Send A Cryptozoologist, Not A Travel Writer

Why don’t travel companies send cryptozoology authors and bloggers in pursuit of cryptids and accomodations at Loch Ness, among the Himalayas, in the Cameroons, along the Amazon, or near the veldt of South Africa, instead of travel writers? It totally amazes me that travel promotion organizations get it so wrong, so often. Case in point, there was a remarkably good initial idea from some thoughtful people at Visit Britain and Visit Scotland with the new movie The Water Horse coming out: Send some travel writers to Scotland. An example from yesterday is what they got from the computer of Sarah [...]

The Water Horse Land Sightings at Loch Ness

The Water Horse Land Sightings at Loch Ness On this section of the autoway around Loch Ness, an eyewitness once saw an unknown creature cross the road. The dirty little secret that drives two groups – the closed minded debunkers and the plesiosaur true believers – totally mad is the file on land sightings of cryptids at Loch Ness. Some researchers would just as soon completely ignore them versus looking at what the encounters mean if they are evidence of cryptids unknown in and out of the Scottish lake. The usual reaction has been one in which ridicule is used [...]

On The Track of The Gbahali

Cryptomundo Exclusive I am an American working in Liberia, West Africa with an international relief and development organization. I have always had a bit of an interest in cryptozoology, and enjoy your website. Liberia is covered in dense rainforest and has a low population density. Because of its long civil war (now over), it has been almost totally neglected by biologists and other scientists. In my work in northwestern Liberia I have been hearing reports about several animals which may be of interest to you. Most notable is a large amphibious reptile known as the “gbahali”. It is described as [...]

Clemson Panther Alerts

In an era of university shootings, campuswide notices from college law enforcement that there is a danger on the grounds of the university are taken a lot more seriously than they use to be. On Sunday, December 16, 2007, such warnings went out across the campus of Clemson University in South Carolina, not about a rampage shooter, but regarding the sightings of a cryptid cat, a panther. One Cryptomundo reader forwarded the following note and two campus alerts: I work at Clemson University in upstate South Carolina. We receive news alert broadcasts from time to time, through email from campus [...]

Maine Mountain Lion Study Group

A group of Dexter Regional High School students and their teacher-adviser Regan McPhetres plan to investigate and prove the existence of mountain lions in Maine. McPhetres, who along with another teacher ran a similar program from 1992 through 2001 in the Winslow-Waterville area, believes there is plenty of evidence that the elusive creatures have a presence in Maine. “There’s evidence they exist around us,” McPhetres said Sunday, despite the reluctance of some state officials to embrace the findings. He said confirmed sightings have been reported in Vermont, New Hampshire and New Brunswick. Mountain lions are supposed to be extinct east [...]

Croft’s New Glyptodont

The extinct armored mammals known as “glyptodonts” are an intriguing group of giant armadillos. They are found as replicas easily from Schleich (above) labeled simply as Glyptodon, and from Safari (below), as Doedicurus. Bernard Heuvelmans writes in On the Track of Unknown Animals of the discoveries of glyptodont carapaces being used as shelters or for tombs of Pleistocene humans in South America. He notes that great controversy surrounds whether such demonstrates that the humans were there earlier than expected, or the glyptodonts survived later than they were thought to be extinct. The obvious notion that the humans of 15,000 years [...]

MonsterQuest: Mystery Cats

The program took on mangy dogs last week, so tonight it is about the phantom felines. Will the Mystery Cats be more exciting than the Mystery Canids? Will the words Panthera atrox come from the lips of anyone on this program? Will the black dead felid carcass turn out to be only a domestic cat’s, thus mirroring last week’s program? Will the viewers begin to figure out that one reason there are so many animal mysteries in Minnesota is because that’s where the film production company is located? It’s time for another “MonsterQuest.” Lions in the Suburbs – Attacks by [...]
