Serval Caught in Atlanta

The mystery felid was identified as various kinds of cats before it was finally officially verified to be a Leptailurus serval. The African wildcat was caught near Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia, early Thursday, July 10, 2008. It is now on lock down and its owner could face misdemeanor criminal charges for bringing the illegal pet into the state. Update: A Boston man faced charges of reckless endangerment for allegedly making up a story about a shark sighting off Martha’s Vineyard on Thursday, July 10, 2008, police said. Michael Lopenzo, 60, is charged with telling people that he saw two 22-foot long sharks that weighed about 3,000 pounds each near State Beach, Edgartown Police Chief Paul Condlin said. Jaws Now Off Martha’s Vineyard & In Aussie Lake

The Associated Press is reporting that the island where Jaws was filmed got a real-life shark scare when two beaches were closed on Thursday, July 10, 2008, due to an unconfirmed sighting of a great white shark nearby. A spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation said state-run South Beach was closed for a time Thursday after the Coast Guard received reports of the shark sighting. Cryptids’ Vet?

Variety is reporting on July 10, 2008 that Columbia Pictures has acquired a new motion picture property, Mythological Veterinarian. It is a comic pitch that will be written by Andrew Kurtzman and produced by Jimmy Miller. Principal Entertainment’s Danny Sherman will be executive producer. Andrew Kurtzman has been a writer on Down Periscope (1996), Camp Nowhere (1994), See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989), and 57 episodes (1982-1985) of “Saturday Night Live.” Variety says the project is about a modern-day veterinarian who’s recruited by a secret society that watches over the world’s mythological creatures.
