Corry, PA, Sept. 20. – (AP) – Fears of a “furry thing resembling an ape” subsided today in this Erie county community after a posse of farmers failed to locate the mysterious animal in a 48-hour search. The “thing” popped up Sunday [September 18] at the edge of a woods three miles south of Corry and sent Rose Marie Clabbatz, 13, and two smaller children of Howard Clabbatz, scurrying across the fields to their father. Clabbatz listened to their breathless story about an animal that “started chasing us” and organized a hunting party of 50 persons, many with guns. Yesterday [...]
Halloween Premiere: Monsterquest
During the year, the crew from this show came to Maine, Texas, and a lot of other places across North America. Don’t be surprised if you see some familiar faces in this series, including people you know in the first mini-documentary ever about an all-women Bigfoot expedition. Monsterquest, which debuts this fall, will take a scientific look at “creature” sightings around the world. History announced its 13-episode order for Monsterquest. There will be episodes on “monsters” such as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, Swamp Beast and the Creature of Snellgrove Lake. The series — described as one part history, one [...]
Sasquatch Meets the Marshmallows
As Cryptomundo readers know, there is an increase at this time of year in the newspapers and on the local broadcasts of “spooky” news items. On television cable, this translates into more features on weird subjects. Cryptozoology gets thrown into this Halloween mix, perhaps unfortunately. Bigfoot walks across your television screen, again and again. Sasquatch meets the marshmallows, it seems. This year, with the 40th anniversary of the Patterson-Gimlin footage, the Halloween Bigfoot/Sasquatch effect has been more than usual. Several nights have been devoted to wall-to-wall replays of old Bigfoot specials and programs. Many of us are very familiar with [...]
Men of Cryptozoology: Scott Norman
Mokele-mbembe art courtesy of Bill Rebsamen. Click on image for a larger view. Scott T. Norman recently journeyed from California to the East Coast of the USA. He attended the Mass Monster Mash on October 13, and on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Patterson-Gimlin Film, happened to visit me, along with five members of his family, at the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine. Scott is a cryptozoologist who has taken his passion for dinosaurs, Mokele-mbembe, and prehistoric cryptids, all the way to Africa. He definitely ranks as one of the Men of Cryptozoology. Let’s meet him [...]
Kiwi’s Taniwha
On Tuesday, October 16, I agreed to be on one of the many radio shows I do around Halloween every year. For whatever reason, mainstream and alternative radio both enjoy cryptozoology more around October 31. I suppose the annual holiday allows them the freedom to talk about monsters, creatures, and cryptids without looking over their shoulders at their programmers and sponsors. Anyway, frequently I don’t know much about a show I agree to go onto, there are so many these days. With the internet shows, well, it can get overwhelming. But certainly, if Australia calls up and asks if I’ll [...]
At Mass Monster Mash
I’m on the road again. This time I am at the “Mass Monster Mash,” in Watertown, Massachusetts, on Saturday, October 13, 2007, giving an illustrated (almost 50 images) on the Dover Demon. I also will be talking to folks, and selling/signing books. Since others there are speaking on Bigfoot, the Bridgewater Triangle, and Phantom Clowns, I’ll have some things to say about those topics too, outside my keynote hourlong illustrated lecture. I will have a few new copies of the 2007 edition of Mysterious America with me. I also will bring along some copies of The Copycat Effect, Tom Slick: [...]
Richard Corben’s Comic Cryptids
There has to be an esteemed place in the cryptocosmos for this well-known comic artist. A Midwestern guy like me, Richard Corben was born October 1, 1940, on a farm in Anderson, Missouri. Today he is seen as an American comic book artist best known for his illustrated fantasy stories in Heavy Metal magazine, to some, or for the traditions coming down via his first graphic novel, Bloodstar, to others. For me, it is his work in cryptozoological themes that intrigue me. After all, in 2004, he drew “me,” sort of, as the comic book character “Coleman Wadsworth” chasing an [...]
Small Pterodactyls Among The Indians
You would think the recent baseball game between the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians had a chapter in it snatched straight from a cryptozoological book. During the game, insects bothered, to no end, the infielders and pitcher Joba Chamberlain for the Yankees, but less so, it seems the Indians. The bugs remain cryptid. The reaction to them, however, has been remarkable. Big bad Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens was so horrified by the insect invasion he told the media Saturday at Yankee Stadium: “I would have probably pulled us off the field.” The insects were filmed, could have been [...]
International Cryptozoology Museum
Here is a peek inside the International Cryptozoology Museum, thanks to the Sun Journal’s photographer Amber Waterman. The following are the images (except the final three Bigfoot photographs) that accompany the Lewiston Sun Journal front page article about the International Cryptozoology Museum, with their captions and audio clips. At the end, you will find my clarifications and artists’ credits. ====== Loren Coleman talks about the International Cryptozoology Museum located in his Portland home. To the far right is a [resin] cast of the Patterson film Bigfoot, and on the wall is the coelacanth, a fish that was presumed extinct until [...]
A Man and His (Weird) Museum
The Lewiston Sun Journal came for a visit to my museum. Here’s the way reporter Kathryn Skelton experienced it. And me. Weird, Wicked Weird A man and his (weird) museum Hair from Sir Edmund Hillary’s Yeti expedition, water from Loch Ness, a 9-foot latex pterodactyl, Loren Coleman’s got it all. Sometime next spring, Loren Coleman’s getting a 12-foot-long replica of Canada’s Ogopogo lake monster. It’ll probably have to stay on the porch, near his 8.5-foot-tall, oxen-haired Bigfoot. Coleman is a little pressed for space indoors. There’s already a 9-foot latex pterodactyl camouflaged by an avocado tree and a cabinet of [...]
