Last Seen in 1990, Parrot Found

Night Parrot, Pezoporus occidentalis by William T Cooper from Australian Parrots. Breaking news for Monday, February 19, 2007, out of Queensland, Australia, acknowledges that a parrot thought extinct has been found. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service says the discovery of a rare bird in outback Queensland will probably attract worldwide scientific interest. Rangers found a dead night parrot – one of Australia’s rarest birds – in the Diamantina National Park in the state’s far south-west late last year. The last reported sighting was 1990. The team of Walter Boles (Australian Museum ornithologist), Max Thompson (visiting US ornithologist), and Wayne [...]

Civil War Dinos

Finally, photographic proof positive of Civil War soldiers with a Triceratops? Today on the Worth1000 photoshopping contest: photos of impossible things that appear to have been taken a long, long time ago. Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing For the link, go here. Now, within our CryptoZoo world here at Cryptomundo, similar photographs have turned up, some showing photoshopping and some not. Take for instance, what are we to make of the above picture of soldiers wearing Civil War (or War Between the States) uniforms while an apparent pterodactyl is at their feet? Verdict: photoshopping. Meanwhile, the following photo is not done [...]

Ancient Chimps or Tano Giants?

Harry Trumbore’s sketch of the reportedly local hairy hominoid of Africa’s Gold Coast, the Tano Giant, which was seen using a cow skin as a cape to keep itself warm. Breaking news from an international research team, led by archaeologist Julio Mercader of the University of Calgary, Canada, announces that chimpanzees may have been using stone “hammers” as long as 4,300 years ago, in the West African country, the Ivory Coast. What if the owner of the tools too large for human hands was the Tano Giant, a huge unknown hominid known from the country today called Ghana, with the [...]

New Parrot Species A Fake?

The Australian government’s drawing of the extremely rare Coxen’s Fig-parrot (Cyclopsitta diophthalma coxeni). The photograph of the “new” species of fig-parrot is unavailable, but the bird would resemble this species. The Australian newspaper for (tomorrow) Tuesday, February 13, 2007, is reporting the Australian government is withdrawing support for the “reported discovery” of a new species, the so-called blue-browed fig-parrot reported to live in the rainforests of southern Queensland. In November, 2006, John Young, his company, John Young Wildlife Enterprises, and Queensland Environment Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr announced the discovery of the new species, based on a photograph. The bird shown closely [...]

Mystery Moa Photo

A Moa? Please note the darker front part of the body is in shadow and the rear portion – with apparent feathers visible – is to the right, in sunlight. Is the above a photograph of a living Moa? I interviewed the credible eyewitness and photographer, a former member of the British Army’s elite Special Air Service (SAS). Here’s the backstory. In 1958, cryptozoologist Bernard Heuvelmans entitled a chapter of his On the Track of Unknown Animals, “The Moa, a Fossil That May Still Thrive.” Moas, both medium-sized and giant forms, have been reported periodically in New Zealand since their [...]

Euro Stego

One of the first dinosaur names that all dino-crazy kids (myself included) learns to pronounce and links to pictures of that tiny-headed, plates-on-the-back image is the “Stegosaurus.” This is the kind of chart presently found on Strategic Transitions learning software that will soon have to be revised. Ask any kid interested in dinosaurs: Where are Stegosaurus found? The answer always has been: The American West, of course. That response is no longer true. News services from China to the USA are flashing the new discovery of a Stegosaurus in Portugal. This recent finding of the first Stegosaurus fossil in Europe [...]
