Chicago River Gator

On June 20, 2008, the alligator above was caught in a branch of the Chicago River, Illinois; it measured 4½ feet long and about 45 pounds. The alligator was found in the Bubbly Creek, in a woodsy area near 37th Street and Racine Avenue, which at one time was one of the dirtiest parts of the river. It just stayed submerged with its eyes popping out like in the documentaries. It was in stealth mode, I think.Bill Cox, director of human resources for Midland Metal Products Cox was among about a dozen Midland employees who spotted the female alligator swimming [...]

Radioactive Wisent?

The goverment of Ukraine intends to introduce a threatened species, the European bison or wisent (Bison bonasus), into the exclusion zone around the stricken Chernobyl nuclear reactor. The plan is to create a nature reserve where the bison can thrive in the absence of humans. The minister in charge of Chernobyl, Volodomir Shandra, says there are clean areas within the 30-kilometre radius where the pilot scheme could work. The wisent is the heaviest surviving land animal in Europe, a relic of the Pleistocene megafauna of Eurasia. A forest dwelling species, wisent were first scientifically described by Carolus Linnaeus in 1758. [...]

Rash of Zoo Deaths

Petal. Animals usually live longer in zoos, of course, than they do in the wild. Needless to say, zoos regularly experience animal deaths. The Sheriff decided to carry the photo of the Saltville gator to show folks, because no one believed him. More “crazy crocs” have made their way into mini-media mentions. The “crocs” is shorthand for “crocodilians,” of course, and thus includes alligators, crocodiles, gharials, caimans, and kin. Woman Killed By Quebec Animal

The apparent mystery animal attacks continue. Or, at least, that’s the way early media reports would have you thinking. In this case, the offending animal remains at large, and thus far, the cause of the death is only based on a nearby sighting of a bear. Something seems a little off about this in the land of the Windigo. The Globe and Mail, late on June 1, 2008, reported that a “Bear kills woman in Quebec”, thusly: Quebec conservation officers are on the hunt for a bear that killed a 70-year-old woman. Provincial police say the victim’s husband went looking [...]
