Cryptotourism has been in play for ages, especially highlighted by such sites as Loch Ness, which boasts of Nessie. Smaller examples of monsters and places, such as the Lizard Man of South Carolina or Tessie of Lake Tahoe, dot the maps of the world. But a new trend is the recognition of cryptids, history, and places in various locations, often further overlooked. Glacier Island’s monster is one case that even turned up in the old Books of Charles Fort. In Mr. X’s Hypertext of the works of Charles Fort, he notes the passage from Lo!: It may be that there [...]
Tarzan Creator’s Grandson Dies
Tarzan of the Apes, the first book cover, 1914. In Mark Evanier’s blog, News From Me, he writes that Danton Burroughs, the grandson of Edgar Rice Burroughs and “a major force in keeping that man’s work alive,” died Wednesday evening, April 30, 2008, at his home in Tarzana, California. The suburb, of course, was named for his grandfather’s legendary creation. Danton Burroughs was 64. He was the son of John Coleman Burroughs, who was himself distinguished in the arts as a photographer and illustrator. Burroughs had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease, but the immediate cause of death was said to [...]
California’s Latest Black Cougar
Continuing a definite trend here in cryptozoological news of late, this is a breaking May 3, 2008, story from the early edition of The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa, California, about a “black cougar” seen by a Forestville, California man: If there really is a black cougar prowling Don Callen’s woodlands near Forestville, it’s a bona fide feline phenomenon. Such a creature may exist, experts say, but there has never been a documented sighting of a black cougar, also known as a mountain lion or puma. And the furry shape in the two photographs captured 50 feet from Callen’s stationary [...]
Latest Fake Bigfoot Video?
This is suppose to be a new – specifically taken on April 19, 2008 – video of a “Bigfoot sighting in a remote region of Transylvania County, North Carolina.” Instead, what I see is another video that is so faked, from the human in the suit to the less-than-clear wording describing it, I am shocked it is called a “Bigfoot sighting” vs what it is – a dramatic production staged for the camera. Bubba Cromer, who sent this to me, has produced a film that is good movie, which is a delightful comedy milestone in cryptofiction, but why are these [...]
Spanish Black Panthers Terrorize Pigs
One of the mauled Pato Negra pigs, with an insert of a black panther. The Olive Press in Andalucia, Spain, has published the latest on a roaming pair of large melanistic cryptid felids. Needless to say, big cats are not suppose to exist in modern-day Spain. The La Cala cougar is clearly not scared of travelling for a meal. The celebrated wild cat that was first spotted in La Cala a year ago has apparently turned up in Campillos. As reported by the Olive Press, he has been SLOWLY moving inland, and now the “panther-like” feline has been accused of [...]
Maned Mystery Lion in Quebec? Updated
Actually, not exactly. But a male African lion is believed to be roaming the area near Maniwaki, western Quebec, reportedly since Tuesday night, April 29, 2008, after escaping from its owner. Cpl. Gordon McGregor of the Kitigan Zibi reserve police force confirmed that they are looking for the lion, which belongs to a local resident named Stanley Dumas-Whiteduck. The reserve is near Maniwaki, a town about 145 kilometres north of Ottawa. The Quebec provincial police have said they are also looking for the lion, according to a CBC News report. If anyone starts hearing reports of cryptid maned mystery cats [...]
Parasitic Plant Rediscovered After 20 Years
A plant only its mother and father could love? It looks beautiful to me. This is a cryptobotany triumph. This rediscovered parasitic plant was found June 12, 2006, in Guerrero, Mexico, and not seen since 1985. Photograph by George Yatskievych. A scientist with the Missouri Botanical Garden has rediscovered and identified a rare parasitic plant that hasn’t been seen by botanists in more than 20 years. A single specimen of the plant was found in Mexico in 1985, but the plant wasn’t seen again until St. Louis botanist George Yatskievych and a colleague found it in a pine oak forest [...]
Snow Leopard in Kentucky?
This alligator was captured and killed in Texas, although the photo is part of an e-mail circulating a rumor that an alligator is living in Rough River Lake, Kentucky. Courtesy of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Reports of exotic animals in Kentucky are sometimes rumors and sometimes the truth. While the giant alligator report in the Kentucky lake was false, three years ago in Bullitt County, Kentucky, a Himalayan snow leopard, one of the most endangered species on Earth, was captured near KY 44. Other animals captured (not just sighted) in Kentucky, include: Mountain lion, Mercer County, single occurrence. Caimans [...]
112 Years Later: Dwarf Cloud Rat Rediscovered
A team of Filipino and American scientists have rediscovered a highly distinctive mammal — a greater dwarf cloud rat — that was last seen 112 years ago. Furthermore, it has never before been discovered in its natural habitat and was thought by some to be extinct. The greater dwarf cloud rat (Carpomys melanurus) has dense, soft reddish-brown fur, a black mask around large dark eyes, small rounded ears, a broad and blunt snout, and a long tail covered with dark hair. An adult weighs about 185 grams. “This beautiful little animal was seen by biologists only once previously — by [...]
