Creatures and their badly made up red Patterson-Gimlin footage “lookalike”)? The series included a visit with your Cryptomundo host at my museum to tape parts of the “Winged Creatures” and other cryptid segments. WorldScreen is announcing on June 26, 2006, that TV2 Norway, Plante in France, and Ceska, Spektrum and Cyfra+ in Eastern Europe have all acquired the ten part cryptozoology series, Animal X: The Natural Mystery Unit. They report that "originally commissioned by Animal Planet in the U.S., the $2.5 million series from Australia’s Storyteller Media Group concerns a [...]
Flashback: Houston Bat Man
Fifty-three years ago on this date in 1953, a mysterious encounter occurred at 118 East Third Street, Houston, Texas. The sighting will forever be characterized as the “Houston Bat Man.” Is it more bat or man? Even thoughts of Mothman flitter about, as the thing was first compared with a moth. The story has been mixed up in the lore of “winged weirdies” and, probably inappropriately, within the David Grabias 2002 documentary, In Search of the Mothman. * * * According to witness testimony, at 2:30 a.m. on June 18, 1953, Mrs. Hilda Walker, Judy Meyers and Howard Phillips were [...]
Bates Opens Cryptozoology Exhibition
The International Cryptozoology Museum (ICM) is sharing its contents through the end of 2006. Over 100 of some of the most significant large and small items from the ICM’s collection are included in my specific room at the new Bates College exhibition, “Cryptozoology: Out of Time Place Scale.” Then, in October, the objects from that gathering and the other artists’ collections move to Kansas City. The entire traveling exhibition will be there through January 2007. Some of the items from the International Cryptozoology Museum’s collection, contained in my installation at Bates, probably will include: – 8 ft-tall, 500 pound “Crookston [...]
Will Mothman Deaths Return?
According to a listing of TV Movies for June 11 – 17, 2006, a sinister banshee is on the horizon. The Mothman flies again: The Mothman Prophecies ’02. Richard Gere. A reporter investigates the sightings of a strange creature and other strange phenomena in a small town. (PG-13) (2:30) TNT: Jun 17, 2006, Sat. 2 P.M., 11:15 P.M. (CC) Who will die of the Mothman Death Curse in the coming days? June 20th is the fourth anniversary of the date when Mothman investigator Jim Keith’s former partner Sherry Marie Yearsley’s body was dumped along eastbound I-80 at Sparks, Nevada, near [...]
Mothman Pizza
Now there’s something to eat in honor of John A. Keel. The Charleston Daily Mail is running a story on May 30, 2006, about Point Pleasant’s Village Pizza Inn making the “scariest pizza you’ve ever seen.” Apparently, it is a local secret as the specialty doesn’t actually appear on the printed menu — but it is made on request. Dubbed the “Mothman Pizza,” this round 19-inch pie features the winged, crimson-eyed creature atop its crisp, crunchy dough. Here’s what Mr. Mothman looks like in edible pizza form: His eyes are two round red cherry peppers with tiny green olives as [...]
New Mothman Documentary
Why is this man smiling? Should this man be smiling? What movie were these two below in? If you read the first man’s column today in the Charleston Daily Mail you’d probably discover that the second man might not be smiling because guy number one, Dave Peyton, miswrote the name of the movie based on John A. Keel’s book as The Mothman Chronicles. Of course, Keel’s book is The Mothman Prophecies and so is the Richard Gere and Laura Linney movie. (Nice shirt Ms. Linney has on. I’m lucky enough to have it for my museum, and that does make [...]
Bigfoot, Not Bigfeet!
Please avoid letting me hear “Sasquatches” too! No, no, no “Bigfeet” allowed in here. Some nouns, particularly the names of animals and fish, have the same form in singular and plural. Historically and grammatically correct is the word “Bigfoot” for singular and plural, just as “sheep” means one sheep and two or more sheep. There are a number of animals that have the same singular and plural form, for example: antelope – antelope buffalo – buffalo bison – bison mink – mink otter – otter bass – bass deer – deer moose – moose swine – swine pike – pike [...]
Duel Masters™ Announces Creature Photo Contest Winners
April 17, 2006 (Renton, Wash.) – The long-time, menacing legend of Point Pleasant, West Virginia’s Mothman continues to pique the interest of cryptozoologists around the world. Finally, the elusive beast has been “captured.” Thirteen-year-old cryptozoologist-in-training Erik Starn of Wayne, Pennsylvania, captured the creature of local lore in a photograph. Starn’s photo has been awarded the $5,000 first prize in the Duel Masters Photo Contest sponsored by Wizards of the Coast, Inc., a subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE: HAS). Wizards of the Coast introduced the Duel Masters Photo Contest during last October’s “Creature Appreciation Week” celebration. Running through early 2006, the [...]
Thunderbird Spotting
In response to my recent Cryptomundo posting about unusual birds showing up in North Dakota, cryptozoologist Matt Bille, author of Rumors of Existence …and his forthcoming Spring 2006 sequel, Shadows of Existence, comments (remarks reproduced with permission) thusly: When the topic of birds comes up, I always puzzle over the contrast between the amazing ability of birders to spot – and report – small accidentals and their apparent inability to spot Thunderbirds the size of Piper Cubs. With all respect to those who have done work in this field (Coleman, Hall, etc.) I remain convinced this is strong evidence no [...]
