In December 1985, at the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids, Michigan, pregnant zookeeper Gayle Booth, 30, was fatally mauled by the above jaguar. Wild animals are dangerous, inside zoos and outside. The mystery surrounding how the San Francisco Zoo’s tiger (below) escaped from the grotto may be slowly becoming solved. Human intervention could have been part of the cause. San Francisco police are investigating the possibility that one of the victims in the fatal tiger mauling on Christmas Day climbed over a waist-high fence and then dangled a leg or other body part over the edge of a moat [...]
Do Critics Like The Water Horse?
What are the critics saying about the new cryptofiction film about the Loch Ness Monster? Here are some snippets from a few reviews of The Water Horse. (Click on the hyperlinks to read the complete reviews.) It is really difficult to tell if the reviewers are enjoying the movie. For most of us here, we’ll go see it anyway, but I thought some of these make for intriguing reading. Charles Cassady Jr. seems the most cryptid-aware, so I’ll begin with some quotations from his critique: Film earns bonus cryptozoology points for also mentioning Loch Morar, a deep Scottish lake with [...]
Beckjord Resurfaces
Scott Marlowe Erik Beckjord Scott Marlowe of the Pangea Institute in Florida is circulating the following document, and is giving permission to reprint it here. It is carried here for information dissemination purposes. The contents of the following document are entirely the remarks of Scott Marlowe, and do not, necessarily, reflect the opinion of Cryptomundo or any associated works or organizations of Loren Coleman and others linked to Cryptomundo. As Mr. Marlowe notes, this is to be shared widely, and Cryptomundo is thus publishing this, without commentary and unedited (even for misspellings). Our caution about past associations with certain individuals [...]
Tiger Escapes SF Zoo, Kills One
Tatiana, San Francisco Zoo’s Siberian tiger, attacked three men, killing one. Infrequently, discussions occur here about escaped animals, mostly as alleged explanations for cryptid animals. When a situation such as the following does occur, the fact is that the animal is quickly caught, returned to captivity, or killed. This is a sudden, sad, and startling story for Christmas Day. San Francisco, California – Police say a tiger escaped from its cage at the San Francisco Zoo today, killing one visitor and injuring two others. Several police officers shot the tiger to death when it started moving toward a group of [...]
Bring Forth The Track Cast of Nessie!
A few years ago, the cry across the land was to have the head of a Sea-Serpent brought to Science. I place the same kind of call out there regarding the alleged track cast of the footprint of the Loch Ness Monster collected in December 1933, some 74 years ago. Of course, we all take it to heart that the footprints found on the shores of Loch Ness were fakes made by Marmaduke Wetherell. But within cryptozoology, we must be skeptical in all directions. How many times have I heard about a “hoax” claim, especially with tracks, which has as [...]

Prehistoric Christmas Present
Two amateur fossil hunters from the outback town of Andamooka in the far north of South Australia say they have been given the Christmas present “from hell.” A few years ago Tom and Sharon Hurley found the fossil remains of a prehistoric fish, resembling a swordfish with teeth, near Boulia in Queensland. The fish is a previously unknown genus and species, and has now been officially named the Australo-pachy cormus hurleyi. Tom Hurley says it’s both an honor and a curse to have the fish carry the name Hurley. “Well basically I got the Christmas present from Hell. Immortality. The [...]
Happy Wildfolk Yule!
Merry Wildfolk Yuletime! Santa Claus is nothing more than a modernized image of the Wildpeople, Bigfoot, Windigo, Sasquatch, and Yeti. Enjoy the origins as an insight into hominology. Remember, the wilder the look of that woodsy-looking Old St. Nick on your tree or mantle, the closer you are to the reality of Santa Sasquatch. The Swedish Wildmen/folk (Snömannen), Yeti-like creatures believed to inhabit the remote areas of the forest of Lapland, is linked to that of a Bigfoot painted bright red with a snowy white beard. Old stories of the Wildpeople and Snowmen (Snömannen) are interwoven into those of Santa [...]
Pick “Bigfoot” For Seven Fortean Wonders, Round 3
Congratulations! Voters from Cryptomundo appear to have had an impact on the Round 2 polling for “The Seven Fortean Wonders of the World.” The final results for Round 2 are in, and of 151 votes, fully 35% (53 votes) were for “Bigfoot / Yeti.” After the choice of the location of Loch Ness was lost in Round 1, due to neglect on the part of our community, I felt it important for our voices to be heard by voting for the only cryptozoology choice left: “Bigfoot / Yeti.” I put out the call and you responded. Thank you! You did [...]
Send A Cryptozoologist, Not A Travel Writer
Why don’t travel companies send cryptozoology authors and bloggers in pursuit of cryptids and accomodations at Loch Ness, among the Himalayas, in the Cameroons, along the Amazon, or near the veldt of South Africa, instead of travel writers? It totally amazes me that travel promotion organizations get it so wrong, so often. Case in point, there was a remarkably good initial idea from some thoughtful people at Visit Britain and Visit Scotland with the new movie The Water Horse coming out: Send some travel writers to Scotland. An example from yesterday is what they got from the computer of Sarah [...]
